I just ordered a pair of stones be mounted in a set of 3 prong martini settings for diamond stud earings. They are made of 18k white gold.

My wife's ears are sensitive to metals and was wondering if I'd be better off getting her platinum settings instead of white gold.

Then I was wondering if the platinum weight will cause the studs to hang or droop down since she has very small lobes.

If the settings were identical in size, shape, and materials, how much more woud they cost in platinum than white gold (a simple 3 prong martini set)?

ETA: One last question - Screw in backings or slip on? What's the preference and why?

I think you are better off with Pt or at least a WG with Pd or some other less allergenic metal as the alloying metal than Nickel.

From what I heard, screw-backs seems to be more irritating because of the threadings of the screw than slip-ons.

Depends on the jeweler for the pricing. WF settings, WG is $175 compare to Pt''s $325. BN is WG at $240 and Pt''s $380. JA''s will be at WG $325 and Pt $625. So there is a range.

I find this to be true as SC mentioned, I find screw backs difficult and fiddly to use personally but I prefer them for security than slip ons.

I''ve had three pairs of diamond earrings, though none the size that you''re looking at. My first pair had screw backs. I could never get them cleaned well and found them annoying to take on and off. I gave them to my sister last year. My second pair had regular tension backs. I lost those. My long, curly hair was always getting tangled in them. The third pair has locking backs. La Pousette, Protektor - there are a few brands. The earrings back is a flat disk with little bits that stick out. You squeeze the two little bits and it allows the earring post to move freely through the earring backs. There are two grooves in the earring post so when pulled the earring back locks into the earring post groove and it won''t budge.

There is a downside for me, they can be harder to grasp to put on because they are flat disks, not butterfly backs with some depth.

I had to rename so I could attach the file of the backs. I like them best of the choices I''ve tried.

I''m very sensitive to metals also but have never had a problem with any white gold. I would stay away from the screwbacks, they are a pain to take on and off.

I have screw on backs and they are a pain. I never change my ear rings because of them...just too much work
and by the time you get them on you have put your fingers all over your diamonds and sort of have to clean
them while they are in your ears. If I had to do it again I would get those la Pousette backs!
