Hi everyone,
I''m thinking of buying the following:

1.27 ct round, GIA cert
Measurements: 7.03 x 7.06 x 4.25
Color: F
Clarity: VS1
Depth: 60.3%
Table: 55%
Girdle: Thin to medium, faceted
Culet: None
Polish: EX
Symmetry: EX
Fluorescence: None
Crown: 34.7 ''
Pavil: 40.5 ''

HCA: 0.1

On average, what should I expect to pay for it? And how reliable is the HCA rating? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Melanie

I got HCA 0.3 on it. Actually, this is probably the lowest score on an actual diamond I know of. Very ideal

Price... I would consider anything below 10k a blessing for this one.

For your stone the HCA should work quite well, given the excellent symmetry and the thin-medium girdle - both of which are assumed by the HCA as such. The symmetry insures that there is little variance among the measurements which have been averaged out to produce the numbers on the cert...

However, the HCA does not take into consideration some aspects of the cut (such as minor facets proportions) which can have quite a bit of impact on the actual light return. The safest test on light return would be some direct diagnostic of the stone, such as the Ideal Scope or Brilliance Scope does.

There was a theoretical argument around here concluding that HCA's best is around 1: so that smaller scores are not always better. I would call this issue minor, but thought I would mention just in case.

This is just about the most pessimistic report about this stone. As far as I know, the chance that some aspect of the cut not aparent in the numbers available would make this stone worse than most top H&As is not significant.

You're right, Valeria. It was 0.3. Don't know where I got the 0.1 from. And thank you so much for the info. As far as price, I was quoted $9864. But I was getting worried. I went to this site, www.diamondcuttersintl.com, and was told that a fair price for it would be $7,524.75. Haven't found anything near that price yet for a stone of similar specs.

Fred, that site owner is up to his usual tricks. Ask if he can provide a stone w/ such specs for the 7500.00. My bet, he can't and will bait & switch.

Everyone's stones, stave his, are either overpriced, warped or both.

DCI is notorious for under-valuing all but their own stones.

They did the same for my 1A princess stone.

Not being afraid of confrontation, I called them up & told them that "J" is my ideal-colored stone & if they had a 2.55 ct 1A cut for the $7900 they suggested it's worth, that I'd buy it from them right then & there.

They actually had the nerve to tell me that NO "J" colored stones are well-cut - as tho the cutter would be wasting *his* time on a J-colored rough!!

Amusingly enuff, the next day in the mail I got an autographed copy of his book- and i do mean "amusing"ly!

Thank you, everyone, for your comments. I didn't know that about DCI. The major price difference had me worried there for a moment. But all of you have been so helpful.

Thank you again,
Melanie

I would be worried also on big price diff. You generally get what you pay for.
