Hi everyone - I have been working on re-doing a sapphire ring that I inherited from my mother-in-law who recently passed. She gave me the ring a few years back and at the time, I simply changed it to a similar platinum 3 stone band that was in my size so I could wear it. She had a tiny finger and the original band was worn completely down after 60+ years of her wearing it as a wedding ring. I wanted to update the style a bit and was thinking of changing out the rounds for some pears. I originally thought the stone was around 2.5 carats but the jeweler has told me that it is actually 4.76 carats. I guess CS face up smaller than diamonds which I was not aware of. The sapphire I believe came from Ceylon in the 50’a because that is where my mother-in-law was actually born She lived there until she got married but the stone is a bit on the medium to darker blue side so it might have been bought in England. I wanted to make sure that there is enough sparkle on either side of the ring to make up for some of the darkness in the sapphire so I was thinking of adding 1/3 carat pears on each side. There would also be a thin 3 sided pave band with some milgrain and hand engraving. What I am trying to figure out is if there is enough room for a stone and pears this size? I always get my rings made bigger than my finger size as I like them loose so I will be getting this ring made in a size 8. I don’t have a problem with wearing large rings since my e-ring is a 2 carat round with a 5 point halo and is around 13mm across. Since the pears are wide though, do they sit high enough to not hit the adjacent fingers? I have not seen a ring with pear diamonds in person before. I have also noticed on the few pictures I can find, that sometimes the pears are angled back a bit. I don’t know if this is an aesthetic thing or if it happens to be done if the center stone is too large. Any advice is welcomed. Thanks.
Something like this ring example - are the pears pinned back or do they actually go straight across on the finger? Is there more than one way to do this look?
Hi, I have an oval with pear sides and love the feminine look.
As to your questions, I think place -wise on a size 8 band there shouldn't be an issue.
I guess it's more helpful to get mm -sizes rather than weight. Fancy cuts are less standardized when it comes to face-up size vs ct weight. Coloured stones have different weights compared to diamonds.
So I think you'd need mm rather than carats to visualize.
I think the angle of the side stones depends on what look to go for and how much space there is.
I believe the center stone is about 8-9 mm across. I am checking that with the jeweler. I am not sure exactly how many mm across the pears are for approximately 1/3 carat. Here is a picture.....I would love to see a picture of your 3 stone ring if you have it. I don’t know if the pears are too large for what I am trying to do?
One thing you could do is see if a precision cutter could tweak to the pavilion would improve the light return and help with the darkness. I have had this done with several sapphires and it makes a huge difference. I usually use Dan Stair (Custom Gemstones), but Jerry Newman is highly regarded (http://www.gemartservices.com; [email protected]). While they have the stone, they can also let you know if there are any little chips that need some attention.
i wish I have seen enough examples IRL to know exactly what I prefer. I found a few examples of pears but I have not found a single sapphire oval with pears sides in google images or Pinterest. My gut tells me to angle them slightly since we are dealing with a large stone.....especially since I am going to have a very small pave band. The jeweler was going to do a mock up but I think I am just going to go for it. I will post some picture updates when it is finished.
It is already sitting with Debebians since he has done a lot of custom work for me over the years. They don’t seem to advertise that side of their business as much but the owner has made me some really beautiful pieces at a reasonable cost.
Here’s mine, it’s a 5 carat yellow and about 2 carat blues (they are deep cut). It’s doesnt currently fit on my ring finger but I’m a size 8 and it doesn’t “stick out”.
