Hi,
I am about to buy a round brilliant engagement ring, and today I spoke with a representative at the online diamond store about the diamond I think I want after having looked through their inventory online. However, after looking into the specs of the stone some more, I am wondering if I am making the right decision. The diamond I was looking at is:
1.27ct
GIA cut rating: Excellent
Depth: 62.6%
Table: 56%
Girdle: Medium, faceted
Culet: None
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Clarity: SI1
Color grade: F
Fluorescence: Faint
Crown angle: 35 degrees
Pavillion angle: 41.4 degrees
Price ~$8,100
I figured this looks like exactly what I want, and it is within the price range I want (~$8K). However, I found the Holloway Cut Advisor tool on the periscope website, and now I am no longer as certain. I entered the data into the tool, and I got the following result:
Light Return was graded "Very Good"
Fire was graded "Fair"
Scintillation was graded "Fair"
Spread was graded "Very Good"
Total Visual Performance - 4.8, Good, only if price is your main criterion
So, I then looked at another diamond with the following specs:
1.23ct
GIA cut rating: Very Good
Depth: 60.7
Table: 56%
Girdle: Thin to Medium, faceted
Culet: None
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Clarity: SI1
Color grade: F
Fluorescence: None
Crown angle: 34.5 degrees
Pavillion angle: 40.4 degrees
Price: ~$7,300
I figured this diamond would be not as good since it has a lower cut grading. However, when I entered the data into the Holloway Cut Advisor, I got the following results:
Light Return was graded "Excellent"
Fire was graded "Excellent"
Scintillation was graded "Excellent"
Spread was graded "Very Good"
Total Visual Performance - 0.6, Excellent within TIC range
Soooooo....now I am confused and concerned. Which one of these should I go for? The second diamond with the lower (Very Good) GIA cut grading costs ~800 less, yet it seems to get a better score as far as light return, etc. With everything I just read on another post, it seems like perhaps the GIA cut grade rating of Excellent vs. Very Good might not be all that telling?
Can anyone tell by the info above which one might be a better choice??
Appreciate any help!
Glenn
