Hey Everyone,

I am a new user and this is my first post. I've found PriceScope to be extremely helpful, kind, and credible so I'm hopeful you all will be able to help me.

I found the below radiant cut and it seems like a great deal based on the research I've done. However, I want to know what all you experts think. I would be purchasing from an online retailer but saw multiple pictures of the diamond in natural light.

I'd like to get as close to 1.5 carats as possible but I'm picky with the color (really want a D, E, or F). This might be it.

My ring size is 7.0 - 7.5 (but I'm losing weight pretty fast)

Price: TBD
Lab: GIA (below info is from the GIA report, which I've seen)
Carat 1.4
Shape: Square Radiant - "Cut-cornered rectangular modified brilliant"
Color F
Clarity VS1
Depth 69.3%
Table 67%
LW 1.18 (6.94 x 5.84 x 4.05 mm)
Girdle: Med to Thick
Polish Good
Sym. Good
Cutlet None
Cut: I believe it's Excellent based on the above specs, but the GIA does not list it

Does this all look I should go for it?

I absolutely LOVE how it looks in the pictures -- shown in natural light in the setting on a model's hand -- but obviously I would buy it sight unseen. I am thinking to at the very least have immediately independently appraised to ensure the GIA report matches the diamond.

The retailer states they have an in-house GIA-certified gemologist but my only concern is the conflict of interest since they want to sell me the diamond.

Please let me know your advice and what you think it would roughly be valued at so I can see if I'm getting a fair price.

Thank you all!

Do you have a picture?

Hi Neil,

Thanks for your reply.

Here is a link to the ring -- looks to be an individua seller

http://www.idonowidont.com/diamonds/platinum-140-center-stone-fvs1-gia-certified

(I am still uncertain about IDNID given their in-house appraisal and lack of money-back guarantee. My boyfriend and I may just spend the extra $$$ to ensure peace of mind but I was hoping to be able to go up in carat and quality my finding a deal).

Thanks again.

Kat

Are you set on a radiant? I think a similar look could be created for your budget from a vendor you're more comfortable purchasing from. Seems like a nice ring I just know with those cuts I'd want to see it in person with n aability to return it for a full refund if I wanted. Those cuts can sometimes be dead.

Hi Neil,

Great reply and I agree. Numbers are helpful but like you said I can't feel certain unless I can see it in person. Thank you for searching through James Allen.

So it turns out the ring was just sold. No big deal. I'm skeptical of IDNID since their "independent" appraiser has almost paper trail and could not provide credible references (Jacob & Co was one without a name or phone number -- which I highly doubt given that jeweler's high profile). I worry that IDNID "confirms" the GIA report only to swap the diamond for one of lower quality/cut/color if they notice the buyer is getting a major price reduction for value and my only recourse would be to sue for fraud and even then that's a stretch.

I am not set on radiant. My preferences are emerald, radiant, or princess all along 1.4-1.7 carat (very, very happy with .1.5) with a colorless grade and at least a VS2.

After doing internet research on emeralds, it seems that the cut tends to show easily show imperfections -- even more so as the carat size surpasses the 1.0 mark and the color grade increases.

I absolutely do not like a yellow tinge but I LOVE the fluorescence (blue). Too bad these seem hard to find. I just want the diamond to totally sparkle and be eye-catching (who doesn't lol).

Here is what I prefer for radiant and emerald.

Budget (sans band -- I just want a plain one to show off the diamond) is around 8k to 10k.
So far with these specs I seem to hit between 13k and 15k for 1.5 and 16k-18k for 1.7+.

I could do 13-15k but it may take 6 months to a 1 years to save and my boyfriend and I would like to get engaged in the next few months. Who knows though -- maybe it's truly worth waiting?

Carat 1.4 to 1.7
Cut: Excellent
Shape: Square Radiant - Cut-cornered rectangular modified brilliant
Color F - D
Clarity VS1 - VVS2
Depth 61% - 69%
Table 61% - 67%
LW 1.15 to 1.25 (Flexible)
Girdle: Slightly Thin to Slightly Thick
Polish Good - Excellent
Sym. Good - Excellent
Cutlet None - Very Small
Fluorescence: Medium to Very Strong (if possible)

Carat: 1.5 to 1.7
Cut: Very Good to Excellent
Shape: Emerald
Color: F - D
Clarity: VS1 - VVS1
Depth: 60%-69%
Table 59%-68%
L/W Ratio: 1.35 to 1.45
Girdle: Thin to Slightly Thick
Symmetry: Very Good to Excellent
Crown angle: 32 to 36 degrees
Polish: Very Good to Excellent
Cutlet: None to Small
Fluorescence: Medium to Very Strong (if possible)

However, the emerald you listed above does not seem to emit yellow too badly and the VVS1 & carat size are interesting. My ring size is 7.5 so I feel that 1.5 to 2.0 will look best -- not to big but does not look on the small side (obviously. this is a very personal and subjective perception).

Questions:

1.) Would you recommend going lower in color and higher in clarity for emeralds or even regardless of shape?

2.) Do you think the James Allen lighting is misleading -- as in the G, H, and I colors will emit a much more noticeable yellow color than in natural lighting?

3.) Do my researched specs look good to you?

Thanks so much! Really appreciate your time.

I have bought stones from JA and I find there lighting appropriate and truthful for stones with a yellow tint, they actually seem to be more harsh for stones with brownish tints.

Personally I am too impatient to wait a year for a stone. If I know I can afford a stone, I want is ASAP Haha.

I think a good compromise for you might be buy a plain solitaire setting for it now, leaving most your budget for the stone, then if you want in a year you can reset it.

I think an I still won't show tint, but if you have seen GIA I in person?

I don't think you need to stay above an f you are paying a lot for that. An h is still not going to show a tint.

I would get a hold of good old gold. Tell them your requirements in size and ratio. Tell them you want it eye clean and above whatever color you are comfortable. They are great at finding emeralds.

I would pick those sense they are more classic to my mind and have IMHO more attractive flashes

I apologize if there are typing errors I'm on my phone.

Thank you for the quick reply!! I will contact them :)

I went ring shopping a few years ago but was uneducated on diamonds the time and don't recall any of the specs -- oops.

Are you suggesting to downgrade the color from a F to an H in order to maintain carat and clarity? Will that color downgrade -- and I use that term lightly -- create a workable budget for a great 1.5-1.7 emerald?

This is the look I am going for in terms of size to finger ratio:

Also see attached pictures

My favorite is the second one (though these are both from the same ring and individual). I am not sure on these spes -- the pics are from WeddingBee and while I believe she listed the specs I can't find her post.

I looked at James Allen and they had vvs-vs H-I color stones at 1.5ct at about 9000-9800. Leaving you enough for a nice simple solitaire or maybe even pave setting.

I'd ask GOG to fi d H and I color, I'm sure an h could be found, but he might be able to Find a really high I that's great for you too, so I'd probably have him find some of each, then make you a video to see how comfortable you are with the color difference.

I don't think going to an H or even I would be settling, it should still be lovely. And you get that size :naughty:

Great advice!!

Much appreciated!
