My local jeweler got in 5 diamonds for me to choose from for my new ring, all RB, and all of them looked very nice. They were all GIA rated, but only one of them was rated for cut (others certs were 2005). The one that was rated was Very Good.

Out of these, one stone (not cut rated) stood out as being brilliant as a headlight, and I thought that fire wise, it also ranked up there. He was nice enough to even let me take it for a "test drive" home for the weekend.

What concerns me are the paper stats:

Measurements 7.81-7.93 x 4.78
Weight 1.75 carat
Depth 60.7 %
Table 58 %
Clarity SI1
Color F
Polish Ex
Symmetry VG
Fluorescence Faint

Comments: Crown angles are less than 30 degrees.

By the way, I thought it was a good F, whiter than the others, and a good SI1.

Can the narrow crown angles have been compensated for? I really thought the stone had plenty of fire, but of course, this was the only one I got to take for a home visit; I couldn''t really ask the jeweler to hand over 80K of diamonds for me to play with! In the store lighting and outside the store, on the sidewalk, it held its own against the others fire-wise.

He set aside that stone and is getting in a few more stones next week,so I want to settle this matter in my mind before then, and be a little more educated before I make a choice that has to last me the rest of my life!

Could you ask the jeweller to run a Sarin report on that crown angle to see exactly what the measurement is? In some instances a shallow crown can be prone to chipping - not saying that is the case, but to check it out, maybe one of our experts can chime in here. This diamond is out of round too looking at the diameter measurements. If you love it then that is all that matters, but I would check out that crown and maybe get an independant appraisal while you can return it to check for durability issues. The shallow crown can be compensated with a steeper pavillion angle which can help performance which might be the case with this one. See if you can get that Sarin Report. Personally I would prefer a diamond with tighter specs than we have seen with this one, I wouldn't commit until you have seen what else he can bring in, you will be wearing this rock a long time so don't settle! Cut is the most important ingredient for a beautiful diamond, base your search on that along with your colour and clarity requirements which are good and you will have a beautiful rock at the end of it!

I was also puzzled by the out of round issue. Doesn''t that factor into symmetry which was still rated VG? Certainly it was round to the eye.

I guess I am mainly worried about looks..will I suddenly, down the line, feel this diamond isn''t performing well, even though now it looks wonderful to me. Chipping isn''t a big concern, because I am very gentle with jewlery and don''t wear rings when doing any manual type activity.

I think if you have any doubts, don''t rush into it and wait and see what else the jeweller comes up with - you might then see this one is fine and you love it.
