Need Expert Opinion on this Diamond!

Can someone please tell me how this diamond will fair in terms of fire/white light? I feel like reading diamonds is another language!

I want a diamond with a lot of fire and brilliance. How much is too much to pay for this?

I wouldn't buy that one. The HCA gives it a 3.6 and we prefer stones that score 2.0 and under.

You want Excellent on most of these but spread is usually very good on ideal cut stones. I definitely would not go less than very good on any of the other areas. This one has a problem with the pavilion angle.

Here's something to help you choose stones that will usually fall in the ideal cut range:

crown angle: 34-35

pavilion angle: 40.6-41.0

girdle: thin, medium, slightly thick

The HCA is a quick and dirty tool to weed out diamonds that may be cut too deep, too shallow, etc. But the HCA does not have eyes, and the numbers on the GIA report are rounded numbers representing the diamond's proportions. So I would not rule that diamond out simply based on the GIA numbers and the HCA report if -- and only if -- you can buy the diamond, inspect it in person and then return it if it is not to your liking. If you are buying this diamond without a return period, there are "safer" choices. But this diamond may be worth a look in person. I wouldn't rule it out just yet. ETA: I especially wouldn't rule it out if the price is right, because that's a hard-to-find color, carat weight, and clarity combination.

I second Lula. I have a diamond with the same PA and an HCA score of 4.4, and it is a beautiful stone, full of fire and sparkle. I am planning on trading up my diamond to a slightly larger one one with ideal specs yet I wonder if I will be able to tell the difference visually. If you could find a truly ideal stone in the same price range, then I would choose that one of course. But if the diamond you are considering is a great price, then it might be worth buying. Could you view this stone in person and compare it with one with ideal proportions?

Hellooo everyone and thank you all SO much for responding to my post!! The price for the diamond is what I think would be fairly reasonable so I am considering meeting the jeweler next week to see the stone in person in spite of the HCA score (as suggested, thanks!). I have done some research online and read that that score measures only the average of 17 of the 58 facets that comprise the round brilliant shape and does not factor in the alignment of the facets that are responsible for maximizing light performance.

On Good Old Gold's site they also mention that
"Our independent research has determined that with a 35 degree crown angle, leakage is not visible to human perception until the pavilion angles reach 41.4 degrees (November 06)."

This one has a pavilion angle of 41.2 so I definitely think I will try to check it out in person. Should I ask the jeweler if I could compare this to a stone with a lower HCA? Will the jeweler know what I am talking about?

probably not. however, I think checking it out in person is wise. Make sure to look at it in different lighting environments (if possible). you can also put the stone on your fingers and check to see if you can see your skin 'through' the diamond.
Anyway with the 80% LGF this one may be totally fine. Bottom line is, look at it, compare it to other diamonds, take it in different lighting...it is GIA Ex so not a 'bad' stone!
