so next year it''s my 50th birthday (let''s move quickly past that part of the story)

and for a gift from my husband, i''m considering requesting an asscher diamond band to be made by Leon M.

the stones i''d be looking at are about .30ct each (i''m looking for stones around 3.8-4mm sq), probably 6 to the band. this will most likely be the last diamond ring we ever buy, so i''d like to get as high a grade of stone possible. my question is - where would i purchase these stones? given that leon, while being a genius jeweler, is not a hugely collaborative kind of guy, i''d prefer to present him with the stones i wish to use, rather than breathe down his neck as he sources these stones himself - given that i''m going to want something very specific and lovely.

so first question - any thoughts on where i could source stones of this kind?

secondly - i''ve never bought individual asschers before, so i have no idea (well, not much anyway) on what i''m looking for in the first place. so all help on getting a set of 6 matching would be great.

thank you!

This is what I would do.
I would contact Jon at gog and have him contact DiaGem and have them custom cut.
Since you have a lot of time and want the best that would rock!
Then I would have the ring made by Mark Morrell.

Otherwise finding 6 matching asschers can be a nightmare and take a long time.

Dang! Just when I think I can wean myself off PS, Whitby and Storm cook up this intriguing plot! I guess I''ll have to stay tuned because I can''t miss the sure-to-be-stunning results! Seriously, congratulations Whitby on finding a truly wonderful way to celebrate your upcoming "milestone" birthday!

stormy - thank you!

i figured i could get them custom cut somewhere. and i'd love to work with GOG; i'm actually going up to meet them first week in september re a different project, so will roll this in.

do you have any particular reason for suggesting MWM over Leon M? i'm after an art deco feel to this, which i think would be a bit of a Leon specialty. but i've been noticing MWM's designs more and more, and they're extraordinary. can you explain your preference for one over the other?

thanks storm!

thanks sarap :)

this won''t be the big solitaire i thought i''d have for this birthday, but this will be a very classy, very high quality, unique ring. and i will LOVE it. asschers have always been my favorite cut; from the time i was a little girl, whenever i heard the word ''diamond'', an asscher is what i pictured. i wonder where on earth i saw one as a small child to make *this* my mental picture of a diamond?! i can''t remember anyone in the family with one....

anyway, will keep you all posted - i''m planning on having my 1.5ct studs reset a la the ''adriana'' by leon also.

yowza!

For none pave work I like Mark''s work better.
Plus gog has a relationship with him that would be awesome for this project.

Whitby, I''m so glad you brought this up--I plan to do a very similar project in a couple of years and wasn''t sure how to go about finding matching asschers. I cannot WAIT to see how this turns out!!!

thanks storm - got it. will talk to GOG about this whole thing when i see them in september.

NewEnglandLady -

i have a feeling you and i have similar taste - have read your posts etc and we often seem to be on the same page re jewelry. this is gonna take some time - my birthday is next year - but we''ll open the ''asscher ring bank acct'' and just work towards it, like we work towards everything. i enjoy the process and always have a few projects in the works at any given time. can you tell me a bit more about what you have in mind? i want 6 or 7 stones (am thinking maybe .35 each at this point) yellow gold, very tapered band, bit of an art deco look to it. leon had something like this with 5 stones on his web site a while ago, but i''ll blowed if i can find it now.

would love to hear more about your project NEL....
