My guy and I have been together for a year and a half. At Christmas he gave me a beautiful diamond ring to sort of serve as a promise/engagement ring, but wants to upgrade before he gets down and pops the big one. Right now I have a .3ish marquis set in a yellow gold setting that has small round sidestones in the band. II would like for us to be able to try for something closer to .5 or above. I really like princess and cushion cut stones or something similar. Our budget will probably be around 2-3 thousand, as we are just starting out and are rather young and we have a house to pay for lol. My main thing right now is to find a setting I like. I don''t want to have to lose quality of stone for the sake of a stetting, but I want something that is going to be beautiful. The stone will come later and I pretty much know what I want there, I think. But setting ideas would be wonderful.

What kind of styles do you like? Antique, modern, simple, three-stone, solitaire...? White gold, yellow gold, or platinum?
Is the 2-3k for the setting and the stone? Are you planning to keep your current stone/ring and buy something else entirely, or this is a trade-in upgrade thing?

So many questions!!

well.....what kind of settings do you like?

do you still want to have small sidestones on the setting band? or would you rather have a sleek solitaire? do you like pave or channel set stones, or do you prefer prong set?

one more question...

have you gone to B&M stores to try some on? that is really the best thing to do, even if you think you know what you like!

let us know!

Well I kindof want something simple. Either a solitaire or maybe something with small side stones like what this has. I''ll be keeping the ring I have to wear on my right hand in the end. The 2-3 is for both yes, though that may end up changing, I dunno. I like Yellow gold, it is what most of my jewelry is in and it is flattering to my hands and wrists really. I like the idea of having something unique, but I don''t want to take away from my center stone because I''m going to find a stone that I adore and I want that to be what everyone sees.

have you tried looking at blue nile or whiteflash? they have lovely (standard) solitaire settings from $195. if you decide you do want something with sidestones, but dont want it to take away from the center stone, maybe you could have baguettes set sideways (as they don't really sparkle all that much, but add to the design) if you like that look. on those same sites (especially blue nile) you could probably find a setting with sidestones for around $500-750...which would take away significantly from your diamond budget.

p.s. come over and join the LIW if you haven't already!

Let''s see...

You could either go with a simple solitaire setting from someplace like Blue Nile (like this one), paired with a stone like this, or you could go designer, and get the Vatche X-Prong with a stone like this. I''m not endorsing the second jeweler, that was just the only picture of yellow gold that I found.

Either one is a good option. Both of the WF stones are fully upgradeable, so if you decide you want something bigger in the future you can trade in. A setting like the BN one saves a bit of money, but I think the Vatche has a really cool style. If you do a search on here, you can find lots of pictures of that ring on people''s hands.

You can work with that budget! Especially if you are looking for a simple setting. I got an antique style white gold engagement ring setting with a couple small diamond accents, maybe like .15 / .20cttw for $400.00 and my diamond was $2,500.00 I think. Maybe a little less or a little more? It''s an ideal cut .83ct G SI2 from James Allen. I love it. I really thought I got an awesome size / quality for my budget. Here is a link to the pics:

if you want white gold, go with white gold! you can always switch and use your current ring if you feel like wearing other yellow gold jewelry :)

but don''t worry - there are very few ways to make diamonds look less elegant, and i don''t think that a simple yellow gold setting is one of them!

I''ll probably end up staying with the yellow gold, I prefer it really in the end on me. It goes better with my skin tones to me. I''m looking at a few different settings right now and sharing them with my guy to see what he thinks. In the meantime to satiate my great desire to have completion (because when i want something i have to have it now) i am looking at an inexpensive trellis setting to place a tanzanite or topaz in lol. But Back to the topic. Are there any really unique designs that anyone knows of that aren''t as expensive but that have that really antiquish feel? I''m worried the antiques might not work as well in yellow gold? someone said this...
