I am have been looking for a couple of days now in the NYC DD and am a little confused about what is good and what is a rip-off.

I found one jeweler who seemed a decent enough person. He had a diamond that sounded decently priced. What do you think?

Also, is it worth going online and to whom? I took a quick look at Dirt Cheap Diamonds. The site seems like it is good.

Anyway here is the diamond specs(no pavillion or crown)

Square Emerald
1.56 Carat
D Color
VS1 Clarity
Depth 67.7
Table 70
Cullet None
Girdle Thick
Polish Good
Symmetry Good
Flourescence None
6.54x6.50x4.40

$9900

What do you think?

You might also try running some searches for threads on emerald cuts using the search feature here. I'm not an expert on these cuts, but know they are tricker to get well cut ones than some other cuts. The w x l ratio will affect the look of the stone, so you need to have a feel for what you like (long and narrow or fatter or even square). Also, this cut is less tolerant of color and clarity. Inclusions and color will show more than in other cuts, so you need to stay in the higher range on both (which you definately have done here -- you pay a premium for D color -- E & F might be more affordable and still look super white.)

Anyway -- good luck! Get yourself educated and then shop around. The NY DD is a great place but it is easy to get swindled if you don't know what you ae talking about.

Well... I'm guessing from your spec above that you're aiming for an asscher look.

An asscher is a square emerald with cut corners. It has more of an octagonal look to it.

Let me see if I can find a picture for it. I'll post a picture in the next reply.

*** Edited to add this below ***

If this is the look you're looking for, there are a bunch of old threads of PS describing the different proportions for an asscher.

You can also do price comparison using the search engine on PS front page.

Nothing "off" at all in those numbers and the price is tempting indeed.

One thing though: you can see this before buying, right? The stone has a rather large table: this is a square emerald cut which would have a rather different look from what most would immagine an "Asscher" to be (a stone with a very small tabe). Yours will most likely have a shallow crown.

However, this is definitely a worthy buy: with decent cut and a very decent cost. You may want to see a stone with a smaller table (say 55%-60%) for comparison, but otherwise ? Why not.

And... this stone carries a GIA cert, right?

The one seller carying quite a few square emerald cuts, pictures and all is Niceice (example ). Very much worth brwsing before buying anything, IMO.

AnA,

That's an Asscher cut diamond that is pictured on Nelson Rarities Online Gallery.

I found that I particularly like the more octagonal looking Asscher.

Here's a link to a similar looking one that was recently bought from Superbcert.

Yes the stone is GIA cert. I spoke to the jeweler and he confirmed that it was a square cut rather than an asscher.

I found a really lovely asscher in NYC DD

1.51
F
VS1
table 65.2
depth 65
slight thick girdle
no culet
polish good
sym very good
GIA cert

for $9800

What do you think? It looks great.
