Ok, so I need to decide in the next week or two what to set my 1.79 OEC in....and I cannot make up my mind!

Here is a link to pictures of my diamond:

Right now I am torn between two settings at the moment, jbegs's Julia and Victor Cenera's Sophia.

The Julia:

The Sophia:

Prongs:

I am also open to suggestions of different settings. So......what do you think???

I just voted for Victor Canera Sophia Prong.
Beside this, I also like halo settings.

I vote Sophia - not a huge fan of the height at which the stone is perched in the Julia. Perhaps if the stone were lowered into the diamond band, as a bezel, rather than pronged on top..

I voted for the sophia bezel, which i think is more art deco then the prong version but that is just my taste....really I don't think you can go wrong either way.

There is another version of the Julia that does not have the pave, so it sits a little lower.

*Sigh* I am so torn with this all, I have been waiting forever for my upgrade, not its finally time for me to finish it up and I can't make up my mind! :nono: I guess I just want it too look perfect because I am going to have it for a long time.

I voted for VC's Sophia too. He recommended not getting a halo on my low colored OEC, though he would have done it if I really wanted to, he thought the contrast would make my OEC look more yellow than it is and not be as attractive. He has a great eye, I'd ask him for his ideas too.

leinia, Sarahbear, and Yssie...I do loooooove the Sophia. I guess I am torn between having a simple solitaire and have flexibility with wedding bands, or have a substantial stand alone ring.

I think I am going to contact him for ideas, I love his work.

I really feel what you are going through, I went through the same thing recently with my own OEC, I suffered complete analysis-paralysis.
Definitely talk to him, he's very easy to work with and great with giving ideas without pressure.

I am glad that I am not alone in this problem! Lol. I just sent him an email with info and pictures of my diamond, so hopefully he will come back with some great ideas. I am looking forward to hearing what he has to say.

You are not alone. Most of us don't have unlimited funds, so getting it right the first time is important. It's why I took so long to figure out what kind of setting I wanted. Do you currently have a RHR? I ask because if you don't, you could always go for a stand-alone TDF setting for your OEC and then wear different bands on your right hand....

Nope, I don't have a right hand ring. I like the idea of playing around and switching out RHRs. My husband has just started accepting my love of jewelry(hence the upgrade), so I haven't accumulated much yet. This is my first big project.

Make sure you train him well from the get go, lol! You're a lucky lady that your DH understands your love of jewlery. Many women aren't that lucky and it makes things so much easier (or harder, since the possibilites are endless!)

I will certainly try to train him good!! He is accepting it, as painful as it is for him. :errrr:

Sophia prong - the best choice out of the bunch, IMO!

I love the double prongs (claws). The whole design of the setting goes so well with your vintage diamond. Looks great...and the double prongs will help keep your stone secure.

I prefer the Julia. I think the Sophia bezel is lovely but it's a very heavy look and I prefer the lines of the Julia. Oddly enough if the Sophia were in yellow gold, I might vote for it. Your stone would look amazing in yellow gold.

I think the Sophia prong is beautiful, but I would prefer a curve in that shank. It's a very sustantial look. IF that's what you want, then this one gets my vote.

I wish I had two diamonds so I could do both settings.....if only. Haha.

I vote the VC Sophia! (But, I may be little biased since that photo is mine)

bright ice, I love loove loooooooove your ring, if only my center diamond was the same size!

Thank you very much armywife13. I think your stone will be just as beautiful in the setting!

I was told by someone who has old stones and is a GG that they really need to be in a bezel because of the very thin girdles because they are going to be very prone to chipping otherwise. If I bought an old stone and wanted to set it in prongs, I'd probably send it to someone like Ari at Singlestone and see if they can make the girdle a little less thin. It would be worse to me to later have to unset the stone because of a chip to have it polished out (or worse, the chip might cause the diamond to have to be recut).

You being up a good point. I am going to get the diamond appraised before it is set, if it comes back that the girdle is very thing I will definitely be sending it over to Ari!

I like the plain Julia the best!! If you do go for the Sophia, I would get the pronged version. The bezeled one just looks too heavy in my opinion.

TOTALLY! I just bought an OEC and that's exactly what I am having done. Mine is at the diamond spa at Brian Gavin getting a girdle put on it as we speak. It had a chip and NO girdle and surface abrasions. They are faceting the girdle and polishing up the rest of it for me. At 350 a carat for a recut it's COMPLETELY worth it for the peace of mind to know that I can wear it without fear of additional chipping and set it in anything I want. Plus it makes the setting process much safer as well.

HIGHLY recommend.
