Hello all-- I am a newbie, so sorry if this isn't the right forum.
I am trying to find a diamond solitaire necklace in a specific setting, and I don't know if there's a certain name for it that I should be looking for.
A customer came into my store and I remarked on what a pretty necklace she was wearing. I had never seen anything like it. She actually took it off to let me see it more closely. It was a round diamond solitaire that had a small hole drilled in it, on top, from front to back. I can't remember if it was a bale or a type of jump ring (?) that went through the hole to hold the diamond suspended from the chain. There was no setting "around" the diamond, which is what appealed to me. Just the diamond, the bale, and the chain.
Is anyone familiar with this setting? (I'm not even sure that it should be called a "setting"!). Any ideas as to where I can buy a necklace like that? The woman remarked that she was from out of town, so there's no chance that I will see her again and get to ask her where she might have gotten it.
Thanks for any help that you can provide. :)

Maybe you can spend some time on google looking for something similar and post a picture?

There was a hole in the diamond itself??? Is she sure it's a real diamond?

I've been Googling for days, found nothing that wasn't in some kind of setting

Oh I missed that part. That seems very weird.

There was a hole in the diamond itself, yes. I couldn't swear that it was a diamond but she did say that it was; I only know that the stone itself wasn't overly big (about .5 ct), didn't have the look of any CZs that I have seen, and I did see a platinum marking on the chain clasp. I can't remember if she said her husband didn't like the setting, or something like that (she said it was a birthday gift) but that the jeweler from wherever he got it, then asked about the "non-setting" and he went with that.

From the OP's description, I thought of this pearl earring ... is this similar to what you mean?

I can't imagine a real diamond drilled through the center ... it seems like it would be a tension setting. I did see some findings on eBay that are called "pinch bails," but nothing with a diamond.

Try looking for "drilled set" diamond pendants. I've found a few with the diamonds as part of a more elaborate setting, but none with the diamonds as solitaires.

(actually, it seems all the examples are coming from the same company - so maybe they're the ones to go to if you want a solitaire?)

Thank you! The "dangling" diamond shown in each of the items, is what I am looking for. I will try to contact that seller. I've been Googling so many variations of what I want, but no matter what search terms I have used, I haven't found exactly what I am looking for. I thought that maybe it had a particular name (like "floating diamond" or something) but maybe not.

It occurred to me, as I sit here sweating in the California heat, that you might have problems keeping a diamond set like that clean and sparkling. Diamonds are notorious for picking up oils or any sort. A regular basket or bezel setting usually keeps the diamond off the skin, thereby helping to keep it clean. This might not be a problem for everyone, but I know it would be for me. ;))

Good point. I was also wondering if it would be sturdy enough to wear constantly-- that woman said she keeps hers on, but I would worry about pulling the diamond off. But... I was just fascinated with it!!!

I have seen Rose cut diamonds with a drilled hole before, and diamond briolettes and they need cleaning all the time, as the above posters have pointed out due to contact with body oils, sweat etc from the skin.

I believe SN Queens in LA makes jewelry with drilled diamonds. It's actually quite stunning. I believe they had a necklace in their showroom with about 5 drilled diamonds dangling from it. I hope I remembered the vendor correctly though.

Maybe it was a a Briolette? Was the diamond like an elongated pear shape cut with facets?
I actually saw a diamond Briolette pendant in Florence a couple of years ago and it was just stunning. I'm kicking myself now that I didn't buy it.

No, it definitely was a round. The briolette would be beautiful, though! I have an amethyst briolette but alas, no diamond :(

squeaky - my gut tells me that you should contact Dave at Diamonds by Lauren to ask about this cut. They've had some very interesting cuts in the past, and might be able to help you with this.

Thank you! I just Googled to find the site, and I will contact him this afternoon when I get out of work. I should have pinned that customer down when I had her in the store, to ask where she got it, but I felt that she'd think I was being rude!

I'm heading to SN queens on Friday so I'll take a picture of their drilled diamond necklace in case it's what you're talking about. It's literally a diamond with a hole right through it near the edge of the table and a jump ring to connect it to a chain.

I ran across another idea -- I gather the mystery has already been solved, but I thought I'd toss this in, anyway.

It's called a Twinkle setting, and it's used for the popular dancing diamond pendants. Article here -- http://www.jewellermagazine.com/Article.aspx?id=2711

Thank you for your post. I had actually seen a pendant with the "dancing diamond", but it differs from what I am looking for in that the diamond has two holes, and they go from left to right. Pretty, though!

Ok, here are the pics I promised! SN queens made this but apparently the bench that does the diamond drilling for a lot of LA Jewelers is a follower of Athenaworth's Instagram account! I wonder if you can just have a vendor like DK make you something if you sent him the stones. DK also had drilled diamond earrings on display but I missed them when I was there.

The SN queens necklace is stunning! I'm considering it for myself even though I just got something!

OOH LA LA! What fun! Although I do think a solitaire (like the one squeaky spotted) would be lovely too!

OMG how beautiful! And the stones are exactly what I was looking for!
Thank you so much for going out of your way to take these pictures-- that was very kind of you! I'm going to follow up on this. I just can't get that necklace out of my head! Though, I must say, this piece is much more stunning with so many diamonds hanging from it.
