OK fellow PS’ers, I need some help! I’ve been looking at photos and reading your advice for several weeks now, mornings, evenings, late nights… Until I’m blue in the face!!!
I’m looking for an eternity band or 5-stone ring for my fiancée; she has long elegant fingers and wears a size 5 ring on her left hand. This is great, except, many of the rings I’m interested in have diamonds that would require a setting too large for her finger. I started looking at full eternity bands (or 90% with sizing bar) but in 40 points those are somewhat pricey. I then thought a really nice 5-stone would fit the bill, slightly larger stones could still fit within the budget. This will be the only ring she wears (unless she adds very small wedding bands on either side, like zestfullybling did, her look is beautiful), so I want it to be “nice” but a bit conservative too. My intended and I dated in college, 30 years ago, and just "re-met" a few years ago. For 30 years I thought of her as "the one that got away", now it seems I'll be able to rectify the situation! So, we are "older" and I'm looking for a ring where people say, “Oh, that’s a nice ring” and before they finish the sentence they are thinking to themselves, “Whoa, that’s a Really nice ring.” Whether or not I go with ACA or “H&A diamonds, or something similar, at the least I’ll be looking at VS2 or SI1, E color, and either GIA 3X or AGS 000. And HCA around 2, if I don’t get IdealScope and ASAT images.

My problem:
many of the posts I read suggest 30 points for a size 5 ring is about the max, unless one doesn’t mind the diamonds “hanging over the side”. Which I don’t want – I’m looking for something spectacular… that also looks like it was made for her particular finger. Price is of some concern, but it seems I might be able to afford more than what would look good on her. OK, let’s see if I can save a few thousand words with some photos.

Here are three showing the size five finger in question:

Here is a graduated ring that I like from the top (as a complete aside: this must be aesthetically one of the best PS photos ever, although there are some other mighty good ones to view); if memory serves it is a size 6.5 and the stones are .56, .41, and .33. Something that “could” work in a size 5; on the other hand it seems like it is kind of maxed out with the size 6.5 ring:

Here is a photo of Demelza’s Shasha Primak 2.56 tcw 5-stone that got me interested in “all of this” to begin with:

I like how each diamond is separate from its neighbor; from the top view the diamonds just seem to hang there. Also, each diamond seems to look a bit larger (to me), since the prongs are close together there is more diamond to “overhang”. I've looked everywhere but cannot find what size this ring is. Seems five 50 pointers might be too much for a size 5 ring.

I'll try and close; here is an example of what I don't think my fiancee will like (but I think this ring is spectacular); a larger center stone with two quite smaller side stones, hawaiianrosetree's five stone 1.0 .40 .20 trellis in size 4. She made this work fabulously, by "placing" the two side stones "under" the center stone. However, my fiancee wants something that hugs her finger; one reason we aren't looking at solitaires...

Here is another of the more spectacular 5-stone rings I've seen on PS, eXistentia's 1.0 .55 .50 rose gold setting seems to really showcase the five "white" diamonds. I think this is one step "blingier" than what my fiancee would wear, plus this setting looks great in size 7-3/4 but I'm afraid in size 5 we would be out of luck. But, maybe the .60 .40 .30 sizing that I'm attached to would work...

Last photo; left to my own devices, if I had to choose right now, I'd choose a setting something like the BGD "Sally" but with a trellis setting and probably leaving out the side accent diamonds, using a .60 center stone with .40 and .30 side stones - and hope it doesn't "overhang" too much in a size 5 setting. I do think with a small finger and graduated stones the knife edge (though perhaps uncomfortable) might continue the graduated look from diamonds to setting - I just really like this view of this setting!

OK, I lied, here is a fabulous example of a simple trellis design: katiedid's 5-stone trellis in size 5 with 30 point stones. But I'm wanting a 60 point stone and two 40 point stones (and then two 30 point stones), if possible. Regardless, this is a great example of a setting showcasing instead of competing with the diamonds.

Thank you in advance for your help and wise council. If this long first (nearly) post doesn't get me banned from the forum, maybe nothing will.

If I don't gain some level of comfort I think I'll just have to whisk my girl off to either Houston or NYC and try several rings on and see what looks good on her finger.

Thanks again!

Re: Need help choosing spectacular 5-stone or e-ring in size

Sorry if I haven't read your entire post carefully - are y ou trying to surprise her? I think she should try tings on for both Looks AND comfort. Not everyone finds eternities (90% as you said) to be comfortable with bigger stones, although some people don't feel the stones between their fingers much at all. I have a 5-stone with .20 pointers in size 4, and as long as they are on top of my finger goodie goodie, but if they swing around to the side they hurt.

Re: Need help choosing spectacular 5-stone or e-ring in size

i think if you wanted it to be graduated, i think i might have an idea. Now this might not be the right math, but i added up the mm of 5 30 pointers which would be about 21.75, so all the stones together would have to have the same mm difference, right? So you could do like, a 5.5mm stone plus 4mm and 3mm sides.

i think that would be like a .6ct, .25 ct, then i dont remember what 3mm would be, 10 pointer?... cheapest would be just to have it set in a shared prong setting, and i dont think it would run you too much money, especially if done in a I-J range

Re: Need help choosing spectacular 5-stone or e-ring in size

Also i think the idea of .6, .4, and 2 s are going to be too, too large. Just for reference, heres a ring i am currently working on, i wear a sise 7.25, and my center stone is .8, and the sides are .32 and .15 (6.1mm, 4.3mm, 3.5mm)....

so just keep in mind youre going to want to look at mm sizes, not the ctw.

Re: Need help choosing spectacular 5-stone or e-ring in size

Thank you, both, for your advice. I am not trying to surprise my finacee with a ring and expect the only way to see what our options are is to try on some rings at the local B&M store this weekend; hopefully they will have some "larger" eternity bands as well as 5-stones. For step two, I guess a trip to NYC or Houston will be in order. I've got business in NYC anyway (Go-Go's playing there in a couple of weeks too!) so maybe she could meet up with me there and try on some rings (Leon, ERD, ID Jewelry?). What a hassle; one day I'll be enthused and the next wonder if we need to spend "real" money on a ring at all! If I can find something that is really nice, that really fits her finger and personality, then it will all be worth while!

Re: Need help choosing spectacular 5-stone or e-ring in size

I have a much larger finger and I have a .10 each eternity band. I really like the size. It has bling and is very comfy without being over the top. Everyone comments on it.

Re: Need help choosing spectacular 5-stone or e-ring in size

i really dont think traveling all around the country is necessary. Has she tried on a 5 stone in general. any sort of graduated ring? even just a three stone with the particular proportions you had in mind

I really dont think your proportions of .60ct .40ct .30ct would work if you've read 5 30 pointers is all that will fit on a size 5 finger. but i love the graduated idea.

Re: Need help choosing spectacular 5-stone or e-ring in size

I have a 5.5 finger and had a five stone with .20 pointers each. It covered the finger but if I was going to do it again, I would do .30 pointers. Also, how high or low your setting is going to be will affect how it looks on the finger. I like a lower set five stone that hugs the finger myself.

Re: Need help choosing spectacular 5-stone or e-ring in size

Neil, thanks for the link! Julia's ring is very nice, and very similar to what I'm trying to do. I like the idea of a graduated 5-stone but might see what can be done now with a 30 to 35 point full eternity - those stones are a lot less expensive than their 40 point relatives! Taking my girl to the jeweler's this weekend so maybe clarity might be on the horizon. Even if it is just clarity about what she doesn't like...

Oh, as for budget; I'm really pretty open now. I got a price on a 40 point 90% eternity just below $13K and was going that way; then found out it would really be $18K so I kind of nixed that idea. Thought originally $10K would be a good upper limit but really, now, the first priority is to get a fabulous ring that my fiancee loves.

That's a very nice budget. I personally think a 5 stone is more engagementy, though I know I'm biased. I just think also for every day wesr I find them more practical and comfortable. I know mine was Ks and you'd probably be aiming more for H+, but my 5 stone above was 4k. I mean a lovely BG setting would still leave you what, 8k for stones?

Re: Need help choosing spectacular 5-stone or e-ring in size

My fiancee and I are older, and the 5-stone or eternity will be the only ring she wears - unless she decides she wants one or two thin bands like ZestfullyBling had with her 5-stone, to wear on special (bling-y) occasions like going to the symphony. For everyday she would just wear the one simple (ha-ha) ring. At the most (largest size), thirteen 35 point stones plus a ring should be under $14K... In a 5-stone ring I don't know that we could get to $10K no matter how nice the stones, since we may be limited to stones in the range of 30 points.

Just saw your last post; that ring (is the one I posted a photo of in my original post) is truly spectacular. Fabulous in a size 7-3/4; we cannot quite do the 1.0 .55 .50 thing in a size 5 though. I never thought I liked rose gold until I saw this ring!!!

Re: Need help choosing spectacular 5-stone or e-ring in size

I'm not suggesting you do it with those 1ct sizes, but you can get the same radio by shrinking the mm size of all the stones. Which is why I think a 5.5/4/3mm would fit her small finger. And still be subtle. And more comfortable. Is what I'm saying.
