Hi everyone. I have been lurking on this site for a few months now. I have just gotten the courage to post.

I am looking to upgrade my engagement ring with a new one for our 15 th wedding anniversary. My original stone is a vs2 g- .81 - round brilliant stone. I would like to get a 1.30-1.50 new round brilliant diamond.

My husband does not want to buy online- he wants to buy it in person. We live in the Boston, Ma suburbs.

I have been doing some looking around at the following stores:
Barmakian, Descenza Jewelers, and Hefez Jewelers. I liked two settings, and one of them is a Sylvie collection setting. I will post the link in a minute. Descenza will discount the setting from $4000.00 to $2900.00 - and I think they will go lower when I am serious to purchase. Hefez makes their own setting that is very similar to the Sylvie one. What I like about the Sylvie setting is that it comes with a flush diamond wedding band- and I was thinking of getting the setting with 2 bands.

Here is the link to to the sylvie collection - the style number is Sy172
http://www.sylviecollection.com/index.php?page=detail&pid=45

Ok, here is my dilemma:

I want to be able to get a vs2 or si1 (eye clean), f to h color, excellent cut stone. All of the stores I visited did not show me a complete GIA report- I wonder once I am ready to purchase- will they have that available to me? The online stores have aset and idealscope images that you can tell you are getting a good cut diamond. I know these stores do not have them. I have saved the link to the HCA and have saved a post that had the correct dimensions. So I am hoping when we go in there - we would be able to tell if the stone is a great cut.

My other concern is the inclusions - and what to be wary of.

I was thinking of going with Descenza since they have the setting I want. I just want to be sure I get the diamond I am looking for.

Any suggestions on how to go about this? Also, I would be open to going to another recommended jeweler in my area- but want a setting where the wedding band is available to fit well.

Sorry for the long post- I am trying to get in all my points.

Oh, and our budget is in the $10,000 to $15,000 range for everything.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me!!

Debi

Hi Debi, and welcome.

Sounds like you may want to invest the $25 and get your own idealscope. It''s supposed to be better than the HCA, anyway, and then you can do your research live at the store....though I would still double check yourself on the angles.

Best wishes,

Thanks regular guy. Do I just need the idealscope or do I need the light as well?

Also, if anyone knows anything about the Sylvie collection- could you please tell me if you would recommend it.

I am looking for a halo that is hidden- not an outside halo- if you know what I mean. I also like that it tapers down with trapezoids or emerals and not just the diamond sitting in the middle - I also like that it has diamonds along the band.

Any other suggestions is appreciated. :)

Hi Deb and welcome!

I am so glad you worked up the courage to post, we are a nice crowd and will take good care of you, so ask away when you have questions or concerns and we will do our best to help you!

Ira makes a good suggestion about buying an Idealscope, I use mine without the light just fine, I just make sure my viewing light is good but with a little practise you will soon get used to using it effectively. With a b&m store, if they don't have access to the lab reports there then the IS is your best bet but personally I would really want to see and read the report and the info given on the stone as I would not want to purchase without it. Unless you are an experienced gemologist ( which for the most part we aren't) there are things you need to watch out for that might not be apparent without a report. Things like grade setting clouds in SI clarities for example, and as SI is on your list as a possible clarity grade this is something that needs to be kept in mind. As a general rule of thumb, with VS2 and above clarities there should not normally be a concern with the various inclusion types assuming the diamonds are GIA or AGS graded.

Also borderline angles such as steep deep (> CA 35/PA 41deg) and borderline shallows (< CA 34/ PA 40.6 deg) need careful evaluation for leakage and obstruction respectively, without knowing the proportions it won't be possible to know of these potential issues and therefore inspect the stone more carefully. Sometimes leakage and obstruction visual effects can be subtle so its good to know if these might be a consideration.

Inclusions to be wary of.....Mainly grade making clouds in SI grades that are drawn on the clarity plot or if it says " clarity grade is based on clouds which are not shown" in the comments section. The key is that the clarity grade is based on clouds, if you see comments such as " clouds are not shown" then that isn't an issue. Its confusing but if you remember that it is clouds that set the SI grade that are present, then these are the ones to watch for. It isn't in all cases that these are an issue but occasionally they can impact performance so you would need an independant expert to check should such a stone come under consideration.

The dimensions you printed and saved will probably be of help to you if you can get the report, so I would insist on this. Then you can either note down the info on each diamond and run through the HCA at home as a supplement to the IS, or if you have a lap top use the HCA on the scene as it were if you can do this in an unobtrusive way!

But also once you find some contenders, get the info and you can always post it here so I and the others can take a look at it for you.

LORELEI- Thanks so much for your response. I was hoping you would post. Your knowledge is so needed in this.

First question- Did you get a chance to look at the Silvie setting that I posted a link to? In person the setting has an antique feel to it and has some fine detailed on the outer edge that you cannot see in the picture. Have you seen anything similar to this anywhere else by another designer or company?

Second - What do you think of the setting- can you recommend something else similar - or what would look good with a 1.3-1.5 round stone. I am fond of the square halo around the round stone - the kind of halo that is not a border but underneath the stone.

Third - I may be able to talk my husband into going to Good Old Gold in Long Island. The thing is- Descenza is deeply discounting the setting- (by about 40%) and some of the designer settings at Good old gold- are more than $3000.00 and up.

Fourth- Do you think I can do this on my budget of between 10-15k including the setting? I was hoping the diamond would be in the 10-11K. range. And do you prefer a vs2 diamond over an si1 if I can budget it in?

thanks so much responding, I appreciate all of your help.

Debi
Hi Debi,

You are most welcome, its my pleasure to help and I will work with you throughout the process if you would like me to.

Lets take a look at the setting, I missed it the first time,

http://www.sylviecollection.com/index.php?page=detail&pid=45

Thats a very pretty setting and I think the vendors might either be able to get that particular one on request or have a similar setting of their own. If you could get to GOG, your Husband might be fine with it as they operate a store as well as having an online inventory, you would need an appointment with Jon. He is a great guy to deal with, also there is a superb pizzeria a couple of doors down apparently so you would be fine for lunch....!
11.gif

Also it might be possible to buy the setting separately if they would sell it without a diamond set in ( some will do this) then you can have the stone of your choice set in it once you find it.

I think you can get what you want for the budget, especially considering SI clarities would help and maybe H to J colour would help maximize the size, but if you can get to GOG then you will be able to see some diamonds in person to know exactly what you prefer.

Here are some example diamonds,

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/5634/

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/6728/

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/6404/

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/6040/

Lorelei- Thanks so much.

Out of the four diamonds you posted - how do I know which is better? Are they all great diamonds? I preferred the third one #6404 because the inclusions are so slight.

I will do some research and see if the sylvie setting might be available to purchase separately- although Descenza discounts it 40%.

I still have some time- as our anniversary isnt until June. So, we were going to do our buying probably around mid April-May.

What can I study to familiarize myself with a well cut and symmetrical diamond?

I am also going to search around for another setting that might be less expensive.

thanks again and when I can think of more questions, I will definitely love your opinions!!

Hi Debi

They are all great stones with excellent cuts, it just depends on preference and in SI clarities which are said to be eyeclean to your standards, the vendors are very used to advising in this capacity.

As to studying, the best place to begin is The Pricescope Tutorial - this will give you a good grounding in all the basics and cut, also in the archives there are lots of useful threads you can access using the search tool. And you can of course always ask!

I am here to help so just shout when you need me and I will respond as soon as I can along with the rest of the team, stonecold, Dreamer, Jet, Yssie and all the other regulars!

Thanks Regular guy and Lorelei-
I just purchased an Idealscope and will be getting it in 8-10 days.

I have a question for you Lorelei- Can I look thru the Idealscope with my current diamond in the setting? And would I be able to get a picture of it to post- so you can tell me what it means? I know my current diamond has a vs2 quality and g color- Im just not sure the cut was good.

Thanks again for all of your help,

debi

Thanks So much!!! That is great!!! As soon as I get the idealscope I will post pictures of my current stone.

Another problem I am having - and don''t see how I can fix it. I was thinking- maybe I would trade in my old stone - the vs2,.81 round that I currently have. Here are the problems: I had the stone reset a few years back and recently sold the old setting. My husband cannot find the Gia certificate for it. I called the Grunberger Jewelers where we bought it and they said they don''t keep a record of the GIA numbers due to security reasons. I called my insurance company and all they have is an appraisal done by the owner of Grunberger Jewelers saying how it is set and the quality. One good thing is the diamond is actually a D color not G like I remembered.

I guess there is no chance in me getting to trade it in or sell it?

I figured I could use the extra cash to get a better diamond (not bigger I think 1.50 is the maximum size I want) or a more expensive setting.

Help!!!!!

Another question- Can i send the stone out to be certified again by GIA - and do you know how much it would cost to do that?

And how much do you think the Jeweler would give me?

And do you think its worth considering?

Thanks so much everyone. I feel like I am in such good hands here!!!

Hi Debi

Yes you can use Idealscope for mounted diamonds. SC provided a good link to help you take photos and I can certainly help you interpret the image once you have it.

Debi, do you have a record of the report number? If so, you could contact GIA and they might be able to issue a duplicate report. Alternatively you could have the diamond regraded, I believe for a full report it costs in the region of $200+, for a GIA Diamond Dossier which is still a perfectly acceptable alternative the cost would be less.

It would be easier to trade in or sell the stone with a lab report such as GIA, but even then unfortunately you can only expect to recoup around 30 - 50% of what you originally paid...

This is an excellent article which goes into greater detail about reselling diamonds.

Lorelei -
I have an appraisal from the Grunberger Jewelers from 1994. Is it possible back then that I did not get a GIA on it? Doesn't it sound strange that he would not keep a record of the GIA numbers.

I did look on that link. I found a page of Independent Appraisers. I called Arthur DeMello. He does the whole state of Massachusetts. He said he could go with us to the Jeweler and look at the new stone we are interested in right there for $150.00 or we can bring it to him once we buy one (He said to make sure we have it in writing that the sale is contingent upon the appraisal). I kind of like the idea that he would be there before we make the purchase, but I don't think it would be cost effective, because what if the diamond isn't great? But I bet it would keep the Jeweler on his toes to have an appraiser right there.

He does have an idealscope and would give me a complete report once it is appraised.

As for the current one I have- he said he would have to see the diamond first to see if its worth trading it in or selling it.

What do you think?

That could be helpful having him with you if you prefer and thats good advice he gave getting it in writing that the sale is final only on the diamond appraising to your satisfaction in all aspects. What I would do is go first armed with the knowledge you have to pick out some well cut contenders that you like ( run the details past us here also if you can), then arrange with the store and the appraiser a mutually convenient time to view the diamonds. As you say if there isn't anything you like in the store and you take him with you then its a waste of time and money so I would prepare first and make sure there are some diamonds that are suitable to view.

Also thats a good idea getting his advice on your current stone, that way you would know how to proceed.

With regards to the GIA report, maybe call GIA and ask. I recall they are quite strict on having a stone regraded so they keep a large database of stones they have graded, maybe they can find the original stone''s report. But that depends on how far back they started keeping track. Getting a updated report will also ease resale of the stone.

More questions.

Here is a setting I may like It is precision set. I like the square halo with the round diamond

Here''s link
http://www.ebhorn.com/jewelry/designer_frame.php?url=http://www.precisionset.com

Can you tell me who else makes a ring similar to this so I can compare?

There was a poster here who had a setting similar from Stardust Diamonds- but I can''t find it.

Thanks again!

I also seem to like Beverley K engagement ring settings. How do I find authorized dealers? I can''t find a link. I am looking to try one on in person - in the Mass, RI area.

You could ask Jon at GOG if he can source Beverley K settings, might be worth a try. Alternatively I think this might be the direct link to them even though it says a specific jewelers but you could email them and ask if they have a dealer in the Boston area,

http://www.beverlyk.com/

I think I will email Jon at Good Old Gold about the Beverley K and Sylvie settings. The Beverley K are much more reasonable. I will also email Beverley K direct to locate a Mass. dealer so I can see them in person.

Thanks for your help again! I wish I could get the ring now- I am getting so excited - but it isn''t too far away.

Another question Lorelei-
I am thinking I might be better off going with a vs2, f-h, color - instead of si1- and get a less expensive setting to keep me on budget. I have been looking on line and the diamonds I am seeing in that range are from the mid 12,000 to mid 14,000 range. And if I go to Good old Gold - I know he will have all of the aset, etc. reports that I will need. Do you think he has a wide variety of settings in the store? I can also locate an appraiser in Long Island to have it appraised before we go back to Boston. I am sort of leaning that way now- takes a lot of pressure of me - and I hear so many good things about Good Old Gold that I would trust them.

Im just confused about what kind of round diamond I am looking for. Do I want a hearts and arrows or just a regular round?

What is your opinion on all of this?

Jon has MANY more settings in store than he shows on his website so this is definitely an option, when you make an appointment tell him what you have in mind and that way he can prepare. Also if he doesn't have a particular setting in store, he might be able to get it.

As to what sort of cut quality to get it depends on your preferences, you don't have to have a h&a diamond to have a beautiful stone, you could choose a near h&a or even what we call a " fine make" cut which could be fine for you. But if you can look in person at GOG then you have the best advantage as you will know exactly what your preferences are once you see the stones in person.

Also have you seen some of the videos on GOG's website? These could be very helpful if you haven't seen them as he does comparisons of h&a cuts with ' commercial' cut quality rounds, let me see which ones I can find for you.

Here is a useful video, comparing two h&a diamonds to a regular round

www.goodoldgold.com

It IS an exciting time, enjoy the process!!

GOG''s setting page is not fully up yet. If you have a facebook account, try and find GoodOldGold and they have photos of their settings there. I think as long as they are a vendor of a designer, they can get everything the designer has.

Thanks Lorelei and Stone Cold.

I just watched the video of the round diamonds. I do prefer the Hearts and Arrows diamonds. So maybe the thing is to go with a si1, h- because I couldn''t tell the difference between the f and h. I am going to do some research on the price and hope its in my budget. I think I can go closer to the 1.3 since Jon said in the video that the H&A diamonds look bigger than the traditional rounds.

I am going to facebook right now to find goodoldgold.

Thanks again this has been sooooo helpful.

Stone Cold- I went to facebook- but I don''t see a list of designers for settings.

I just looked at this diamond on Good Old Gold

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/6404/

(Sorry dont know why it doesn''t link)

But it is in my budget, what do you guys think of something like this?

I am going to study the angles and see if its a good one- I know its too early to get specific - but I am just trying to see what my budget gets me.

Debi just put the cursor next to the last character on the link and press the spacebar, that will make it clickable. That looks like a great diamond and is definitely the sort of stone to look at.

Lorelei,

I did put a space next to it and it didnt turn into a link. ??? I guess I am doing something wrong.

But- I love this diamond!! So, it is within my budget if I can get a setting less than $4500.00 or so - I know if I am close the hubby won''t mind. I am just imposing the budget on myself.

Ok, now I am gonna wait to hear back from Jon and from Beverley K- and go from there.

I am set on making the trip to Long Island. It definitely seems the way to go- it has all of the images I need- and it is a real store so my hubby will be happy.

Thanks again for all of your help. I guess I will keep looking at settings and see what I come up with.

Also, I am intrigued with the Octavia Asscher that they make- but there is nothing in my size at this time- I may keep an eye out for those too.

I just got an email today that my idealscope is being shipped. I can''t wait to see what my current diamond looks like under it.

I will be posting again with more questions I am sure. But I am soooo excited right now. Thanks again!!

Hmmmm.....Make sure the cursor is right next to the last character then hit the space bar, you will get it but don''t worry too much!

Sounds like a trip to GOG is definitely the way to go and it pleases Hubby which is good. The Octavia are fantastic stones, see what Jon has available when you go but definitely ask to see them even if he doesn''t have one in the size range you want at the moment.

Great news on the IS too, we are certainly heading in the right direction!

Update:

I heard from Jonathan from GOG and Marie- we are in the process of searching for a new diamond either round 1.4 or octavia asscher.

QUESTION:

I received my idealscope in the mail. I looked thru it with my ring (It is currently a 5 stone setting) and I don''t see any distinct arrows or patterning. Is this normal? I also see some leakage.

Is it ok to take a picture with my video camera on picture mode? Our other camera is missing the memory card.

I can''t wait to post my current diamonds so I can tell what I am looking at.

I will take a pic - as soon as I hear back from someone on my questions.
