A GIA certified 1.37ct D color IF Oval diamond. Which is remarkably beautiful. Jeweler has quoted a custom engagement ring with this diamond as well as two tapered baguettes at 20-21K. I was initially looking to spend ~15-16K but this price is not undoable in the time frame I have to work with. Should I insist he find a lower clarity (I really like D color and I know she does too) diamond or go with this one? It seems like a great value and it would mean a lot to me personally to know I got the best thing I could afford for her. I know features like clarity of this grade go unnoticed to the naked eye. Is it worth it?

Do you have a copy of the GIA cert or dimensions of the diamond (table, depth, crown, pavilion) ?

Not sure how to upload a document here so I copied the information from the GIA cert:

Oval Brilliant
Dimensions: 8.75, 5.71, 3.97
Color Grade: D
Clarity grade: Internally Flawless

Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: none

Table: 54%
Depth: 69.4%
Girdle very-thin to very thick (faceted)
very small cutlet

In case anyone is following this thread I've arranged for the jeweler to show me more stones of varying clarities that make more sense price wise.

I would definitely look at VS1 and VS2, but I would also strongly recommend looking at E and F color as well. They are all colorless and will be VERY white. I would rather meet budget #1, or in any case, get a larger diamond than ever paying for D IF. To the vast majority of people, E-F VS is going to look exactly the same.

'Is it worth it' is a question others can only partially answer. How you feel about having the highest color and clarity is a part of that equation that only you can gauge. Having said that, a few things to consider with this stone. 1) The cut quality is not commensurate with elite color and clarity. 2) you can get into your intended budget range by relaxing on color and clarity just a little bit 3) From a strictly value/resale standpoint the D IF in an oval won't benefit you as much as a more balanced mix of quality factors.

It's a good idea to look at some other stones. If you still come back to the D IF you will know it's the one.

It is not too deep and a small culet can be beautiful. It is deeper than the average oval, but that might result in no bowtie and actually improve performance. A small culet is not disappointing if you like the look of it.

There are no ideal dimensions for ovals. It could be a stunning stone.

And the stone you posted, is clearly one you are selling. And you can't tell anything about the performance of an oval from the lab report.

And faceting and performance are what matter. Not stats on a lab report.
