Need advice on 2.21 ct pear

I''m working on finding my "dream ring" with all the elements I love together in one. I think I''m headed towards a pear center in a pave band with a matching wedding band on each side. A local jeweler has a 2.21 ct pear solitaire in a platinum head on a yellow gold band. It''s on consignment for a friend of his who he says really needs to sell.

Questions.... Is $14,500 inc. tax a good price for this diamond and head? I did my best to figure out the cut grade according to the AGA chart for pear but am still a little confused. What grade would this be? Should I expect this thing to sparkle at all? I have seen it and I just remember thinking "big" but don''t remember thinking "sparkly". Am I better off getting a premium cut 1.5 ct. pear for the same money?

Thanks for any input and I look forward to hearing any and all opinions--expert or not!

P.S. If anyone has a set that is the whole triple band pave thing I''d love for you to inspire so that I can admire!

What is "Premium cut" ?

as far as I know, there is no widely accepted (beyond one store's door, that is) cut quality standard for pears, much less one that guarantees brilliance. AGA is the only such set of guidelines I know of that do not come from a seller, and the AGA guidelines do not predict brilliance.

Well, pears are not the brightest cut, although some are better than others. You could have a pear cut diamond selected for brilliance, but that cannot be done by numbers.

Just IMO, of course.

Anyway. Why E/VS ? How about something like THIS (referring to Cflutists's pear)

Not that the price is not good news - there's hardly any better around here.

Just some rambling... since those GIA stats tell so little about what a diamond look like, there's lots of room for second guessing without having seen the piece.

The table on this pear is somewhat small, and you are paying for more weight than you see face up, with such a high depth percentage and a thick girdle.

Would that stop me from looking at it? Absolutely not!!

My pear is deeper than the cut guidelines advise and personally I think it helps to minimize appearance of any bowtie. You can crunch numbers all you want with fancy cuts, but really, you need to see them in person. You said it struck you as "big" but not "sparkly" - did you see it in natural light as well as store lighting, etc? The sparkle of a pear is going to be different than that of a rb, but it can (and should) be breathtaking and stunning just the same.

None of that would tell me as much as seeing it in person. As Ana said...without an accepted "ideal" standard for fancies...what do your eyes say?

ETA: I bought my pear before my PS days. Here's a recent photo shoot. My pear's measurements and "cut grades" are all over the board...would I buy the same stone now, after PS? You bet I would. For a rb now...I would have different selection parameters.
