hello everyone,

i am a longtime lurker and now have a major problem and i desperately need some advice.

My husband bought my engagement ring from a jeweler who is a family friend of my parents in 2004. At the time of his purchase he received an appraisal for the ring that listed all of the specs of the center diamond (color, clarity, measurements, etc.). We used the appraisal to insure the ring and all has been fine until now.

Our insurance was going through their records and realized that they did not have a copy of the GIA certificate for the diamond. They requested that we send them a copy. it was at that time that we realized that the appraisal, even though it listed all the info, does not have a GIA certicate number on it. We also did not receive a separate GIA certificate.

i called the jeweler and asked for the Gia certificate or the number so i could give it to the insurance. they can not find it and do not have the gia cert. number in their files. They are going to their diamond supplier in NYC to see if he has a record of the certificate number. I am waiting for him to call them back.

I, in the meantime, am FREAKING out!

What can i do if the supplier can not find the number? Is it possible to find the gia certifacte number some other way? Can i have it re-certified by GIA? (i live in NYC....) how much does that cost?

Does the diamond have to be out of the setting to do that? Where can i have it removed and reset? will my platinum setting and prings be alright if i remove and then reset the stone?

Should I try to get a refund and return the diamond?

My husband paid a very good amount for this ring (it is a 2 carat radiant) based on the fact that it was GIA certified. now that it can not be proven that it is I am feeling very frustated and nervous about the amount of money he paid for it....

is all lost???? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Don''t worry, you don''t need to freak out or return your ring. Worst case scenario, you might end up spending $100 or so.

First, I would start by contacting the jeweler you purchased the ring from. Ask them if the stone had a certificate and if they have the number on their records. If they do, you can contact the grading lab and pay a small fee for a new cert.

However, if they say they don''t have a cert in their records you are going to have to send in your stone to be recerted. I think this costs between $75-150, but I''m not sure of the exact amount. Others here would have a better idea. If this seems too expensive of an option, try calling back the insurance company and ask if they would just accept the information on the appraisal or documented information from an independent appraisal.

The worst case scenario is that the diamond will go back to GIA for re-recognition and a copy of the grading document will be created, for a fee, of course. This assumes that there was a grading document in the first place and that the integrity of the retailer is not now in question. The jeweler should be willing to handle the issues of diamond removal, shipping and resetting, if they lost the original report.
In the scheme of things, this is not something to be too upset about.

If you feel that the lack of a GIA report was an intentional act, then you need to proceed very cautiously. You don''t want to be the one accused of switching a diamond if the other party created the problem.
