Hi all, this is yet another followup to my chipped diamond story. I went to the store today to look at 2 more stones. My fave (and theirs too) was a .73 ct princess, E color (EGL cert), SI. Very beautiful, very white, etc. It will only cost me a little extra money. The other stone they had was an F and we could see the color diff between the 2. It was also .70 ct, but VS2. I don''t mind sacrificing that degree of clarity for much better color and a little bump in size.

Anyway, here''s my question... the one I picked is not perfectly square. It didn''t bother me and it certainly isn''t like it''s an emerald cut shape (although those are beautiful too!). They said they''d set it so the longer dimension pointed down my finger, as opposed to having it sit pointing across my fingers. The mm size was something like 4.85 x 5.25 or something.

Is it ok that it''s not perfectly square? Please let me know asap! They plan to set it tomorrow unless I tell them not to.

Oh, I''ve never seen or heard of a Princess cut THAT out of square. Wouldn''t it have a slightly different look?

I have to agree with Chrono. I think it will have a slightly different look. However, it really comes down to whether or not you are okay with that. I am a princess cut diamond owner and I wanted the ratio of the width and length to me no more than 1.03 for my diamond. But that is, of course, a personal thing. What I really like about the princess cut is the balance and the perfect squareness. Obviously not everyone has the exact same taste. Have you seen the diamond in person?

yes, I saw it and it''s very pretty--it''s just not square. I just called and asked if she could look for another one that was closer to square. I think they''re getting really frustrated with me now... :-(

I''m tired and want this to be done.

It''s okay as long as you like it...but well-cut princesses are usually very close to square, so there might be a few other cut issues going on.

Although obviously it is your choice and whatever you like, i dont know that i would go with a princess that is that out of square. I have .38 ct princess, and it is not perfectly square, and it does bother me more that i thought it would actually. So even if you dont think it will bug you now, it might further down the road. Good luck!

I know I''m picky--I admit it. But if I can see clearly that it''s not square, I just wonder if it''s going to bother me, knowing that my original one was, and that''s what a princess cut is supposed to be! I agree--if it''s that out of square, there could be other cut issues with it.

They are trying to talk me into this one now because I know they''re sick of dealing with me. I''m sick of it too--believe me! All I wanted was for him to set my original stone in my new setting. Now a week later, I still have no finished product!

I have a princess solitaire pendant my parents got for me and it is not perfectly square. It is a pretty stone but it is noticeably longer in one direction. As long as that doesn''t bother YOU, that''s what matters. I was peeved because I wanted the stone set on point (diagonally) and with an oblong stone that looks bad. But if you''re not setting it that way and you don''t mind, it''s not a huge deal.

If you really like it, fine, then get it. But don't get it just because you are frustrated and want this over with. Or because the sales people are frustrated and want this over with. You have the rest of your life to wear this ring. So a few extra weeks or whatever it takes should not be a big deal in the long run. If you have the slightest doubt that it may bother you in the future, I would not get it. You don't want to regret it later.

When I called and told her my concerns, I could just see her rolling her eyes through the phone lines. :-) She said it was kindof hard to find the 2 she did find. I don''t know why it would be hard--I can do a search and find MANY princess cut, F color, SI clarity, roughly .70-.73 ct stones. What''s the deal?

I asked if she''d get another one in for me to look at. She said she''d do some looking and call me back. That was about an hour ago, so we''ll see. I do know now what she paid for the replacement stone they got me (after they broke my ering stone). They paid $1450 (of course, that is the jeweler''s price directly from their supplier--I''m sure I would have paid more). This most recent stone was $1950 (I told her I was willing to pay up to $500 more out of my own pocket, which is pretty good I think since I had NO intention of spending anything other than a setting fee when I started on this venture!)

I''m so worn out from this. A solid week of back and forth. I''m almost at the point of just going with the other one they had that was a GIA F color. It was going to cost me $800 instead of $500. If she calls and says she can''t find what I want, I may just ask her if she''ll let me pay $500 for that stone and be done with it. Her other choice is to keep looking... Or for me to go with the one that''s very out of square with a ratio of 1.08 (or so--I can''t remember exact mm dimensions.)

I really don''t understand why everyone is saying they''ve never seen a princess *that* rectangular before. It''s only got a 1.08 length to width ratio. I just went to the Good Old Gold website and clicked on the first princess that came up on the search engine, and its ratio was 1.23 to 1. This diamond''s ratio is 1.11 to 1.

Now maybe it''s sort of too square to look like it''s a rectangle on purpose, and too rectangular to look like it''s a square on purpose, but if you like it, then go for it. It doesn''t mean it''s a bad diamond, and hey, your fave is your fave!

Well, when I said it was my fave, it was my fave of the two stones they had for me to look at. :-) And part of what influenced me was the price. Anyway, I''ll just hope she can find a more square one and then I can look at this one again along with one that''s more square.

Ok, so she said they had another one for me to look at. They''ll have it tomorrow, and this time, I''m taking my hubby with me for a second opinion. The one I saw today was .73, the one I''ll see tomorrow is .70 (this newest one is basically the same size as my original stone). This one is either an E or F (can''t remember what she said) and it''s an SI and she said it''s square. Weird thing is that she said they basically cost the same, which is weird because if they''re the same color and clarity, and the other is .73 and this one is .70, why isn''t there a price difference? Given a choice between a bigger stone that''s more rectangular and a smaller, more square one that cost the same, what would you choose?

Anyway, we''ll look at the 2 stones tomorrow and compare them. I''ll be anxious to see what my husband thinks of the more rectangular one. Fingers crossed... this has to end soon! It takes me 30-40 minutes to get to this store and tomorrow will make the 5th trip I''ve made there in 7 days... I''m going to do the math on the exact mm measurements on the more rectangular one I saw today. I''m almost positive it''ll come out to be more than 1.05 (which is what most have said is the high end of the acceptable "square").

I''m glad you''re not settling, katiedid. They''re the ones who broke your stone, and they''re the ones who replaced it with a stone that was noticeably more yellow than your new setting. I definitely give them credit for trying to make it right, but in my opinion, it''s not right until you''re happy with your center stone! And I don''t think you''re being unreasonable or difficult, either. I''ll be keeping my fingers crossed for you that you like the new diamond tomorrow!

You are the customer...you have EVERY right to be as picky as you want!!! TOO BAD if they are getting frustrated with you. Any chance you can just ask for a full reimbursement and pick the exact stone you want yourself?

I do think they are being reasonable considering her original stone did not have a report and they are replacing it with a stone that HAS been graded. Just because it''s been 5 days and they haven''t found the right stone yet doesn''t warrant asking for a full reimbursement just yet. They deserve a little time to make it right. It just takes time and both sides have to be patient.

But definitely don''t settle just to be ''done with it''...make sure you like the stone!

Thanks so much! thing2of2, your posting made me feel so much better and really sums up what I''m feeling. They broke my stone, they used something they knew wasn''t acceptable when they replaced it, and then they presented me with 2 options, one of which was out of the price range I told them I could do, and one was a stone that although beautiful, was not square. And then they act irritated that I''m asking to see more.

Believe me, I almost just suggested to them yesterday (out of pure frustration) that they just give me the $1450 they paid for the stone they used as the original replacement. But I feel weird about doing that. So I''m going to give them at least this one more chance. If I go today and neither of the stones work for me, maybe I''ll ask what they think of handling it that way--not in a frustrated or angry tone of voice, but just as an option for them to walk away if they really are getting tired of dealing with me. The last thing I want is a jeweler who just wants me gone to be setting my stone!
