My husband surprised me with a pair of 1ct diamond studs while we were on vacation in Aruba. He was told that they were SI2, H color. Well, I put them right on and wore them the rest of the vacation. When we got home I took them off and cleaned them. I noticed a black spot on one of the stones, that you can see at least 12inches away. It''s almost the size of a grain of rice. This is bothering me, since I feel my husband was misrepresented. What are your opinions, would the quality grading be correct?? I thought SI quality was visible only under magnification, and I quality was visible with the naked eye?? Any thoughts, I am in the process of contacting the jeweler. THANKS!!!

There are eye clean SI1 and eye clean SI2, just as there are really bad SI1-2. I don''t think they were misrepresented, but if the inclusions bother you then send them back and get a refund, if you can. Good luck.

Kaleigh''s right. some SI2''s are eyeclean others are not. what type of grading is it? it''s known that EGL is a more liberal in their grading than GIA. however, SI doesnt'' guarentee a stone having inclusions that are only seen under magnification.

Great:

Your husband expressed his opinion and value of you with a great gift.

Something to keep in mind on: A kinda beginners defiinintion is that SI can be thought of as "Seen by Eye." Eye clean just means that looking down from the top of the diamond that the flaws are hard to see.

The diamond was probably not misrepresented. Also, I cannot imagine sending them back to a jeweler in Aruba and expecting great service or exchange (or even getting them back - and you would have no recourse).

I would just cherish your husbands gift, and know that he did the best he knew how to do. That is all any of us can ask of another.

If you really feel that the defect cannot be lived with. Why not change out the stone sometime (I suggest without his knowing).

Thanks everyone for your input. My intention was not that I was unhappy with my gift, but rather, I was hoping my husband wasn''t ripped off. I think the earrings are gorgeous, they really sparkle. As far as the clarity, you can see the black spot looking at them on my ear, or if you are holding it, straight down at it. He had purchased a three stone anniversary band from our jeweler back in November, which my husband picked out the stones himself and had it set as a surprise. So we do know some about diamonds. This somehow slipped by him-- I guess it was the heat or something. I also have a gorgous 1.4 brilliant G VS2 engagement ring that he bought me 11 years ago when we got engaged.
Thanks again.
