Current info on my e-ring as it is now:

1.1 carat Round
6-prong
basket setting
2 small vertical baguettes on either side
small round diamonds flanking all sides
beaded filigree

My dilemma is that I really want 4 claw prongs instead of the classic 6 prong. When I took it in for its first cleaning, the jeweler told me he wanted to see how I treated my ring over a few months and then we could discuss doing the 4- double prongs. I completely understand this and it has been okay by me.

I am taking my ring in this week and I am going to request the double claw prong but i am curious........

do you think there will be much of a difference between a 6 and 4 prong??

The ring is gorgeous as is....my stone looks impeccable. I just wonder if I should leave well enough alone.

So basically, what will going from a 6 to a 4 prong do for my ring?

It won''t really do anything. It''s just personal preference which you like. I prefer very delicate tiny prong tips so you only see the stone no matter how many prongs there are. Whether they could make the claw prongs to suit you would be another issue. Leon Mege is the master of claw prongs, so you might even consider having a new ring made.

Thanks for the response.

i think i will have a new e-ring made. great idea.

The number of prongs used tend to create an optical illusion of sorts that you might want to consider, the presence of six prongs set evenly around a round brilliant cut diamond has the tendency to maintain the round appearance of the diamond and increase the perception of the outside diameter of the diamond by drawing the eye of the observer out to the edge of the prong perimeter. Four prongs set evenly around a round brilliant cut diamond has a tendency to draw attention out to the four corners created by the prongs which gives the diamond a more square appearance. It really is a matter of personal preference, I would ask your local jeweler to show you two diamonds of the same size in a four and a six prong setting to determine which look appeals to you.

Off topic: The subject line "need advice on possibly changing head" immediately tossed my brain over to the radio advertisement for Geico Insurance where the Gecko walked under a car in an automobile repair shop and is trying to sell the mechanic car insurance... The mechanic asks the Gecko to pass him the Phillips head (screwdriver) and the Gecko''s says "Hand you Phillips head? Why would you want Phillips head? What did Phillip ever do to you?" Love it.
