I have about $3000 to work with. I am looking for a single round diamond with a simple white gold band. I have been looking at diamonds, but I really feel lost.

Is something like this the way to go? http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.80-carat-k-color-vvs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-349798

or is it better to get a smaller diamond with a better color grade like this? http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.60-carat-f-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-288922

or am I completely offtrack? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Is size important to your gf?

I own a k in that size (85 points) and I specifically went with a k as I knew I would be comfortable with that colorbin that size. I wanted size!

I would not go down to a .6 ct in your price range. I've been shopping with a friend of mine and I've found lots of stones j or higher in the .7ct range. So I wouldn't go lower than that.

The K looks like a nice stone. I like the warm tones in diamonds, and well-cut K color stones are a terrific value. That's a nice sized stone for the price-go for it.

I would suggest staying above J-color, unless you specifically know the recipient is okay with lower colors.

Here are two stones worth considering:

.603ct, F, SI1
http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/0.603-f-si1-round-diamond-ags-bl-104069795003

.707ct, H, VS2 (if you can stretch your budget, this stone is perfect for your needs)
http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/0.707-h-vs2-round-diamond-ags-bl-104069795033

Pair either of those with this $325 simple, elegant setting in white gold:
http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/six-prong-solitaire-14k-white-gold-5351w14

And you're set! With a top-notch cut, in a classic white gold setting.

I really suggest looking at that H-colored stone, as it will be VERY close to budget after Pricescope discount (just ask for it).

Best of luck!

Wow you all are great. Thanks. I am going to a couple of stores tomorrow to check out some in person, and then I will make a decision. I can't thank you enough for the advice.

ask to see GIA or AGS graded stones.

So I went to look at diamonds in person today. Honestly, it was pretty depressing. I am definitely buying online. I do have a couple more questions though.

What things would make this diamond http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/0.704-j-vs1-round-diamond-ags-c-104071853035 $100 cheaper than this diamond http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/0.702-j-vs2-round-diamond-ags-c-104070957116 ?

They look pretty much the same to me. Also what makes the Brain Gavin diamonds better than something like this from James Allen? http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.72-carat-j-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-328346

I am sure you get these questions all the time, but if anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

To your first question . I don't know.

To your second question, Brian Gavin stones are branded h&a stones that command a premium over just ideal cut stones like at James Allen . James Allen has h&a cuts too but I'm talking about that particular one you posted .

So would you be able to see a difference with the naked eye or is it something that you could only tell with magnification?

Depends. That one you posted I wasn't a fan of the arrows could be crisper. BUT in general, h&a is just symmetry. And I'd you find a non h and a with good symmetry, its very hard to tell the difference with the naked eye.

May I ask. Does need the solitiares to be in white metal? Or would she be open to rose gold or yellow gold? I ask because if she would be open to the latter, I think you could easily drop to a k.

No, unfortunately it has to be a white metal. She doesn't wear any gold colored jewelry. Ok posting one more diamond and then I swear I'm done. This cut is Ideal and the symmetry is EX. http://www.ritani.com/diamonds/round-diamond-0-70-Carat-J-color-GIA-certified/D-1PY5VQ So should that one be pretty similar to the Brain Gavin ones to the naked eye? Sorry I'm just trying to figure out if it is worth it to me to pay the extra for Brain Gavin.

Well I can't see a picture so I'm not sire but ex smm is a good start . However I don't love the angles on that stone so I would probably not get that one . Run the numbers though the HCA tool (Google it and Pricescope you'll find it) why are you aiming to spend 2k?

Oh, I'm not. I was just trying to compare diamonds that looked the same to me so that I could understand the differences. If I don't go with Brian Gavin, I'll just get a bigger size.

I decided to go with the ritani diamond with the tulip cathedral ring. Thank you so much for all your help.
