Hi All,

First timer here, I am buying an engagement ring for my girlfriend, and i educated myself to the whole process went through everything, but at the last minute the diamond has changed.

basically what i am getting now (on a white gold band) is as follows:

GIA cert.
1.21 carat
Ideal Cut
VS2 clarity
J color

i originally wanted an I as i read that was the lowest that was colorless to the naked eye. do you think a J color diamond would look as good? i know the cut matters and it is Ideal with the hearts and arrows. any opinions would be appreciated.

thanks.

I have seen many J''s that are ideal cut and that face up very white. It''s all a matter of personal preference, some people are more color sensitive than others. Good luck and welcome to PS!!!

Is your girlfriend really into diamonds? Color-sensitive? My engagement ring will be my first diamond, and when I was shown a J stone (early on in the "hunting" phase), it looked just as white to me in person as any of the others. It was beautiful, and I don't think it was an ideal cut, either. The color is so barely noticeable to the average person, I think it'll be perfect. Plus, with a lower color, you can get her the bigger rock!

Providing it''s a well-cut stone, most folks would perceive a J as facing up without warmth. You may see a SLIIIIIGHT bit of warmth from the side, but again, faces up beautifully!

this is all reassuring, and appreciated.

i will be seeing it on saturday, and was a bit worried. i know having an ideal cut will make a nice difference, but was worried about the J.

thanks.

if this is a older GIA paper, ask the vendor for a sarin report (a 3-D sarin would be great).the report would give you a better idea of the cut quality.

Agreed. If you haven''t seen a lot of well cut stones outside of jewelry store lights, you should probably do two things. Read up here to get smart about what "ideal cut" means. Until recently, it was a very wide range of cuts, which resulted in some being better than others, and it is still not black and white. More details about the cut(crown and pavilion angles) will let the experts give out their opinions. Also, you should try to view various well cut colors in person to see the difference for yourself. As a novice, they often all look beautiful. Bul, this is a long term ring, and you want it to look good long term, even as you and/or she get more experienced with diamonds. J colored stones can be beautiful, and many many people are very happy with them. But, some color sensitive people aren''t, so some personal judgement helps here, rather than just unseeing opinions. J is one of those colors itis better to see for yourself.

Good luck. Ask more questions once you get the cut details...
