I am looking to upgrade both engagement ring and wedding band for a completely different set but am just starting out and need advice. I found a beautiful Leo diamond from a local mall jeweler and would be very happy with this purchase but should probably look around and make sure I'm not paying too much. This Leo diamond is a 1 carat center diamond with 2 side diamonds making it 2 carats total weight with white gold. Clarity is SI1-Sl2. We bought my current diamond set at this jewelers 20 years ago so they tell me they will give me a trade in of 150% of what I paid for it. Long story short, they will give me $2500 off so I pay $5800 for the diamond engagement ring after trade in. Today I went to a big city Jewelers building and told them I wanted a second opinion to see what they could offer me. Well, after poo-pooing the mall jeweler stating they don't' compete with jewelers like that, he offered me only $500 for both of my rings but told me he could make me a similar one for easily $500 less than what the mall jeweler quoted PLUS I would keep both of my current rings (he said it's not worth putting it towards the new rings). I really don't have much more info than that, but was feeling good about the Leo diamond and just wanted to make sure I wasn't being overly priced. Now I'm not sure if a Jewelers building ("largest supplier in the region, in business for X number years, etc") would bring anything more to the table. Suggestions? Thanks!

Um, some one is selling a Leo threestone ring on the PreLoved Forum- its under "pricescope cage". It says something like 1.48 cttw three stone

I think Amy's bling meant to type Pricescope caFe! Took me a few seconds of trying to picture the Pricescope caGe before realizing her fingers or her autocomplete had played a trick on her. (I did have visions of a tiny cage with bling confined within!)

Good price on the ring she mentions, although it's not quite the carat weight you're looking at, but it costs a lot less than you're being quoted.

hahaha- yes stupid IPhone autocorrect! lol. The ring I am talking about is smaller than you are looking but it also has an asking price of 2,199 OBO.

Yes, do look at the Leo ring above.

But if that is not what you want, then don't buy the new one unless they will give you the grading reports on the diamonds and post them here. We can then see if they are overcharging or not. I hope they have GIA reports.

Many of us came here for the same reason you did. I learned a ton and ended up buying my new ring from a jeweler I found out about here. Then went on to buy diamond stud earrings, etc. with another! I am all for giving local jewelers the business if the diamonds are excellent quality and the price isn't greatly higher than we can find with vendors here. But we have to see the diamond reports to even to begin helping you with pricing.
