Hi,

I am about to purchase a 1.34 carat, H colour, VS1 'perfect' H&A diamond for an engagement ring.

Pic of GIA report attached.

I have already viewed the diamond under an idealscope and the H&A pattern seems close to perfect, apart from a few very very minor issues (which may not even be real issues). I've attached a pic taken through an iPhone (sorry it is a bit blurry).

I would be really grateful if any experts around on this forum could give their opinion on the diamond.

Thanks a lot!

It looks very nice. Any other photos? Have you seen it in person or just in images?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your responses.

Yes, I saw the diamond today in person and it looked good.

I have been told that it is a perfect H&A and I took pictures using an iPhone through the idealscope - sorry i know the picture quality isn't that good.

I was quoted roughly £10k GBP for the stone (this includes UK VAT of 20%).

I really want to purchase a perfect H&A's diamond and was told by the seller that this stone is directly from s muller and sons in Antwerp - more info on them here, they seem to be good: http://www.muller.be/history.htm

I should add that the jewellery shop is willing to source other H&A diamonds if I don't like this one, but it looks like there is very limited choice around this carat weight and h&a cut for my budget.

It's pretty clear that it does not exhibit perfect hearts and arrows. Here's a guide on what it should look like http://beyond4cs.com/hearts-and-arrows/

Re: Need Advice: Hearts & Arrow Diamond - Specs & Pics Insid

The slight morphing is due to using my iPhone to take the pic, it looked pretty symmetrical when viewing through the idealscope but i did notice the very smallest of a cut in some of the top of the hearts, which i circled in the image i previously posted.

If there's any sort of clipping in the clefts or arrows then it's not perfect. They're telling you what they want to tell you to make a sale.

n9com. Your eyes have seen this stone both naturally and also through an IS. You are in the best position to judge if you find the stone appealing or not, and if it meets your price point. For some, perfection to the nth degree is required for peace of mind. For others, they can be equally as content knowing that their stone still performs in the top 5% of all diamonds. Also, just because it may not be a perfect example of hearts and arrows (as defined), that does not mean it will perform any worse. Its entirely possible to have a stone with a perfect hearts and arrows pattern and poor performance due to other factors.

Thanks for your replies.

I have spoken to them and they have told me they can even send the stone to HRD to get confirmation that it is perfect H&A.

They said the image taken through the phone isn't aligned properly so some parts of the pattern don't line up - this is due to the way the picture was taken, which makes sense.

Will the HRD report confirm fully that this is a perfect H&A diamond?

Re: Need Advice: Hearts & Arrow Diamond - Specs & Pics Insid

Judging from your posts here, it seems like you are really concerned with making sure someone labels this stone as perfect hearts and arrows. I don't see the problem in that, but at the same time I don't believe there is any set standard for what qualifies as perfect hearts and arrows. Is HRD an authority on determining hearts and arrows? If they call it hearts and arrows, does that mean everyone else would as well? I imagine the answer is most likely no. I think you have a great advantage to seeing the stone in person. If it looks great and you love it, I wouldn't worry about whether someone has labeled it perfect H&A. In any case, it appears to be cut with much more precision than the great majority of stones on the market.

While the angles look fine, I'd be more interested in seeing an ideal scope to verify its light return. A perfect h&a stone, like kobi said, doesn't always mean the best light performance.

If you truly want "PERFECT" H&A, get a Brian Gavin, a GOG Superior H&A or a Crafted by Infinity. Not only will they be PERFECT, you'll get the best light return and performance on top of it.

Re: Need Advice: Hearts & Arrow Diamond - Specs & Pics Insid

Honestly, for an iphone picture that's as pretty good of a hearts pattern as you'll ever need. What you need to do is not get caught up in the "H&A" terminology and look at it for yourself in different types of lighting. If you post an idealscope or ASET people can confirm if it's well-cut. However the GIA report (granted the angles are rounded) and H&A image seem to indicate it's a pretty well-cut diamond.
