My fiance had an old engagement for trade at Kays, so when he bought the ring for our engagement, he went to Kays to trade in the old ring for a new ring. The trade in value was about $1450. He purchased a $3400 1 carat non-certified diamond ring. After wearing it for a couple days, I noticed some major inclusions and we just took the ring back and traded it for a Leo princess cut 0.73 carat diamond ring. This ring cost us $4500. I looked at it under a microscope and there are no visible dark spots, just a couple clouds that arent noticeable by the naked eye from what I could tell. It is rated a VS1 clarity and I color with very good/good polish and symmetry. Measurements are 4.89x4.68x3.71mm according to the GSI certification. After reading on this forum, I'm worried we got ripped off and started researching online diamond dealers. I found, what to my naive mind, appears to be a better diamond for a much lower price on James Allen. Here is the link to that diamond. http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/0.78-carat-h-color-vs1-clarity-sku-221904..

Can someone please advise if it would be better to stick with the leo diamond or purchase the jamesallen diamond and return the leo.

Thanks for all your help in advance!!!!

That princess is not comparable to the 1 Leo diamond I've seen.

What does the setting look like?

If you can return it please do and buy from a trusted online vendor . A certified GIA diamond with ideal polish symmetry and cut. Color and clarity can be compromised on. I just worry that you will not be able to return the ring or in the least maybe get your upgrade trade in money back. You may have to use the original money to buy something. But if you can start from scratch start here and all the very informed PS ers will help you find a great ring within your budget.

The diamond is not square, and you can use the GSI cert for toilet tissue... :knockout: return it if you can!

I had a feeling I would be advised to return the leo, does anyone have any suggestions for diamonds and settings in the princess cut. Definitely dont want to be able to see any inclusions. I was very distracted by them with the first ring and thats why it got returned. Trying to keep the budget around 3000-3500. Looking for a pretty basic setting solitaire, 14k white gold is fine.

For a simple white gold solitaire that is too expensive, sorry.

Is it better to look for an "ideal" cut? Some of those examples you sent are nice, but I cant help notice the visible inclusions. Am I doomed to always see them?

I can very barely faintly make out the inclusions, they are teeny tiny! I don't think you'll be able to see them in real life at all! But the staff at JA will be able to assist you further regarding cut and inclusions.

eta: I see the inclusion from the back view on the .77 H VS2, now. It is much easier to see inclusions from the back or side than from the front, where the liveliness of a well cut diamond makes it hard to see inclusions.

I don't know if you can notice the difference between the 4 I posted and the 4 you posted? I try to avoid ones that look gray, it is usually indicative of leakage and weaker brightness.

LOL. It's not even worthy to make it to my a**.

Perhaps instead of being rude, you could offer some insight that might be helpful to the OP!

Faces up a little small, usually princesses are 5.4-5.6 mm for 1 ct. Cut, I'm not too sure about, it does look leaky but sometimes these videos are hard to decipher. You would need to ask about the nature of the inclusions, as it is an SI2.

Would your recommendation be to get a smaller diamond with better clarity or a larger diamond with lesser clarity? I noticed the inclusions on that one carat only seem noticeable from the side.

Princess cuts face up smaller than some other shapes so I would try to go as large as possible, but eye clean is important too IMO. However, there are people that are fine with a small visible inclusion and are happy to make that sacrifice for the larger ct weight. I would actually consider dropping color as low as H/I and maybe J as well.
