This is a follow up to my post below.

I bought the ring- it was too nice to pass up. Its a round center stone with baguettes on the side. However the ring is a size 6.5 or 7 and I need it sized to a 3.5 or maybe 4. I dont mind having the jeweler reset the baguettes- I''m fine with whatever he has to do to make the ring the right size. I bought the ring from a wholesaler so I can''t have it sized there.

Any recommendations on who''d do this for me? I''ll eventually need to buy a wedding band there- one that''ll match the e-ring. I''m in North Jersey, not far from NYC. I work across the state, not far from Trenton (and about 40 mins from Philly).

Also, should I have the ring appraised before or after I (try to) have this work done? The ring came with GIA and IGA certificates.

Thanks!

Roman Jewelers in flemingtion NJ and Brigdewater.

Thanks for the replies! I''ll drop by Roman Jewelers after work- Bridgewater isnt that far.

Steve- 1. Is that pic from Fooly Cooly?
2. About how much of a premium would I have to pay? The side stones aren''t channel set. I guess they''re bar set- the stones are bookended by what look like bars. The center stone is up a bit, and the side stones are angled up towards it. Would it be cheaper to just have all the stones removed and buy a new ring?

Thanks again

I understand the desire to get a great price on something.. But there are a lot of things that are simply easier, and in the long run cheaper, to do right from the beginning than to try to modify something that was never designed to be used the way a customer may use it.. Buying hugely oversided rings to save a few dollars, and then spending as much, or more, later to modify it to fit can lead to long term issues such as a poorly set, or loose stone, poor craftsmanship, warped or out of round shanks, or even D shaped rings to get to a small enough size..

I agree with everything you said on your soapbox. I''d give someone similar advice for buying a car or computer or something. But...well I guess I had a moment akin to getting whacked in the head with a guitar and then just bought the thing.

I''d like to find a good jeweler who would be honest in his abilities to resize the ring. If I bring it somewhere and they really don''t think they could work on it, I dont mind having all the stones removed and reset on another ring. I think the ring itself (white gold) isn''t that expensive.

Also: FLCL- good show, unfortunately kind of short run.

Thanks

Just a word of caution (so you don''t become discouraged)...

Because you have bar-set baguettes and need SUCH a downsize, you may go to a jeweler who will not be willing to make such a downsize. I had to go to several jewelers before I found one who would take on the task and I was only going down 1/2 size!! But there''s something about those bar-set baguettes I guess that make it difficult to size...maybe an expert here can give us more insight on that.

It may be that just redoing the gold altogether to the right size and then setting the baguettes may be another option, but that''ll cot extra money...

You can do it...just didn''t want you to become discouraged if the first jeweler turns down your proposition...

Dave...

Thanks for that great analogy!! When they resized my rings, I remember them saying the diamonds could pop-out or break if they left the baguettes in. I understood the "popping out" but not the breaking...now I understand!!

They ended up resetting the whole rings (e- and w-rings) after they were resized...and that was only a 1/2 size!!

That is a great analogy. If a jeweler I go to suggests that the ring can be resized with no problems, I''ll take it elsewhere.

I don''t mind having the stones reset- I''ll just suggest that off the bat.

Looking on sites like diamonds.com I found similar settings (not sure about the quality of the side stones, though) for $550. If resetting and sizing cost less than that, then that''s what I''ll do. Otherwise, I''ll see if I can exchange my setting for one that can be or already is sized down.

All this talk of soda crackers and baguettes is not good for someone trying to reduce their carb intake.

Thanks all!
