Hi all,

My fiance and I have been spending the last few weeks trying to put together a wonderful ER. While we've finally got the setting picked, we're still stuck on picking a great diamond for it. Could you provide an opinion on the quality of these 3 diamonds or suggest any better (it doesn't have to be from WF)?

Setting:

Diamonds:

S/N: We're in Australia and it's really not easy for us to mail things back and forth (insanely expensive), so there really isn't a way for us to get to really look at the diamonds before deciding to have it set beforehand.

Um. Ok. If you and your lady picked out the setting together that's great. I just want to let you know that the setting you guys picked, especially combined with that wedding band is going to overpower your diamond and make a stone that is a great size (6mm) look relatively small.

And since you are in Australia, I don't want you to be disappointed.
If you don't mind my saying so, this is much better setting set for your size of stone; http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/wedding-sets/legato-sleek-line-pave-diamond-wedding-set-1478.htm If you prefer 6 prongs instead of 4, I highly suggest you ask Whiteflash to customize this setting for you and change out the head for a 6 prong. That way you can have the six prong head, but on a shank width and style that is more proportionate to your stone.

This is the stone I'd pick: http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3171984.htm

Why?
Clarity: All the stone are equally clean.
Color: The E is whiter, but you really aren't taking ANY real difference between an E and an F. Both are colorless. And certainly, there is not $700 difference between the .82 E and the .80 F in terms of color.
Carat. Weight is largely meaningless in this context. What matters is spread (dimensions). The two 80 range stones are 6.0. The 90 point stone is 6.1. Anything less than .2 is not a visible difference. So despite the ten point weight diffference there is no meaningful spread difference. So there's not point AT ALL in spending 1800 more for the .9 F VS2.
Cut. They are all excellent performers and pretty much equally from the idealscope and numbers. The 80 point stone has a really lovely small table at 53% and that's a lovely thing to have.

So basically, the great news is: the smallest stone is the best one of the ones you chose.

Thank you for the advice Gypsy.

What kind of diamond do you think I should be looking at if I don't want it to be overpowered by the setting? (I realize the ring is thick but the bottom bit of my ring finger is pretty fleshy and I tend to not look very good with the more dainty rings.)

Gypsy has given you good advice about the setting / stone relationship/ratio.

If you decide to go for a larger stone, I wanted to give you a few options.

If you can up your budget just a bit, check out these options:
1.058ct, G, SI2 (eye-clean)

1.015ct, H, VS1

And if you can up it a BIT more, check out this one:
1.207ct, H, SI1 (eye-clean)

I would think a 7mm stone (1.3-1.4 carat about) would be better.

I have very fleshy fingers too. And anything less than 2mm doesn't look good on me. But that setting is 2mm, it just has a taper toward the diamond (which makes the diamond look larger). And you will be wearing it next to a band that is also 2mm.

Is there any way you can go look locally and see if you can find a nice 2mm pave style band (Tiffany has several, if you can go there to look, that would be great) and see how you like it?

A Legacy wedding band will be 2mm think I believe.

Also try on the Novo. And a standard 6 prong solitiare with a one carat round.
