Hi everyone.

All along, I thought picking an engagement ring is as easy as buying a bag for my gf. My plan was just to save up money in a couple of years then just buy a Tiffany engagement ring. But plans have changed, I no longer have the "couple of years" window and I wanted to pop the question very soon (this christmas!). However, I only have less than $1500 budget. And of course, that budget won''t get me any tiffany ring....Now I need your help, how can i get a nice engagement ring that will be within my budget? i haven''t really talked to my gf about giving her an engagement ring....should i just buy a loose stone for her "christmas gift" and then let her choose the ring that she wants?

please, please....any input will be very much appreciated.....

Welcome to PS, Archer! (I don''t know why you''d think picking a bag is easy either!!)

First, Don''t rush it if you don''t find the "right one". Don''t settle just so you can propose at Christmas.

Second, what is her style? White gold, yellow gold? What diamond shape has she shown an interest in? Does she like a solitaire or a setting with more diamonds? Does she want a "matching" wedding band?

Good find, Skippy! (you''re so sweet)

Archer~ if you''re uncomfortable with choosing a setting, you could go with a basic tiffany style setting to propose with, then let her choose a different setting later. You could give her just the diamond, but I think she''d like it better if she had something to wear immediately.

That IS a great find, Skippy! .58 is a nice size stone and it would look beautiful in a solitaire setting!

Would she be open to a colored stone center? Maybe a sapphire?

I'd put a diamond into a setting. You can get a nice tiffany style white gold setting and upgrade when you have the extra money. I know that when I got engaged, I loved showing everyone my ring. I loved having it on my finger. It's not really the same with a loose diamond. You never know; she might love the simple solitaire. And if she wants something different, you can take your time finding the perfect setting because the diamond isn't just sitting in a box.

This diamond:

.52 ct I, VS2 AGS 0 Ideal, 1.1 HCA

...in this setting:

White Gold Knife-Edge Tiffany Style

Total = $1445

Let us know what you decide!
