Hi All,
I am in need of advice on an Emerald cut diamond. It's GIA graded, no ASET or Idealscope photos
and it's pre-loved.
I am attaching the certificate and diamond photos. Buy or not to buy....that is the question
Any and all advice is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
Hi Sphene,
I thought that too, I'll request for the seller to "clean"the ring and take more photos.....hopefully, they won't mind.
Thanks for your feedback.
Since you won't be able to get an ASET it's hard to tell you anything. Perhaps ask for some photos in different lighting as well, especially since it's a K colour. Also ask for some profile shots.
My project is very different than yours, as I've already been down the ER path. My search is for a much smaller stone, and intended to go into a pendant for my wife. The more I look at EC's though the more my eye is drawn to very clean (VS1 or better) and very white (G or better) stones. Fancy cuts tend to show more colour than rounds. My wife has a 3ct J round, so this stone will be very different.
Good luck, as far as I know that seller has a good reputation.
The only negative that immediately comes to mind is the 71 table. That is pretty huge meaning there is less of a crown. So it's mostly a big flat surface on top. I really prefer tables under 62, but I would look at up to maybe 65 for others.
Oh, and I would want at least very good for polish and symmetry. I think this just isn't the best cut stone.
Have you seen K color EC's in person and are fine with that color? Those pictures are not accurately showing the color.
I am grateful for your advice! I was secretly (not so secretly now) hoping that you would grace me with your wisdom.
[Oh, and I would want at least very good for polish and symmetry. I think this just isn't the best cut stone.]
Maybe that's why the diamond looked a tad bit dirty, it was only graded with a "Good" polish and "Good" symmetry.
I have not seen K color Emerald cuts in person, just on Pricescope. I better go to the mall and check for reference. My DH always
liked the shape and I've recently began to LOVE ECs especially after seeing "mimi72" Emerald cut with French cut side stones and "Rubies R Me" 7ct honker!
How ironic.....while typing this, I looped back to my email to check if the vendor replied........they did, to inform me that the ring
was "SOLD"!
I thought that EC was the one for me prior to posting in Rocky Talk.
Oh well, back to searching. And again, thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Aww, thank you! I am happy to help when I can! I absolutely love emerald cuts and am sort of looking for one myself. I should wait, but I am just keeping my eyes open! I find them very hard to buy because most are not well cut. It is really good to be able to buy one with an ASET image, but that is next to impossible on the secondary market. But a well cut one is a gorgeous diamond, so it pays to be patient!
Just to say a little more about color, I will share what I have seen. A few years ago I saw a PS member's beautiful I color EC. It looked very white and I thought at that time, I could do I color in an EC. Last summer I had the opportunity to try on a couple of huge EC's.The larger one was 11 cts and L color and the other was K color and 8 cts. I decided that J would be the lowest I would consider, and of course, it would be smaller than these!!!
Here are some pics. I am going to show one shot where the K looks totally white, and it proves why you cannot just go by one picture to judge diamond color. These are all of the K color stone. The middle one is on my friend's hand. You can see the contrast of the side stones in the setting and the center stone. This diamond likely would look less tinted in natural outdoor lighting, but it is also good to see them in other lighting.
I should add, though, that if a lower color stone is a very pretty color and has white diamond side stones, it can look very pretty, too. I wouldn't rule that out for a RHR.
*I don't know how to copy your comments in highlighted yellow and outlined
I can't wait to see your EC when the time comes, I'm pretty certain it will perfect. I've read in Rocky Talk forums that some of
the ladies have been searching for years for the right diamond.
Oooooooooh, I would love to try on gargantuan ECs. I want a big EC diamond, and I'll admit, I got caught up in the size and VVS clarity of that diamond.
Thanks for sharing photos of the K color. Your friend's ring is gorgeous. I now can see the color contrast and have a better idea on color.
Well, I am off on my quest again.
Thank you for sharing, I know that it's time consuming to type, add photos, and advise/educate others (like me).
Diamondseeker2006, I greatly appreciate the time you've invested to help me.
I cannot tell you how many times I have surprised myself with not knowing the color of emerald cut diamonds--I have been fooled by more than a few K's, thinking they were graded a lot higher color than they were! Age and infirmity?
In a perfect world we would have every diamond to view IRL. So that begs the question, how many I, J or K colored EC's have you seen IRL to be able to made a decision whether a K (viewed online) would suit you? (In general, fancies and step cuts are diamonds that fall outside the usual PS "cheat sheet" otherwise used for MRB's" and therefore should be viewed IRL since what I like...you may not.
Thanks for your comments, I learn a bit more each time when someone responds.
To be honest, I haven't seen an I or lower color stone in person..... how would I know if I'd be happy with the K color? Size.
I got caught up in size and the VVS clarity, and.....I thought I would be fine with a warm color diamond.
I think I need to visit diamonds IRL so I can have a better idea on color.
A well cut diamond will face up whiter than its stated colour. A poorly cut diamond will face up warmer. So note this as you are shopping around - look at the diamond both from the side AND the top to decide where your tolerance lies.
