Was hoping to get some expert advice on the cut of a diamond I am planning to buy. Here are the particulars:

32.5 angle
41.0 angle
61% table
59.7% depth

It scores a 1.7 on the Cut Advisor. However, I have never seen a diamond with a table larger than the depth before, and am concerned. Could someone please chime in with their thoughts?

Other details, it is GIA certified:

Carat: 1.20
Color: G
Clarity: VS2
Cut: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None

I'd be very grateful for any insight folks many have. Thanks!

when I started researching diamonds, I was also very confused by that "table is larger than depth" thing... then I realized that they really don't measure the same thing at all... it happens that the table usually increases as the depth decreases, but they also aren't TRULY a 1-to-1 correlation like that so don't be thrown off by it

I purchased a diamond this week with very similar stats... same angles, just 59.3 depth and 60% table... as you can see, lower depth for me and also lower table, so that relation doesn't hold true...

I've researched these 60/60 diamonds for quite a bit... the 32.5 crown seems to be a good compliment to 41 pavilion. 33 seems to be ideal to 41, but hey, close enough I guess?

my diamond knowledge isn't massive, so I'm going purely off HCA and AGS charts... 61 might probably be pushing it with table size... as far as I remember, that's the last table size that scores ideal on AGS cut with any sort of consistency... 62 has just a few combinations that score it ideal, and 63, best you can get is excellent...

61 is definitely the highest I think you should go because what if it's rounded down? I think ideally, you should stick to 60 and below but more knowledgeable members might correct me on this one

all in all, if you can keep that diamond on hold, mine is arriving on Saturday and I'm more than glad to share some pics of it... should be very close to yours, just I color...

It's a wonky 60/60 style. Do not buy without an idealscope. It's too risky. If the vendor doesn't have an idealscope image available, pass on it and we can help you find a different one.

What is your budget?

@ebadevil - Thanks for posting the AGS chart. According to that chart, it is in the Ideal range for a 61 table, which is comforting. It's also marked as Ideal on the GIA cert. Would LOVE to hear your thoughts / see pics when yours arrives.

@gypsy - no idealscope images, I'm afraid. Is there a way I can private message you with some details?

Thanks!

My diamond that I recently purchased have very similar specs, and it is GORGEOUS. However, make sure you get an idealscope image so you can check on light return-- Gypsy knows what she's talking about!

Here were my diamond's specs, HCA was 1.4

depth: 59.2
table: 60
Pavilion angle: 41
Crown angle: 32.5

It's seriously a stunning diamond, but I did make sure to check idealscope and ASET images before pulling the trigger. You may have found a good one with nice cost savings, assuming images look good.

Note of caution - You should not use this chart, as it gives details about 2D in a 3D world.

This chart is based on the old AGS system, before they had the AGS000 Platinum that we talk about today when we talk about AGS Ideal.

Quoting an old comment from John Pollard, when examining a similar situation:
"It would appear to be 'Ideal' in the Gold metric, based on estimates of minor-facet choices and consistency from the hand-shots. But there is no way to know if it would be 'ideal' in the 3D Platinum (light performance) metric without sending it in or running it through the AGS PGS."

You can read the full thread here, if you want to know more about why this table shouldn't be used to draw any meaningful conclusions:
