Hello, I have been reading posts on this site for a while for information on my decision to purchase a princess diamond, and thanks to your help, I have learned a great deal. I now need your help. I am thinking of buying a .7ct, VS2, I princess, depth 71.7%, table 65%. It seems to fall within the paramaters for a desireable cut, but I have no way of discovering the crown/pavillion data, as the wholesaler does not have a sarin machine. My budget is $2000, a princess is a must, and cut and ct. are the two most important pieces to me. The price is $1770, what are your thoughts? Thanks in advance for your help.

The alternative to this diamond is a .87VS1, I, 10% crown, 70.4Depth, large table of 79. Which would you buy if you were me?

To be honest, if cut is important to you...you may need more information. If you can't get a Sarin, then get an IdealScope for $25 off Garry's site and use it to determine the light return of the stone. With fancy stones like this, the numbers do not always tell the story as it's the light you want to see reflected from the stone.

I don't know much about princesses or fancies in general, but check out www.gemappraisers.com and their DIY cut grading charts and charts in general will help you determine where this falls in terms of cut grade. But again, you would need more info if cut is important.

Or you can try shopping online with some of the vendors who sell princesses and give you IdealScope images and even some Bscope reports. www.superbcert.com has a branded princess collection, www.goodoldgold.com has hand-picked princesses with reports and pictures (http://www.goodoldgold.com/princess.htm), www.whiteflash.com has some expert selection princess picks with idealscope images and sarins, www.dbof.com also has their own princess cut (http://www.diamondbrokersoffl.com/bfireprincess.htm) which looks lovely in pictures and has amazing Bscope reports, and lastly www.dirtcheapdiamonds.com has their own signature princess (http://www.dirtcheapdiamonds.com/signature-series-princess.cfm)

So if you are game...see if you find anything comparable with more information, such as the sarin and the idealscope images at the very least. If not, then you may want to check out Gemappraisers link above and see if you want to take a gamble on the stone you originally asked about!

Good luck!

If this Vendor is selling to the public then the Vendor is NOT a WHOLESALER!!! Wholesalers sell to retailers who sell to the public. The Vendor may offer very good prices, but you are dealing with a retailer, not a wholesaler.

I'd also be careful of an I color for a princess stone. It might be fairly white, but it also might just have too much of a tinge of yellow for the recipient.

Thanks for your help. I should mention that the diamonds in question are from two sites frequently mentioned on this site. I am in a bit of a rush to make a purchase decision, as I am flying out to propose to my long distance girlfriend of several years in early February. I cannot have it shipped there as she lives in England. I know that I should not have waited so long, but that is my situation, so I must choose something quickly. I have both diamonds on hold for 24 hours at this point, or can go another to another site if that is the way to go. Desperate for help! Thanks.

I guess I read your earlier post the wrong way.

Your best bet for finding a nice princess cut in the time you have is to work with Vendors that have diamonds on hand. Mara's Vendor suggestions are very good. All of them have plenty of info available for you to make an educated buying decision. Compare each Vendor's return/refund/upgrade policies. You never know when you'll be in the market for an upgrade in the future!
