Need a jewler to set my Demantoid Garnet

I am beyond frustrated at this point.

I''ve contacted several jewelers who have otherwise have good reputations on this forum, only to be ignored or made to feel that if I''m not spending $10,000 on my engagement jewelery I''m not worth responding to or am treated with contempt.

Can someone please point me to a jeweler who will actually return my emails and treat me with common decency? I''m looking to spend about $4000 for my set although this is negotiable.

Who have you contacted and what are you looking for? It may be that what you want isn''t possible within your budget? We don''t have a lot to go on without knowing what you want and who you''ve talked to already...

Oh dear..

I''m sorry to hear this. Can you describe what you''re interested in creating? Do you have inspiration pictures?

Some jewelers specialize in pave, some in bezels, some work from scratch and others from stock pieces...it would be much easier to offer advice if we knew what you are interested in.

I''ve contacted Winifield''s and Judi from (http://www.jewelryexpert.com/) who I really wanted to have make my wedding band, as well as Andrew Sarosi who is local.

I also contacted an etsy jeweler who has a good reputation among friends, who never bothered to get back to me.

I understand that folks are busy but 7-14 days for a response (if at all) is too much.

I''m looking to have a low profile, four prong setting, in a single 2mm tang, platinum band, with half point pave half way down the sides. The centre stone is a 6.2mm round Madagascar Demantoid Garnet.

I don''t care if it''s custom or stock as long as the end result is what I want.

After the lack of customer service I''ve had from Judi, I''m thinking I''ll just buy a 2mm pave band to match the e-ring, instead of

this

with tsavorite centre stones. My budget is $4000, but it''s not fixed. I''m willing to spend a bit more if need be.

I''m surprised that you''re having so much trouble, since what you describe is easily doable for less than your budget, (unless I''m not understanding what you want), and everyone that I know has been pretty slow lately. Anyway, I just thought that I''d post a picture of that band you''ve linked to, since I like it so much. That engraving has such fine detail...just really nice. It''s a bit thick at 2.5mm, I''m wondering if a band this thick would be comfortable, though I''m sure that having that much space on the sides really is needed to get those scrolls in there that well.

That particular band was quoted at $3800 with Demantoid centre stones (which is not what I asked for) which I was perfectly willing to pay for, even if that meant forgoing an engagement ring for now. I''ve been in love with that band for years.

I agree that the band is a bit thick and that is something I was going to work out in the design had she chosen to return my last email. I also don''t think the inner milligrain is going to be necessary or comfortable.

I''m looking around for another jeweler who does similar work and is willing for work with me. I''ve been told that this design is created by a laser and that not may people have one.

TG:
I am unfamiliar with jewelryexpert.
You are not alone in your experience with Winfields. Personally their bench is not high on my personal list of PS custom vendors.
Not sure who the etsy seller is, so cannot comment there. It may be that they are behind on their convo''s, rather than that they are ignoring you.

I can understand your frustration.

What you''ve described seems do-able within your budget to me - how about contacting
BGD?
I was also personally very impressed with the work Gemshoppe did on Amethyste''s pear re-set, I would contact them for custom happily.

BGD have done some very nice engraved e-rings. Sorry I cannot link you as search function down.

WF’s response has been great for all my projects. I had communication issues with BGD initially, but even that was taken care of quickly, and I got my quote in a few days.

I know Andrew Sarosi doesn''t have much, if any, of a web presence and I''ve only ever dealt with them by phone so maybe an initial phone call with email follow up might work better with them. The projects I''ve done just over email were with BGD, Michael E. and Peter Lees and all their communications were great.

I don''t know why....maybe someone can tell me, but why do many jewelers act like they are god, and have a "I''m better then you" complex? I swear I have the same problem you are having whenever I want something set. It''s frustrating and a total turn off to that store.

I wish I could help you but like I said, having the same problem.

heck $4K dang if i knew how to do it I would be contacting you instead of you trying to get ahold ..keep on hunting..the one you find that does you right..just stick with them from then on out..they will make more money from your repeat business over time even..all for being responsive and helpful which is what you want right now, ya know..pays to be nice and ..well..at least respond to an email...

What a silly question RockHugger. If you look closely at the attached picture you will see what most of us see when we look in the mirror. I''ll bet that clarifies things now, doesn''t it ?

Ahhh, now here''s the reality of being a bench jeweler. Notice the big hammer and the hot metal ? This is much closer and explains why we need our fantasies.

Winfields? Is that Wink? If so, I am surpised at that.

Hmmm, I''ve never heard of any engraver that uses a laser to get that quality of engraving...strange.

Most engravers will give the surface to be engraved a bit of roughness and then coat it with a thin white paint. They then and mark off the general outline with a pointed divider and fill in the pattern to be engraved with a very sharp, soft pencil, using that as the guide for the main scroll or leaf pattern. All of the smaller details, like shading and background removal are done as needed. If you want to see some great engraving check out http://www.engravingforum.com/ Mostly guns and knives, but a few jewelry pieces.

Maybe your email went to their spam or got spat out in cyberspace. Did you try calling them?

Michael I imagined you wearing a much much bigger crown :)

*giggling at Michael''s photos*

Tsavoritegirl - how frustrating for you. Sorry to hear about this.

Have you tried Sally (an Etsy seller) from Heartofwater? I''m uber picky and she''s created two custom pieces for me and I can''t fault her work or communication. She is very very reasonably priced too.

I know others have used Julia from JKT but personally I find her expensive but I know she''s highly regarded by some on this forum.

If you don''t get any joy with Sally or Julia, there was a thread running on one of the other sections of this forum that discussed a whole load of Etsy sellers - if you find that thread and work through there are plenty of examples and maybe sending a few emails to them might find somebody you want to work with?

I have to say, I know Wink''s e-mail system is not the most reliable.

Sometimes vendors get behind on their emails/messages. I wouldn''t take it personally and I would just try again, or make a phone call. I second some of the vendors that have been recommended on this thread including BGD and HOW.

I''m now imagining Michael making jewelry in a kilt.

You know that I would if I could LD. The problem is that my head is so BIG that I'm having trouble finding a crown of the correct proportions.

Ha ! I'm sure that no one around here would even consider imagining such a thing. Ever seen a sasquatch in a kilt ?

How about going local?

TsavoriteGirl,

You are probably looking at a commercially made ring and the jewelers you are querying may not have access to that particular design. It looks a lot like it was cast from an engraved model. I'm with Michael, never heard of lasered engraving, but it is a clear indication that someone is not quite sure what he/she is talking about.

Best,

I really, really heart Michael E. right now.

Maybe try Green Lake? They seem to specialize in engraved rings and every PS thread I''ve seen on them has been favorable.

I was just going to suggest Greenlake. I don''t own anything of theirs, but it sure looks like they are capable of that quality of engraving or better.

Greenlake setting Item No. 56087 reminds me of the band and could accommodate your garnet. I am really having a time looking through greenlake's settings. The catalog is endless! I'm getting very inspired.
