Ha! I hope I am not being too nosey. But your marriage license is from SF City hall right?

Okay I am just pulling this from my memory (which isn''t so great) but I thought you had mentioned that in one of my threads...

Anyway if so, did you just send a copy of your marriage license to Social Security? Because on the SS website it says you have to have your new name on the marriage certificate and mine just says "party one- my firstname, maiden name" and then "party two" with his info. No mention of a name change, and they never asked me either...

So anyway I could just send it out and see what happens, but really I am at a point where I am seriously considering keeping my name and just using his socially!

Where does it say that? That''s weird!

I have the SS form filled out. They ask for your new name on there and then they want to see a copy of the certificate to show proof of marriage. I''m taking mine in to a local SS office once I get my copies in the mail.

It''s on the application directions:
"A name change document (e.g., marriage document) must identify you by both your old and new names."
Maybe I am being just to anal about this. I''ll probably have to go to the office anyway...

I filled out my form through one of those services that helps you fill out all of the forms at once.

I read through the forms and I see that note on there as well. As far as I know though I was instructed to just take the form into SS and show them the marriage certificate. I called the county clerk the other day to ask them how many copies of the certificate I needed to order since I was changing my name. The clerk told me to just take the certificate in and show them.

The form instructions does make it seem like you have to have changed it already somehow but I don''t see how that''s possible.

yeah I know it is weird.... everywhere I''ve looked SS is the first place you change it and it becomes legal, but they act like you should have changed it somewhere else first. I''m sure its fine though...

Ok I just found an article they included with my name change service.

It says:

Make sure to Mail/Bring:

l Your Social Security form
l Your current Social Security card (if you have it)
l Your Driver''s License or Passport with your maiden name
l Your Certified marriage certificate
l $0.00, there is no fee associated with changing your name on your Social Security card

This is just going by memory as it''s nearly 4 am and i''m too lazy to look at ours from CA. But mine was first name, maiden name. His was first name. And then for his last name is was under family name. I think. . . . . i could be totally off. I just bought my license, old SS card and marriage certificate down to the SS office and got it switched that very day.

Cheers!

I just changed my name on Friday in California. The SS office will allow you to change your name to any combination of your maiden name and husband's name when using your marriage certificate as your name change document. If you want to create a new last name or change your name to something totally different, you need to go to a judge to get a court order, which would show the new name. I think that's the reason for the confusing wording on the SS website and forms.

In a nutshell, it doesn't matter that your marriage certificate shows only your maiden name. The list posted above of documents you need to bring or mail to SS is correct.

I went to my social security office and they changed my last name and my middle name (to my maiden name) without any other documentation besides my marriage license and maybe my drivers license to prove identity. I was nervous because it didn''t have my new name on my marriage license either (RI marriage license)- plus in my state (MA) you''re technically supposed to go through the courts to change your middle name. But, social security didn''t ask for any court documents for my middle name change, and then the registry of motor vehicles just went by the change at social security and everyone else has gone by my new license. So to make a long story short, I think you''ll be fine.

I think this is a similar stupid mistake in wording on most state''s sites. They say your document needs to have your old and new name, but if it''s a marriage license, most won''t. It''s not a problem. As long as you take proof of ID and your license, you''ll be fine.

i brought my certified copy of the marriage license to social security office and they took care of the rest. well, i filled out the papers and brought the copy in to them, and that''s all they needed.
it really only takes 10 minutes or so if there aren''t a lot of people waiting at SS that day.

I did change my name, I don''t really remember how the form is filled out, I can take a look later. But I know it wasn''t a problem at all. I think on the SS form is where you just fill in whatever combo of current/his name you want your name to be.

sounds like I''m not going to have a problem. I''ll just go into the SS office and get it done already!

It shouldn''t be a problem at all. The most annoying part was waiting around and filling out all the darn forms to change it everywhere! We''ve been married a year and I still have a few things I forgot in my maiden name...

Ahhhhhhhh the SS office!!!!! We live in Winter Park, Florida (Orlando) and I went to the office to change my name on Friday. I had to wait two hours!! Oh well, at least that''s done. Now on to changing my driver''s license, insurance, bank, credit cards.......
And write 100 thank you notes......

I just signed up for MissNowMrs.com and they filled out all of the forms. Only the DMV one has to be done after the SS form has been filed. So I can''t get that one until it''s done.

It''s still a painful process!

I did that too actually, but I found it slightly annoying that certain parts weren''t all the way filled out, so I needed to go back and check everything. And inputting the bank info, CC info, etc. took almost as long as writing the letters myself!

I agree with you NeatFreak.....I signed up for MissNowMrs too and I think it is kind of a rip off. I was under the impression they''d be sending forms in for me and things, but really you just type your info in and it puts the info in the forms. Not worth 30 bucks to me!!
