hi,
i have been addicted to this site for weeks and now i am ready to take the next step. this is my first post and i would really appreciate any help/suggestion/opinions on this two stones...both ACA.

HCA 1.7

HCA 1.5

when i used the pricescope search function the first stone have a spread of -5% and the other .2% spread, should i only consider diamond with 0% spread?

TIA!!!

Welcome!

These are both beautiful and I think you would love either, but I would firstly check if the SI1 is eyeclean to your standards, so check with WF to make sure. I personally wouldn't worry about the spread issue too much with diamonds of this calibre.

Really nice choices. I prefer the VS2 myself, but they''re both great, as long as the SI1 is eye clean. WF can tell you that, no problem.

wow, thanks for the quick reply. i will ask whiteflash about it being eyeclean.

also, i have decided for now to go up in size from 1ct F/SI1 to 1.5 J/SI1 assuming they are eyeclean. couple of my friends got engaged recently so there is def going to be some rocks compared side by side. how would a J color stone hold up when compared to a F or G color stone? do you think i should go back down in size and stay in a F/G color range?

A J colour diamond which is cut to such strict standards as the diamonds you are considering, should face up very well for it's colour grade. Whether or not it would look as white as an F or G is debatable however as it probably won't, and depends on so many things, and also the cut quality of the other diamonds you are comparing too. You may notice a touch of warmth from the side with a J. What you will find most probably, is that either of these diamonds will blow any others away for beauty and performance! It won't look yellow though if that is a concern - no way!!

Personally I would grab a well cut J in a milisecond, there are many happy J owners here too. But WF do have a good return policy so you can see for yourself how a fab cut J can look, colour preference is a very personal thing. If you can, see if you can check out some similar size and colour grade hearts on fire diamonds, or AGS0 in person, to get a feel for the J colour grade and your own colour preferences.

How will this be set?

An ideal cut (AGS0) can help a stone face up whiter, but when compared directly with a F or G, I think the difference will be noticeable. It''s hard to say what you should do because it''s such a personal opinion. I prefer better quality over size. So I would drop from 1.5 to maybe 1.30 or so and get a better colour.

As an aside: In reality, most people you meet will ask you "How big is it? How many carats?". You''ll meet few who ask what colour grade it is. You''re not going to meet anyone who asks what cut grade it is (unless they''re a Pricescoper!) despite this being probably the most important thing about a stone. So it depends what''s important to you. What other people will think, or what you want?

this will be set to platinum, 6 prongs, 5 sidestone on each sides. found this pic in the "show me the ring" forum and really liked it.

I own both F and J diamonds, and I love them both. The difference in color is so small compared to the difference in price.

To my mind, it isn''t if you can see any difference in color, it''s whether you really care. I love the look of a J, and so do lots of people.

I have to chime in here. Perhaps I am color sensitive, but I think you can definitely tell (primarily from the side) the color difference in F & J....especially in a 1.5 carat stone. To me J looks like weak tea. However, I am fine with G or H (never seen I). I would go look at stones in person and see if this matters to you.

An ACA in a J should stand up quite well compared to the average stone out there but you ought to take the time to look at it before you have it set if you concerned about color. Have WF send it to you and play with it for a few days to make sure you love it. Then send it back (Registered mail with insurance, much cheaper) and have them set it.
Either of those sones will be beautiful!
