Hello,
I''m thinking of upgrading the stone in my e-ring, but I don''t wish to change the setting, as I am sentimental enough to want to keep my original ring.
Actually, i''ve been wearing it everyday for nearly 40 years, regardless of the work I''m doing, so if it appears a little battered in my pics please make allowances.
I''ve been told by a local jeweller that my current stone is a diamond, but only .06cts but the setting should be able to hold a stone upto .5cts.
To take the larger stone, it would be neccessary to remove the top part of the setting, resize it and then replace it.
The top is platinum and I was wondering if anyone here has had work like this done and if so were they happy with the results.
I would also like to know if would affect the strength of the ring because I will still probably wear it everyday.
I have "hopefully" attached some pictures.

Thanks

Hi. If you are sentimental, do you think it would be better to just get a whole new ring and leave the one you currently have as is? Your setting might become damaged when the larger stone is set into it. If I were you, I would just get a whole new ring. That''s what I did. I received a new e-ring from my husband and kept the old one because I didn''t want to alter/ or give it up.
Let us know what you decide.

Rainbow, first off welcome!

If I were you I would consult with a local jeweler on whether or not what you would like done is possible, and ask them how it would affect the durability of the ring. They can answer your question better upon physically examining the ring. Then depending upon what they tell you, you can proceed with your stone upgrade. Or if they say it isn''t possible, then what about getting a new engagement ring, and resizing your current ring and wearing it as a right hand ring?

Hello Christine, I''ve tried the idea of a new e-ring for our 25th wedding anniversary and it just sits in it''s box.
I''m afraid I can''t get past the idea that this is my e-ring and anything else is just an ordinary ring.

The top of my e-ring has a lot of metal in it as though it was "filled in" to accept the small stone, you can see this best in the last pic.
I''m hoping this can be cleaned out to accommodate a larger stone, so the overall setting will be virtually unchanged.

Hello LLL,
I have taken to a jeweller, as I mentioned in my original post. He said it was possible, but the platinum could be a problem, as he wasn''t sure he could find a craftsman locally who would work with platinum. Perhaps, I should mention I live in rural Australia, so choice of jewellers etc is very limited.

Rainbow, I just had another idea...hopefully your current e-ring will be able to accommodate a larger stone..however if not, then maybe you can get a new-ring and u and hubby can renew vows with that ring...

How romantic! Then you''ll have another memory attached to your ring and then wear your current e-ring on your right hand....ok maybe it''s a stretch but I just had to throw it out there, I think 40 years of marriage is truly something to celebrate! Congratulations!

Sorry Vanessa I read the post so fast that I just skipped over that part. It seems to me that changing the head would be risky...since you have alot of memories attached to this ring, you would need to decide if you can accept the risk that it may be ruined once they attempt to fit a larger stone.

What about having a replica made of your engagement ring, in platinum or white gold, then wear your original ring on your right hand or wear the replica on your right hand. I also think it would be lovely to not change the original ring at all and leave it as it was the day you received it.

Hi Rainbow!

Your ring is known as an "illusion setting". That was a very popular style in the US in the 1940''s. My mom''s ring was an illusion set.

There are several jewelers located in Australia who post regularly here on the Forum. Maybe one of them can help you.

Johan at the Melbourne Diamond Exchange search for user name MDX.

Garry Holloway, aka Cut Nut, also in Melbourne. Award winning jeweler. Precious Metals. http://www.ideal-scope.com Search for Garry H or Cut Nut.

Platinumsmith is also located in Melbourne. He''s made some amazing pieces for several folks here on the Forum. Search for Platinumsmith or visit his website at www.platinumsmith.com.au

Hopefully someone can help you get the upgrade your heart desires.

Hello pqcollectibles,

Thanks for the info on "illusion" settings. This ring was bought in the 60''s in London.

The names of the Australian jewellers is also very helpful.

I''ve been in touch with Platinumsmith and it sounds like he might be able to help me.
