All things being equal, would you go with an H-VS2 or a G-SI1, assuming the SI1 is eye-clean? We are talking about a 3 ct ideal cut round stone that will be set in yellow gold. FYI, in case you were going to suggest G-VS2 and and a smaller stone, I have considered it but will definitely be going with 3 ct. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Can you post the proportions of both diamonds please? The cut is very important so if you could post the numbers, then we can help you evaluate which might be the best performer, as it would depend on the cut for me to be able to choose....if I was the lucky recipient....

I don''t have dimensions at the moment, but both will be ideal cut. For the purposes of discussion, lets assume the proportions are identical.

Ok, assuming that both diamonds have excellent proportions, what would be the price of each and which lab report?

I know I am probably not helping much, but lets also assume that price equal, or relatively so.

Ok, we need which type of lab reports as this can make a difference, GIA or AGS? Assuming this is the case, then from the info given for a hypothetical purchase, I would probably pick the G SI if eyeclean. I think the answers could be pretty mixed here according to personal preference!

Thanks a lot for the prompt response!

I agree with Lorelei. I would personally choose the G-SI1 AS LONG AS the SI1 is eye-clean.

But I also agree that you really do have to take the other factors into account - price point, each stone''s proportions and lab reports - just because I don''t think you could find two stones that are identical to each other aside from the color and clarity

Agreed, G-SI1, eye clean.

Do you think there is a significant difference in a 3 ct round stone between a G-SI1 and an H-SI1 or will it be hard to discern the difference?

Assuming that these diamonds have equally good cuts and lab graded colour, you may get the odd colour sensitive soul be able to tell with direct comparison when the diamonds are unmounted, mounted less so, but I would think most people would find it challenging to tell the difference with non direct comparison, or even with it, too many variables in reality.

Since it is being set in yellow gold, I''d go with the H-VS2, but that''s just me.

Honestly, assuming both had identical cuts (which probably isn''t true) there won''t be much difference between the two. I suppose I would go for the G/SI1 since color starts to be more noticeable to me in larger stones.

I would fucus on cut quality though and just pick the most well-cut stone, since these are few and far between in the larger sizes.

I have an H-SI1, and would improve the clarity before the color. The color doesn''t bother me, but I can see the inclusions, especially from some angles and in some lighting conditions. My stone also probably meets most people''s standards for eyeclean.

Plus its going in yellow gold. H should be fine!

I wouldn''t want a 3-carat diamond, I''d choose an E/F VVS/VS stone of no bigger than 1.5 carats. But you want the 3 carats -- and these two are so similar (one has lower clarity while the other has lower color) -- so just look at them with your eyes and choose the one YOU like best. Good diamonds have personality, and you can''t judge that by stats on a piece of paper

G-si1.....good luck!
