Hello everyone.

I actually registered on the site so as to post & get expert advice on whether my diamond is a 'dead' one! It's driving me bit insane since my DH offered it to me as a surprise 5-year marriage gift. I don't want to offend his feelings especially since he bought it himself. However since he's not into gemstones etc, I feel he was not positioned to make the wisest purchase here.

It's a 1 carat diamond, G colour, SI clarity that he purchased for $3000, without certification & no details of the diamond other than a shop-card (which is why he was told he's getting a real price deal!). I will not mention names of country, shop etc to be completely anonymous.

My issue with the diamond is that I feel at times under certain lighting (shade) it has a very dark centre. On 2 areas of the rim/under the girdle there are very visible black horizontal thin streaks. Could they be blocking the light into the diamond, thus making centre darker?? Or is it to do with poor cut?? Am I bring too fussy & creating a mountain out of a molehill here, & should just enjoy the lovely gift??

Thank you for all ur help on this!! Will be attaching pictures.

I'd say without a certificate the stone is way more included, a worse colour than they told you or your husband and probably a terrible cut. All of these issues will contribute to poor light performance. If you are within a return period then take it back and get a fully certified stone so you know EXACTLY what you are buying and that you are getting what you pay for.

Thanks arkieb1 this is how I feel too after my research! The problem is that the shop only sells stones without certification & where we are settled, it's not unusual & kind of the norm. The shop has an exchange policy, but no return! (Obviously!). I've no real choice than 'adjusting' to its flaws I guess :(

You could go back into the shop and look at what they do have and see if any of the other stones look like they preform better.
Look at new stones in all different lighting situations (and in the shade of course). Compare your stone side by side with a new stone
to see if there are other more sparkly stones. Its a lot of work but I hate to see you have to live with a stone that doesnt do
what you want it to do. Good luck...

Or go back and specifically ask them to get you in a GIA certified stone. Otherwise if they will not do this then, I agree go in and look at all their stones in your price range, in different lighting situations and see if you can find one that you can be happy with.

Thank you yes I really can't see myself totally happy with this diamond even though I'm trying to be!! Hard to confess, but I have a 0.25 engagement diamond ring that I love more than this one which we bought when we were still students in South Africa & it's superb. I am still deliberating but will certainly visit the shop to see my options. I attach a zoomed in pic of the 1 carat ring, you guys will know better how to assess it...

No jeweler on earth would sell a correctly graded 1ct G SI stone for $3k.
