Here it goes ladies and gentleman:

Found a ring in NYC and need help.

1- Store is Fortunoff. Anybody have any thoughts about this Vendor? Salesman was really helpful (made a big deal about being careful of the halogen lighting and showed us the ring under an OttLite) but he was only able to show us a copy of the GIA cert. Should I be leary that they did not have the original to show us?

2- Here are the specs: Please, please give us your thoughts on this.
1.51ct Cushion 7.78x7.12x3.68
51.7% Depth 59% Table
Med - Slight Thick, Faceted - Girdle
Culet - None Polish & Symettry - Good
F SI1
Flour - None Addl facets not shown.

Should I be concerned with any of these specs? From the little information learned through PriceScope I think that I can tell that it is not an ideal cut diamond, correct? Too shallow? What else should concern us?

The ring looked "eye clean" to me. I did find inclusions after I louped it. But I don''t think that there was anything visible to the naked eye. But what do I know. My girlfriend liked the ring and she seemed very happy wearing it.

3- Setting- Micro Pave, Platinum with .26ct (29 diamonds) H-I, SI2.

What would be a fair price (ballpark) for all of this?
Would 15-20% on top of cost be fair profit on this?

THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO LOOK AT THIS. NOVICES LIKE US APPRECIATE IT!!!

yea! to the be carefull of halogen lighting comment.

copy of the gia cert is normal for a diamond on memo.
The original is held by the wholesaler who actualy owns the diamond.

cant help much with the specs someone who knows cushions better than I do will help you im sure.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I would appreciate any other feedback out there.

wow..51% depth is quite shallow. were you able to compare this stone to others? if you have looked at many cushions and this one looked the best to you, what more can be said?

as far as pricing, i''m sure one could say that 15-20% on top of cost would be a fair profit, but how are you going to figure the sellers cost?

Good point about figuring out cost. One of the reasons I was asking for a ball park figure of what you people thought the stone and/or setting would cost.

This could help in negotiating a price.

Cushions are tough. If I were you I''d go see as many as you can to get a handle on them. Good luck!!!

there is way too much left unsaid about the setting to try and determine cost on that aspect but as far as the stone is concerned, you can get an idea on price by using the ''pricescope your diamond'' tool at the top of this page. just enter your specs and you''ll get an idea of what''s out there.

Why are cushions "tough"? Does this particular cut hide inclusions better or they are just all over the place. I guess I''m a little confused.

Cushions are one of the toughest shapes to categorize- mainly because there can be so much variation between two stones which both migh be considered "well cut"

For example- I have seen cushions with depths ion the low 50''s that were very nice- and I''ve seen cushions with depths in the mid ''70''s which were also very nice- so there''s a HUGE amount of variation acceptable in the depth department.
I''be also seen BUTT UGLY 50% ( and 73%) depth cushions.

Since you''ve seen the ring and like it, that''s a good start.

I''d say that if you want an idea about the price, the best way to find out is to let us know the asking price.

They are listing the ring around 16K.

did you look up similar diamonds using the search tool?

I have, but I can''t seem to find any diamond as shallow as this one with similar specs. So I don''t know if I can really compare them apples to apples. However, I agree that the PS tool does help frame the price somewhat.

I''d say the price is certainly reasonable for a walk in store- but also that you could probably save if you were to find an online supplier who could satisfy you.

Thanks for the follow-up, David.

I''ve talked the price down to 13.5K on this one. Any thoughts out there?
