I just purchased a diamond from Good Old Gold. For those of you who have done the same in the past, I imagine you know the detailed appriasial that comes with the stone. I can identify that the stone I have is the same one on the GIA cert. My questions is: with all of this work having already been done by GOG, is there a need to have this stone re-appraised by a 3rd party?

I would really appreciate your opinions and experiences with your own 3rd-party appraisals of stones from GOG.

Thanks!

Some ppl feel more comfortable with another appraisal. Personally, though, I don't do things quite as methodically. If I trust a jeweler and have already gotten a ton of info about my stone, the only reason I'd get an additional appraisal is if I were planning on insuring the ring. In that case, you would only get the appraisal after it's been set.

The insurance co would want an independent appraisal

Honest opinion? I assume you are in NY, as GOG is. I too am in NY, and I have searched for reputable appraisers with the kinds of tests and reports like GOG. Sadly, there are NONE I have found. So, that said, I can only say that GOG will most likely be your best appraisal for reports and facts about your stone that you will find in NY. They are also posters here, so their credibility has been well supported in the past, and I doubt that any false step would happen, as their reputation here is so well established...Fred Cruellar they are NOT!

Rest assured you are safe and your stone has been all tested out at GOG...If you love it, I say enjoy! I am always cautious (sometimes overly) and even WE didn't appraise our stone over what the jeweler who sold it to us had. Why? We got a branded stone that only two New York jewelers carry. To get this stone took us three months. I doubt he could have replaced it surreptitiously in a few DAYS while it was set...

Most insurance companies do not require a third party appraisal. Many people buying a diamond feel they need assistance or to have their hand held. It stands to reason, as many are spending big bucks on something they don't fully understand. Maybe not everyone is dealing with someone they totally trust. It is rare to have such a great feeling about someone you really don't know very well.

Anyway, that's why there are people who do this independent appraisal thing. We are glad when someone makes you feel totally happy and pleased. It is rare to find such a great place to do business. For the majority, someone reliable who is not the one making the sale, can be very comforting to have along.

I don't think it's necessary. It may set your mind at ease, but it's not a need. GOG's appraisals are very detailed and pretty hard to beat!
