Here is my dilemma….I have been previously looking at 2 carat diamonds that were averaging ~$18-19K and I sort of stumbled across this one while looking with a dealer. I have not been looking very closely below the 2 carat mark so I am not as comfortable judging the diamond. My first reaction is that it is obviously much cheaper than what I prepared to spend (which is awesome!) for a stone that essentially looks like a 2 carat in the same quality range. I know that if you look at this one side by side, you’ll notice a difference, but the size aspect doesn’t really bother me that much anyway. I basically am concerned with my lack of “benchmarking” in this carat range.

As far as the stone in person, I think it is beautiful. I scored a 2.4 on the HCA, but I feel as though it is somewhat comparable to a 1.1 HCA that I was close to purchasing. It is not officially an H&A diamond, but she did show the diamond through the scope and it looked identical to one. The salesperson was extremely nice and actually down sold me from some 2 carats we were looking at earlier. Which…sadly, has made me somewhat skeptical. She expressed that the 1.84 is not only very difficult to find with a "XXX" rating, but it also brings much more value for the budget than a 2 carat. Clearly this seems to be the case.

My questions are….

1) Is there a reason not to buy a diamond just below the 2 carat mark (1.8-1.9 carats)?
2) Is the $14K offer a “fair” deal considering the specs?
3) If it’s not fair, any suggestions on an appropriate benchmark (there are limited diamonds in this range on pricescope and I don’t have access to the RAP)

As always, thanks so much for your time and input! I value all of your opinions immensely.

In my opinion, absolutely not! This is the "sweet" spot

.. Just under the 2 carat mark puts you in the position to avoid the premium charged to full carat sizes. i.e., .85 vs 1.00 carat etc.

2) Is the $14K offer a “fair” deal considering the specs?
I found this diamond via James Allen. It is 1.76 carats, H SI1 and scores 1.6 Ex/Ex/Ex/VG on the HCA and is selling for $12,100 w/PS discounts

Given this info ... I venture to say that your deal could be better but is it "fair" ... possibly. Is it really fair though if you are paying for a diamond that is not cut as well as another one that is just .10 of a carat lighter and approx $2,000 less?

3) If it’s not fair, any suggestions on an appropriate benchmark
Not sure about a benchmark but being naughty as I am ... I found another one on Whiteflash for you ...
2.03 H VS2 A Cut Above -- Worth a look, maybe?

Good luck to you. Let us know what you decide ...

Hmm, if you have to buy the ring in person, you''re definitely getting a good price diamond. Did you use the search by cut feature? At "prices" at the top, under it is search for cut by size, carat, color etc. Keep in mind if you were to get the diamond online, you may not need to pay tax which is a significant saver depending what state you live in.

But if you need to see the diamond in person in order to feel sure, I say go for it!
