Hey guys,

I am so overwhelmed with all the options in looking at rings. From Canada and have tried looking at all major retailers including Spence Diamonds who I feel is trying to push me into making a purchase, but then I set foot into Birks and found this ring:

http://www.maisonbirks.com/collecti...e-fiancailles-a-diamant-canadien-et-pave-3106

After all this reading I am told that I will be ripped off buying from stores like Birks, so I'm asking for help in looking for something similar to this ring.

For the centre stone, I'm looking for:

Round Brilliant
Excellent Cut
Colour: I+ (how much of a difference will I see if i avoid I rating and go for G or H?)
Clarity: VS2+
Carat: 0.8
Looking for : Eye Clean
Ring size: 5.5

Am I too ambitious to be looking for all of this at a price point of between $6K - $7K?

Any help would be greatly apppreciated as I feel so lost right now :(

Yes - this is realistic.

Here is a SIMILAR setting. I am not an expert on settings, so someone might be able to point you to a more identical setting to the one you had posted, but this one is popular, well-made, and similar:
18k White Gold "Legato Micro Pave" Diamond Engagement Ring
http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/legato-micro-pave-diamond-engagement-ring-1011.htm

These 3 options push your budget, but are great stones, with top notch cuts and have been confirmed eye-clean:
.947ct, H, SI1
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3328843.htm

.922ct, G, SI1
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3253502.htm

.918ct, H, SI1
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3045724.htm

If you have a firm budget, this stone, paired with the setting above will be under budget:
.90ct, H, VS2
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3334581.htm

The pave collar on that setting is going to be hard to find.

Ask for a profile on this ring:

http://www.brilliantlyengaged.com/isabella-4-prong-empress-micro-pave-engagement-ring-bpid-234-18.html
http://www.brilliantlyengaged.com/zoe-petite-split-shank-4-prong-solitaire-engagement-ring-bpid-73-18.html pave collar but split shank.

Brilliantly Engaged is the best vendor to do a setting with a pave collar like the inspiration ring though.

Those are sample images. Ask for the real images of the stones and the idealscope. They can get them for you.

Thanks guys for your help! I am SO grateful for some help in this process as even typing this is making my palms sweat. Quite stressful trying to find the perfect ring for the perfect girl!

I really like this setting: http://www.brilliantlyengaged.com/31-780-fy-14e-bpid-1145-18.html

I've asked them to send me some profile pictures. I think at the end of the day, the pave collar isn't a deal breaker, but I find it just adds that unique touch.

I've also asked them for the sample images of the stones that you've shown to me Gypsy.

My concern with them is this though:
http://www.brilliantlyengaged.com/0...s-and-arrows-round-cut-diamond-gid-15282.html

This shows a Medium Blue Fluorescence. How does this really affect the whiteness of the diamond on a 18k white gold band with the "I" rating for colour? The clarity Characteristics of a Pinpoint,Feather... if the clarity Grade is VVS2... are these technically not visible by the naked eye?

I've also looked at the stones form whiteflash and spoken via their online chat. I believe 2 of the stones I was looking at the sales rep had told me that they are eye-clean from 10"+. Is this normal? It seems to me that 10" is quite far away from the ring...

Darn... I think I'm too slow with my decision making on these diamonds. All the ones from BE are all gone.

Is this a market where you typically shouldn't really think too long? I.e. if I like it just buy it?

I'm just really worried that I'll get a stone I don't like.

The associate at BE has sent me a comparable diamond's GIA report: $4,317

How concerned should I be everytime I see the "Clarity Characteristics.................................. Crystal, Feather, Cloud" ?

Has anyone ever bought a diamond from.. let's say... BrilliantlyEngaged.com and a setting from Whiteflash.com and had it set locally? I live in Canada... so I'm wondering if this is not a good idea and I should just get it from the same place...

I've decided on these two settings right now:

http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/harmony-diamond-engagement-ring-878.htm

http://www.whiteflash.com/engagemen...p-diamond-engagement-ring-2608.htm#divReviews

I would be open to any opinions from anybody... which one of these do you think would showcase a round brilliant stone the best? I am still looking 0.8 - 0.9 Ct for the centre stone.

Now I just need to find a stone.

Still on the lookout for the right stone... the ones I have been looking at on BE are always gone. It seems like all the ones I find myself are always unavailable.. but they keep pushing this one particular stone that they have on me... is this normal?

WF has very nice settings. And also great diamonds. I prefer the harmony of those two.
Find a diamond there and have it all done at one shot.

Did you look at the Whiteflash stones I recommended above?

Let us know how those stones differ from your requirements, and we'll find you something that works.

I also prefer the "Harmony" setting. Looking at the hand shot, the diamond sits almost unnaturally high on the "Eternity Wrap."

Why not just get the diamond at WF and have it set there? They have a wonderful selection of stunning diamonds. No need to complicate things, in this case!

I have looked at them. I am wondering what would happen with the SI2 ratings on the first 3 you had posted. As in... how does it affect the clarity of the diamond?

Thanks for your suggestions & help RockyRacoon

I'm from Canada too. I considered this method, but decided against it. My concern was that the setter will not take liability for either the setting or the stone if it wasn't purchased from them. Yes, third party insurance will cover it, but I didn't want to potentially get involved in a he said/she said over a bad prong job or a crooked setting with someone who had no responsibility/investment in making me happy. Plus you will end up paying more money in the end (separate setting fee).

Better to buy it all from one vendor, or to buy the diamond from your preferred vendor, get it insured with Jeweler's Mutual, and then send it to be set with the vendor you are purchasing the setting from.

The stones I had suggested are either SI1 or VS2 and have been judged eye-clean, with no detriment from the inclusions. I would speak with Whiteflash about any specific stone, to see if it meets YOUR definition of eye-clean.

I'll post them again here, for your easy reference:

These 3 options push your budget, but are great stones, with top notch cuts and have been confirmed eye-clean:

If you have a firm budget, this stone, paired with the setting above will be under budget:
