I''m trying to find an engagement ring for my girlfriend. I have read many post on pricescope about people buying their rings at Costco. I just would like to recieve some feed back on a 1.10 ctw Princess Cut Three Stone Diamond ring that i like on the Costco.com website.

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11029688&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&bp=category&Ne=4000000&N=4010130&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&img=0

Desc.:

- Platinum
- Princess cut carat total weight: 1.00 ctw
- Center diamond weight: .50 ct
- Round diamond carat total weight: .10 ctw

Clarity to be "VS2" or better and color to be "I" or better as outlined on the industry grading guide.

Any feed back would be helpful

Thanks!!

Generally PSers are very particular about cut quality as this is what makes a diamond beautiful and is so important. Really we don''t have much info about this ring. It doesn''t say which lab grades it so the I VS could even be a K SI for example. It seems cheap for this type of ring. Personally I would advise looking around and comparing and buying a diamond with known cut quality and grading, this style of ring can be found anywhere really. However if it is what you want it could fit the bill, but you really have no idea of what you are buying with these preset diamonds, the cuts could be very different between rings, things like girdle thickness which can be problematic in Princess cuts as they can be prone to chipping you need to be wary of. You could receive a ring with a very thin girdle for example which could chip with a knock ( possible with any diamond but more so with a Princess cut). If you are set on this ring, look around first before you pull the trigger and see what else you can get for the money. A little extra time spent now will pay dividends.

With a total weight ring like this, I''ve seen only minimum grading parameters given on paper. This tells you nothing about the "actual" grading of any of the three stones. Too vague. Not enough info.

I really like the look of this ring.

Have you seen it in person?? does it sparkle, in your opinion? I agree there isn''t alot of info given here ,especially regarding what lab graded this ring.

What would be your budget for an ering? You can get get lots of super help on this site!!

I say, though, if you have seen this ring and you like the way it looks, go take a look in a few other stores (while i am sure cut will not have been the topmost priority in any of them) and see what you think.

I think in general, only we diamond crazies here can really tell the difference, unless it is an absolutely really bad stone.

Congrats on the decision to propose~!!

I hate to admit that my brother purchased his engagement ring from Costco, even though I advised he not do so. The reality was that he got a nice ring. The stone seemed well cut, set in platinum and represented a pretty amazing value. What was really surprising was that 6 months later, the engagement was broken and Costco took the ring back, no quesitons asked and they gave him a 100% refund. It is possible to get a good deal there, but if you do purchase something from them, it would be a very wise move to have your purchase independently evaluated by a reputable appraiser (you can find them through PS). If the ring doesn't fair well from the appraisal, you can return the ring and get your money back.

Still, I would personally not buy my ring from Costco. I guress I'm a snob, and I couldn't bring myself to spend that much money in a store that sells 16 rolls of paper towels and televisions/cd players right next to the jewelry counter.........LOL. Plus they don't provide enough data on their stones to make me comfortable with my purchase. But, I spend too much time on Pricescope and I know a little more than the average consumer.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

It looks pretty and a nice price too. Costco has a great return policy so you can really spend some time checking it out in different lighting situations. Their rings always come in size 7 so you may need to get it resized. I know that the larger solitaires come with GIA or AGS certs as well as an IGI appraisal. Ask if your ring comes with an appraisal. Good luck with your hunt!

Thanks to all for your advice and comments .... I haven''t seen the ring in person yet. But I only have a $2000 budget for a ring. In my searches online this is the one i like the most. I have no clue about the cut and grade of a diamond. So any help would be great. My girlfriend isn''t picky at all but i would like to get her the best ring for the money.

So if anyone knows where I can get a nice ring for $2000 please let me know!

Thanks

well, a half carat princess isn't going to cost more than about 1000, so that's 1000 left to spend on a really nice setting.

OR you can go for a .7 stone for about 2000 and put it in a simple setting.

So, when the setting is going to be a significant part of the budget, I kinda figure choose the setting first, stone second.

This is the closest I can find to the Costco ring http://www.bluenile.com/product_details.asp?oid=5846&page=2&show_all_pages=0&col=2&row=3&pos=8&set_shape=

And some other places to look at settings:

half, I agree with Julie''s second suggestion. If it were me, I would get the biggest, best cut stone I could and put it in a simple inexpensive setting. Then save for a year or two, or however long it takes to buy your girl her dream setting. She would have lots of time to decide what she wanted while you are saving. And she''ll end up with exactly what she wants.

Just a thought.

Honestly, I would get a vintage ring or a colored gemstone ring-- but that''s me. If you want a diamond three stone though... I''d totally be okay with costco for your budget. Their return policy is so good, I''d take a chance on it, buy it check it out and get it appraised. If it doesn''t blow you away... no harm no foul.
