Hello,

Thanks for viewing my topic! Yesterday I went to the mall to look at engagement rings with my soon to be fiance'' (I hope!). A ring she loved the most was a Helzberg Diamond Masterpiece Cut with 2 .14 sidestones. She normally likes the princess cut but this 4 prong setting made it look similar to princess cuts. I have to say their diamonds in their masterpiece collection are very good with the "hearts and arrows" clearly showing.

3/8 Carat
Depth: 60.3
Table: 57
Polish and Symmetry: EX, EX
VS2, H color
4.73 by 4.75
$2700
Set in 18k white gold with two .14 sidestones of similar cut quality. The setting is similar to the "trellis".

This is their best "cut" ring and of course cut is the most important to me as well because I want maximum fire and brilliance. Can I get a better cut? The table and depth seem to be the "ideal" correct?

My question is can I find something similar though an online retailer for cheaper? I''m prepared to happily pay this much but doesn''t hurt to ask. I''m thankful she prefers "smaller" diamonds. I''m familiar with Bluenile but I can''t find a similar setting. How does quality of cut compare for Bluenile''s Signature or Whiteflash''s best cut? Thanks a lot!!!

Hi, welcome to PS. We need the crown and pavillion angles along with the thickness of the girdle and the dimensions of the stone to help on that stone.
3/8 of a carat is just under 0.4 carats. Did you want 0.4 or 0.5?
The price for that stone is quite high.

ETA: did the price include the whole ring too or just the 3 stones?

Only other info they have is dimensions: 4.73 by 4.75 by 2.86. Thin to Medium Girdle.

Yes, this is the price for the whole ring. Thanks for the reply and welcome. She liked the 3/8 or 39 pts but I'm sure a full half carat couldn't hurt.

Haha!
Can''t judge the cut without the other info (the cut is what actually makes it sparkle), so why don''t we try poking around a little. I looked on Helzberg''s site...
is this the pic of the setting? (just guessing b/c it looks like the only one with sidestones)

Yes! You are so helpful--that is the style of setting she likes (without the tiny accent diamonds). You are right with the price. What do you think of getting a Hearts and Arrows from Whiteflash? Is the H&A overpriced? I love that you can actually see the photos on that site....and I''ve yet to explore if they have a comparable setting, which is big!

Yes, I think that setting can be easily done. So just confirming - she wants a 3 stone ring basically, correct? Just the center and two round sidestones? No additional channel set stones along the sides, correct?
I will help you look for stones in a little bit - I have to go right now.

I''ve seen the Helzberg masterpiece cuts and I will say they are beautiful but they are HIGHLY overpriced. You can get just as good of a cut, or BETTER, from an online vendor for less. Try whiteflash.com or goodoldgold.com. They may also have a similar setting too.

Thank you very much Kelli and :). The only problem is I can''t find very small diamonds (14-16 points or so to be the small accent stones.) I like the setting and found a great stone on whiteflash. You guys are so right, overpriced diamonds are reality of B&M stores.

This would work if the 2 side stones were not quite as large but I might go with it anyway...do you guys think a .5 with 2 .25''s will look ok?

I think that equals a total of a carat, which is nice! I would personally LOVE that, BUT, whiteflash has plenty of smaller stones, they cut their own. They just might not be listed on their website like the bigger ones are. If you contacted them to let them know what you want, I''m sure they''d be willing to make it for you. They are going to replace the stones in my wedding band, which are really really tiny, smaller than the ones you wanted. They cut their ACA stones even in really timy sizes!

That said, I do really like that one you posted anyway.

Thank you Kelli, you''re very helpful.

No problem

I have a three stone ring with a .51 center and .27 on each side.
Here it is with a 2 mm band and I wear a size 5.5

Gorgeous ring, thanks Diamond Dana. I talked to Chris with WF today and he is helping me get 2 15 points on each side with my .4 carat center. It is almost identical to the ring she liked and will hopefully be more brilliant, and still fall under my $3000 budget.

Icarus - can you post a budget you would like to stick with? There is potential to go a little larger (if you want) if you wanted to do the full 2700. Diamond Dana's ring is gorgeous. Ditto to Kelli that you can contact WF to get a quote for the ring with smaller sidestones if you are wanting to put most of your $ into the center stone, then we will know how much $ you have left over for the center stone.

You may also want to look at Wink - http://winkjones.com/specials/diamonds.php (the RB means round brilliant)
He has some stones that are potential contenders - you could contact him to ask about eyecleanliness/prongability of some of his I1 stones. There have been quite a few people who have posted good fortune with the I1 stones he has had a knack for finding. He could easily source some smaller side stones for you also.

This 3 stone ring he has looks a lot like the Helzberg one..
(comes in white gold too -the pic is the yellow gold version) - 14K WG $450, 18k $625 setting only

Good Old Gold - this one looks great
http://goodoldgold.com/diamond/4641/ $1416

or if you want to go up to at 0.57 carat for $1439

I''m excited to see what you end up with. Keep us posted!

Gorgeous ring Diamond Dana!

That .57 is gorgeous, :). It''s very tempting when you see how perfect the H&A''s are.

I will post the ring I''m getting after I actually buy it, which will be today! Wish me luck, I have to finace this thing in like 4 split paypals so I''m hoping for no hiccups.

I''m so lucky because she honestly doesn''t like larger diamonds! Like I think she would be happier with a half carat but right now I''m leaning toward a .41-.43 just because we are on a tight budget and I know I can upgrade later with WF, which is great.

Thanks for everyone''s help, I''ll post engagement photos here for those that stick around!
