Hello everyone,

I have been reading the boards for a few days now and have an internal dilemma about the type of a ring I'd like. I'm 30 with european olive/tan skin and consider myself to be a modern city girl that likes delicate designs. I have affinity for yellow gold! Not the 24k dark gold that you'd see in India or Asia but a softly colored, light yellowish, often "matte" or "hammered" look of what I'd call "modern gold". I wear simple jewellery but notice over the years that I tend to reach for my YG jewellery way more than anything silver looking. I just like how it looks warm against my skin and not like a silver piece of metal out of place.

HOWEVER, having said all that, I've had a look through numerous engagement ring photos and the ones I've seen so far look way better in platinum than in YG! I want my ring to be about the ring as a whole, not just about the stone, and I love the three sided pave setting that LM does (I've posted a picture below). My diamond will probably be different but the square looking 3-sided pave definitely made me go "whow"!!

Now, I could never pull off this look in YG, I saw some pave YG rings and didn't think they came even close to the platinum ones. So if I was to go for YG gold, it would probably have to be something very simple and elegant. That would be nice too, but for some reason I really feel that I want my whole ring to be a piece of art (i.e. a delicate and detailed setting), rather than just showcasing the rock (don't shoot at me for saying this :)

So I wonder if, wearing a platinum LG ring with the rest of YG jewellery (earrings, necklaces etc.) would make it look tacky? Or will it be ok because of how delicate and detailed it looks (i.e. it's not just chunk of metal) and it will sort of work with other intricate matte yellow gold earrings etc. I don't think I'm a ring person so this might as well be the only ring I'll wear (besides the wedding band).

Honest advice please!

The first photo is of the LM 3-sided pave ring I like.
The other 3 photos are to illustrate what style of jewellery I tend to lean towards to -- I'd categorize it as inexpensive yet cute.

i don't think that will be a problem at all. the burnished look on the type of jewelery you normally wear gives more of a modern edge, and since it is not your typical shiny yellow gold i don't think it will impact on styling. what you could do, as diamondseeker mentioned, is invest in a few two-tone pieces. or even extending from jewelry into our pieces, look at the hardware on your bags/shoes/belts. mix everything up!

First of all I love the look of that ring!
I never really thought that my ering and wedding band had to "match"my other jewelry in color, I dont know why.
My ering was set in in platinum first, the yellow gold (not sure why I switched it) and at the time it was stolen actually 2 toned.
I think the ER/WB is kind of a stand alone statement. I think now that I am leaning towards more vintage looking pieces the reset just naturally will be in platinum.

And like DS said wear a two toned watch to make it all tie in and perfection!

Have you considered getting a rose gold ring with pink diamond pave? That is one way to match with your other jewelry.

I saw a pink diamond pave halo ring at Leon's, and it was TDF!!

I believe Rachel Zoe successfully mixes. My one friend who went matte/brushed yellow gold with her wedding set, re-set to Platinum within 3 years.

Hi, Up until my reset, I had a YG wedding band and a platinum e ring for 6 years. I didn't feel there was an issue combining the two and now that my reset is done, the YG of my wedding band sort of 'warms up' the WG of the new ring! I'm happy with it... and in my case, the thinness of the band doesn't really show up much against the e ring.

Good luck!

Thank you all for your responses!
"Sweets I'd like a platinum ring, but in order for it to blend in better with the rest of my jewellery, can I also have a Rolex?" :halo: hahaha

Princessre, I love the look of light pink (more apricot-e) gold pave eternity ring but have not yet come across any non-halo pink gold rings that I liked. If you have some, please share!

Decodelighted, what were the reasons behind your friends switch from YG? Do you know of any nice modern brushed YG e-rings? I think right now I'm leaning more on the side of platinum (aka LM ring above) but I want to do proper research so that I'm not missing out on anything. I still feel that maybe somewhere out there there are some modern YG engagement ring designers that I haven't tapped into...

I love that e-ring too. You could try to combine both yellow and white on your e-ring. Maybe you could get a yellow diamond and set it in the platinum setting or you could try getting a warmer colored diamond in the platinum setting with yellow gold prongs.

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules - just the preference of the wearer. Since you prefer yellow gold jewelry, I would talk to whoever was making the ring about incorporating a touch of yellow gold into the ring so that it had more of a two toned look. I would always want the prongs done in the platinum for the center stone. I'm not crazy about pave set in yellow gold but maybe some scroll work or a milgrained edge in yellow gold would help marry the two colors together.

BTW, I have a two toned Rolex watch that I love with my yellow gold rings. The shanks are in yellow gold but the diamond prongs and settings are done in platinum. I love the mix of the two metals with white diamonds!

I also wear a two-toned watch and frequently enjoy wearing white and yellow metals together.

ann mackay does some different and lovely work with yellow gold, she came to mind when i read your post.

also singlestone offers high quality pieces, and i've seen them do pieces similar to what you already wear as well as more intricate designs. look through all their pages, as there are some neat yellow gold designs towards the end, too.

oh, here is a very organic one made by singlestone for jewels by erica grace (JbEG). i swear i've seen one like this from singlestone that was polished and without the organic look, too.

all that said, with the design you like by LM i think you'll mostly see bling which will de-emphasize the visual of mixed metals. and anyway, it's your wedding set, it can be its own entity apart from your other jewelry.

I do wear both white gold/plat and yellow gold at the same time. I have a braclet that is mixed white gold and yellow gold and
I also wear a watch that is two-tone white/gold. I feel that these two pieces help pull it all together. I never mix on the same
hand but if the style were consistent I might be ok with that too.

Small pic (leftmost column, bottom ring), but here is an EC from Graff that has what looks like a pink diamond pave rose gold band
