Hi, I have been using this forum for information while picking out my engagement ring. I found a style of setting I loved at Tiffany and then read here that it was a Vatche x-prong. Thank you! Then I went to the Vatche website and found I preferred the royal crown setting - found a local retailer - and went to her store. Her son is a diamond wholesaler and last night we looked at diamonds and narrowed it down to two. My fiancee has to call TODAY to make the purchase and I would like some feedback on the pricing please.

My first choice is a 1.24 ct H&A D / SI1, 7.05 x 7. The diamond''s info said "excellent/excellent" but I can''t remember what that refers to. This diamond is priced at $8200.

My second choice was the 1.24 ct H&A H / VS2, 6.93 x 6.88. The diamond''s info said "very good/very good." This diamond was priced about $1000 higher.

I definitely liked the sparkle of the first choice. But we need to know if the pricing is right or if we need to go somewhere else?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

Hi EG, welcome to Pricescope!

We need a bit more info please, do you know which labs graded these diamonds? That can have a big influence on price, is it GIA, AGS, EGL, IGI? If you could let us know, then we can go from there. Also by the way, a vendor who sells to the public is a retailer not a wholesaler, although they may use these terms, apparently it isn't the case, this one comes up a lot! Also as Paul points out the price of the second one is strange to be higher than the first one...

Also if you want, post the proportions of each stone, then we can help you evaluate them. We would need the -

depth%
table %
crown angle
pavilion angle
girdle thickness
polish and symmetry grades

People helping you here would need more info, like crown and pavilion angles, possibly idealscope, to be able to give advice. If you want to compare prices, you can use the pricescope-database to find comparable stones.

One thing bugs me though, in normal circumstances number 1 should be about 10% more expensive than number 2. Not the other way around.

Live long,

I believe it was AGS.

I believe it was AGS.
For both?

We were surprised too that the D was less than the H, as was the retailer. She pointed out that the D was a "brand new" diamond as the date on the certificate was about a month old, not sure if that makes a difference.

I''m just using the words she used :-) She is retailer for Vatche, and her son works for the diamond wholesaler where she gets her diamonds.

Yes, both certificates were from the same source.

I doubt that the lab was AGS, considering the VG/VG, unless the reports were DQR''s and not DQD''s.

Ok, I will try to verify and post back what I find out.

Sorry to ask you for yet more info, as these are both EGL, do you know if they are EGL USA, Israel, Antwerp, Europe etc? EGL USA is considered to be the strongest lab for grading, so if you could find out, that would be very helpful.

The first appears to be a shallow diamond, if you prefer this one, check it out carefully in as many different lights and angles you can, to make sure you like the look of it. The second diamond also appears to be more on the shallow side also, did they have any other diamonds you liked the look of? It would be best to compare with some others, see if you can look at some AGS0 cut grade, or Hearts on Fire to see if you still like these two.

THey are both EGL USA. We had 8 to choose from last night and the D immediately caught both our eyes. It came down to these two and the D continued to look the best to both of us.

Any feedback on the pricing levels at all? Thank you!
