I purchased a princess diamond from a reputable vender her in Dallas two weeks ago. I thought I was getting a good deal at the time. I really wanted to buy locally instead of online because of the sizing and other issues. It is a Diamond Broker that is supposed to have wholesale prices. I looked at 4 princess diamonds and settled on the best looking one. $ 4800 for the stone. I was really excited to see it in a setting and get ready for the proposal. When I found this site I quickly realized that I had not made a good decision. Looking at the cut is the most important thing! I got the ring 1 week ago and I was not happy with the scintilization and fire when not in the store. When the stone is in the direct sunlight or inder lights such as the mall or in the bathroom the stone looks fine. I have compared with other stones from other vendors and I can tell you that I got taken advantage of. The clarity and color is what I think That I bought but, the cut is whoreable. I called the Broker and asked about his return policy and he said to just give it to her and if she isn''t happy with it then we can always upgrade to a better stone with full credit for the old one. I wanted to have the best stone for the money that I have spent and I don''t think that I have gotten it. What can or should I do? I don''t think I can trust this guy anymore and I want to get a better stone.. He has a no refund policy. He is also a member of the Better Business Bureau. I purchased this with a credit card.

Thank you for all your responses in advance.

Here are the specs on the stone:

.90 EGL CERT corner cut modified brilliant cut ( I thought I was looking at princess cut)
Crarity=VS1
Color=G
Mesurements=5.63 x 5.33 x 3.86 mm
Girdle=thin to slightly thick polished
polish= good
symetry= good
depth= 72.4%
Table=85%
Crown=6.4%
Pavillion=63%
Florescence= none

$4800

I need help quick. I am proposing in three weeks!

Are ther any tricks of the trade that I can do to get my money back? I really think buying from Wf or JA or GOG is my best option at this time. Am I stuck with this stone? There has to be something that I can do. Can my credit card company help me out? Please help! What can I do?

Sorry you got a dud! The lack of fire and scintillation is probably due to the large table and flat crown. Many commercial quality princesses (or "square modified brilliant" - yours must have clipped corners, hence "cut corner modified brilliant") fall victim to this.

Since there is no return policy, but there is an upgrade policy, I would suggest looking at what else he has in stock to see if you can pull off an exchange. Ask to see GIA or AGS-certified stones if they have any (EGL is soft on color and clarity). Also ask if he carries any AGS ideal princess cuts. When you''re comparing them, look for numbers that fall into Dave Atlas''s parameters to weed out the bad performers (but keep in mind that AGS ideal princesses are often deeper as Dave notes):
https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/guidance-by-parameters-initial-screening-tools.118881/

And be sure to look at them in natural light, not just the jewelry store lighting.

If he has nothing good in the princess department, I would consider a round brilliant, but set it in a square antique-style setting or a 4-pronged head to make it look more like a princess. Well-cut rounds are easier to find by the numbers (you''ll need to know depth, table, crown, and pavilion).

Good luck! Hopefully it will work out for the better.

=(( so sorry about your experience.

Ditto what jstar said. 85% table is HUGE! It''s a very shallow cut diamond and probably won''t have as much fire as an ideal princess.

Why is he being dodge about his return policy? You should ask him again about that. He probably has one, but doesn''t want to return your money because he thought he could fool you!

Thank you for the reply. I think I am stuck working with this guy. I am going to go back and ask him what else he has. I will even go lower in color and clarity to get a great cut. I want the stone to sparkle all the time. not just in direct lighting. Anyone else that wants to respond please do so. Can I get around the no refund policy? Get this. To top it all off. This guy sent the paperwork to my house in the mail after I asked him to have it sent to his store so my soon to be fiance wouldn't see it. It is a real good thing that I got the mail tonight or we might have more than a diamond problem on our hand!

So his refund policy is that there is no refunds???? OMG

If there is really no refunds, i can''t see how you can get around it. Have you tried telling him that you have changed your mind about the stone, and that you now want something better??? maybe he''ll let you choose a new stone in his stock.

Btw, his price is NOT wholesale! PS vendor can offer cheaper prices for better quality diamonds.

Yes I know that now. I am a day late and a dollar short. I should have looked online. I thought it would be better to purchase in person. Now I know different. I know he will UPGRADE the diamond but can I trust him? He never showed me the mesurements or anything for the stones that I was looking at. Now I kind of have an idea of what I am looking for so maybe that will help. It doesn''t change the fact that I probably spent $1500 more than I should have on the diamond that I have now. I know that when I give this to my girlfriend she will not know any differnence, she will be happy with anything. Should I just wait and give it to her and possibly upgrade when we are looking for wedding bands and or settings? I really have spent a lot of time with this (I thought I had when I bought this one until I found this site) and want it to be the right stone. I just set it in a tiffany type setting. I was planning on letting her pick out everything else after the proposal because she has no idea this is coming and I want it to be a surprise.

That seems like the best option for you. When you have more money saved, tell her that she can have an upgrade and buy your stone from this guy. BUT you should post the diamond details here first so we can help you pick the best one. =)

Money isn''t a problem now. I want to have the best stone possible. Not just for her but for me! I am going to be looking at this ring for a long time and I want to be happy with it also. Even if it is going to cost me some more money. I just don''t want to get bent over when it come to the quality.

Then tell him you want to "upgrade" right now.

If money is no problem, this is what i would do.

As you paid with a credit card, is it possible that you might have a cooling off period/ right to change your mind so you can actually return this diamond? It might be worth reading the small print, I don't know what the laws are in the US and this is probably a long shot but I thought it might be worth mentioning.

I think that the best 1ct Princess cuts that I''ve seen have vital stats that look something like:

L:W ratio: 1.00-1.03.
Depth: 65-75%
Table: 60-75%
Crown: 10-15%
Girdle: slightly thin to slightly thick.
Symmetry: very good.
Chevrons: 3-4.

If you can find a Princess with that kind of specification, I''d be surprised if it isn''t well above average. The dimensions are not strict rules, but a general set of guidelines that should avoid a poor stone.

Even if you have only a GIA-cert (which doesn''t comment on cut grade and doesn''t mention crown height), so long as you can see the stone in person, you can look at it side-on "by eye" to estimate whether the crown height appears to be roughly within 10-15%.

As you go up the cut grades for diamonds, each cut grade tends to appear one colour grade better. So, for example, an "ideal/excellent" cut H-colour would probably match the face-up appearance of a "very good" cut G-colour and a "good" cut F-colour. Only when viewed from the edge in some lighting conditions, might there be a hint of colour.

Hope that helps with your search.

Thank You for all of the replies! I think it is past the cooling off period. I believe it is 72 hours. I guess I am going to have to bite the bullet and go in and see him again. I am going to be very honest and polite. I am not happy with this stone and hopefully he will have one that is better. My girlfriend means the world to me and I don''t want her to have to go through what I have been through the last couple of weeks. Thanks again for the replies and please keep them coming.

Would it be worth calling the CC company and just asking them? I know I am clutching at straws probably but I want to help you out of this situation.

I agree with calling the CC company as well.....
