Hi all! Please help me with shank style.
I returned previous beautiful tulip ring since stone has blue nuance. I finally found another stone that I love, now I need help with the shank style for new ring.

The original one was classic profile but then I am thinking how about cathedral or raise profile?
I heard that classic style might be more easier that catch something, like hair, cloth, sweater?
My current ring is raised style so I never had that issues.
Is anyone with classic style has that issue? Or it would be just fine?

And most importantly, these 3 style, which one is your favorite?
Please help me decide! Thank you all

I know this all personal preference but, for this design, my eyes are more drawn to one of the first two options with the second being my favorite. They are all beautiful though!!

my eyes go right to #2

My last solitaire was very similar to #2, and I loved it.

To my eye, #2 is the perfect combination of the other two styles, but it is your opinion that counts.

Kim, do you still have photo? Can you show me for reference? Thank you!

I don't have a good photo of the profile on mine, but have you seen one of mrs-b's older settings by David Klass Jewelry?

Wow! Thank you! This is really a good reference! I am debating this style with my original tulip style. This is so hard, both are so pretty!

#2, my favorite!

Thank you all! #2 it is!
but then I need another help here.
I just can not decide which one is the One for me.
I love tulip style so much but then I feel intertwined crown is also pretty.
Metal choice will be platinum so please discard the two tone color.
These 3 style, which one is your favorite? Thank you all!

This one is tough but my vote is number 3. Especially if it'll look similar to what Kim N shared above. It's absolutely beautiful but honestly though, , they all are and I don't think you can go wrong. As others mentioned, go with what you love or you may regret and eventually still long for it in the future (that has been my experience). Which makes your heart sing or are they all equal? Looking forward to seeing what you decide!

Thank you for point that out! It is right! I should go with the one make my heart sing! That will be #2, 1, then 3. I am still debating should I go with cathedral style as I am so use to have no negative space between crown and band. I think I will go with #2 as I like it the most!

Jumping into this thread since I remember reading one of your posts when I was also working with FD on a tulip setting and was trying to take in as much info as possible! Mine has the empty space cathedral similar to design 3 in your first message, but two-tone, and no donut, and arriving tomorrow!

Please ignore me if this is an inappropriate place to ask this question, but do you know and would you be comfortable sharing whether FD is charging a fee for making a new custom setting design, after returning your first custom order (assuming you are still working with them)? Although my completed ring may very well be perfect to me tomorrow when it arrives, I just recently noticed something about the cathedral in certain lights in the 3D print that might bother me. I might decide to exchange and would love to be able to brace myself if there’s a charge/keep that in mind when getting my first impressions!

I’d also be happy to share a photo of my ring when it arrives tomorrow and/or elaborate on my cathedral concern if you’re interested/would find it helpful in making final decision, although if you’re already leaning towards non-cathedral then it might not be that helpful! Unless it helps to decide against which I wouldn’t mind at all haha

It would be very helpful if you could share with me your cathedral style. I am actually thinking about maybe I want to go with cathedral style.

Anyways, they didn’t charge me any extra as I was returning whole set. I am pretty sure you can return your ring or just setting without any extra charges. But they say they only allow 1 return every 6 month.

I adored my tulip solitaire design so much, and I still do. I feel my heart sing more towards tulip style even intertwine crown is very pretty and elegant. New CAD will coming tomorrow and I will see if intertwined crown would actually win over my heart or tulip style would be still my fav.
Do you mind also share your CAD? I want to know what did you see you don’t like and how is actual ring would be like.

Thank you, that's great to hear that no extra charge and makes me feel a little more comfortable asking to exchange if I feel the need to! And happy to share! I’ll go ahead and share my CAD/concerns/resin now and then follow up with real thing tomorrow, probably evening unfortunately. For reference my stone is ~1.3 ct. Here is my CAD (band is set to be 1.8mm high, 2mm wide post polish; and I just used their standard cathedral royale petal shape) and photo of resin, both of which look just perfect to me actually: . Another angle to see how it tapers/thins in the other direction:
But then what I’ve just recently started to notice, usually when there is backlighting and/or a light colored background, is that the cathedral shoulders feel disproportionately thin compared to rest of ring. I don’t think I feel that way in the first set of photos I shared up above, but I tried to capture it more in these photos: . What I’m hoping is 1) since it’s plastic, light is leaking through the thin tapered areas making the shoulders look even thinner than reality in certain lighting (and thinner than solid gold would look) and 2) since the CAD/resin is pre-polish, that a little thinning of the band through polishing will make everything look more proportional.

Part of my worry is also that I asked for some changes to the cathedral since I personally preferred to have minimal taper/pinch in the band that is visible looking straight down at my hand, which is different from their standard tapered cathedral royale design. So I worry I may have overdone my custom changes to that, as someone who isn’t a jewelry designer, when I perhaps should have just let them do what they do best. If you would be going with their standard cathedral then I bet no reason to even consider sharing my concern! I think getting a cathedral CAD to compare would definitely help if you do go more down the cathedral road.

Hope that is somewhat helpful for now. I will also say that I think my concern about the cathedral is just a personal preference to a large degree because I’ve definitely also seen some cathedrals with very thin shoulders compared to rest of ring and I always thought they were beautiful, but I guess I am just very particular when it comes to my personal ring!! Will update with real thing soon to show how it looks from CAD to ring.

I see what you are saying. You don’t want cathedral part taper in from side view; you want cathedral like the phot here, correct? I am pretty sure they will fix that for you.

Thank you so much to mention this to me, I never thought about it. If I am going for cathedral style, I would want the one like in the photo. I don’t really like FD‘s cathedral style, it spread too wide, I like minimum cathedral style.

I haven’t receive my CAD yet, can not do anything right now. I hate waiting…:P2

It arrived! And although I’ve only had it for a bit, I’m actually really liking it! Of course I’ll definitely still make sure to look at it in different lighting environments before the return window. I’ve included some photos below. Apologies, they are probably not the best photos and I already got some fuzz in a prong!

I do think your captured my concern perfectly, thank you for putting it into simple terms haha. If I do backtrack after spending a few days with this version, and decide to remake, I may show that for reference and ask to make the shoulders less tapered!

Hope its helpful to see! :)

Oh~~so pretty! For me it’s a perfect ring! I love perfectly balanced shanks width and cathedral height! I actually decided it going for non-cathedral but now you change my mind again, lol :lol-2:
