you or your SO would never have known you'd liked if it weren't for the other person!

I think food is the most common thing for us. He was a little narrow minded on eating steak, pork and anything but chicken. But I showed him how theres so many different ways it can be cooked and have different flavors so now he loves his spareribs and sometimes will eat steak. Overall he has opened up to trying more food so it helps a lot when deciding where to eat or what to cook.

He was also so so adament about never wearing flip flops. We took a trip to Miami earlier this year and he only brought sneakers with him! I was like you know we are going to be on the beach a lot and you are not going to want to keep taking off your sneakers. So finally he purchased a pair in the store and now he slips them on all the time. I bite my tongue to not say "told ya sooo!"

He introduced me to many different restaurants near our surround towns that I've never been to and now can't image going without him. A big thing too is how he lead me into watching different genres of movies and reading more sci-fi. Also I watch many of the t.v. shows he is interested in such as Myth Busters, Seinfeld (his all time favorite ever), and How Its Made etc. Never before would I have turned on those shows or if I did I wouldn't have an appreciation for them. Its so interesting to notice the things you would miss out on without the other persons influences.

I've introduced my SO to Indian/Pakistani food, and bollywood movies =) (I was born in Pakistan, migrated to the States when I was 6mo though)

I've also introduced him to eating steak medium-rare because he used to get it well done... which being a Texan I think is a crime that should be punishable by law!

Lastly, I've introduced him to decent clothes *snickers* I'm a fashion bug and he... well ... he was not. Now I've got him picking out shirts that have collars and don't have anime/punchlines scrawled all over them. I remember the day he asked me, "What is wash?" in reference to jeans! tee hee

He has introduced me to anime and Japanese food (he's white, but just a nerd lol). He's also introduced me to few video games that I now absolutely love.

Lastly, and I think most importantly, he has introduced me to being spontaneous. I've always been a bit of a planner and had to have a 'schedule of events' before doing anything and it is always 'penciled in' my organizer. He shook me up with his random trips and dates and exciting events. I've learned to loosen up from him, and I love him for that!

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head!

Definitely MUSIC! I was a big classic rock fan with a little bit of top-100 hits thrown in the mix. He liked classic rock but was a total indie rock snob... He made me mix CDs all the time and I started to fall in love with indie rock, too

After meeting me, he became animal obsessed. He never grew up with pets, but is not pet-dad to two cats and a dog  I've always been animal-crazed and grew up with birds, cats, and doggies. I'm trying to convince him to expand our brood and add one more pooch to the mix

My husband would never have experienced the music of John Prine. He is a who is hard to catagorize. Very much like Bob Dylan with a better voice. He writes with the same kind of imagery as Dylan but has a much better voice. He's written "Hello in There", Sam Stone, Flag Decal and many others. He tours the country a lot and we generally see him 2-3 times a year.

The ironic thing it, I woukd never have heard of him if it were for my EX HUSBAND. I discovered John back in 1970s and have been a die hard fan since then.

oh good topic!!! I introduced BF to a lot of southern food (breakfast tacos, banana pudding with Nilla wafers, coconut cream pie, real barbecue...) and he introduced me to some video games and interestingly enough sumo wrestling!

I agree, great topic. I'm so shocked no one has thought of this before!

Ummm SO tried sushi on my birthday like.. a month after we met. He had never eaten fish before because he thought it smelled funny. His mom never pushed it... he was totally not a mommy's boy.. nope not at all. He tolerates it now for me. Actually he gets the "Kentucky" roll usually; it's like friend chicken and spicy mayo.

SO taught me how to shot a gun it’s a long and sort of funny story. I was terrified, so I only let him put one bullet in at a time. I had to like... pep talk myself into picking up said gun. My first shot was right into the femoral artery on the target. : D I shot a total of 4 bullets, I made him finish the other 96... in less time than it took me to shot the 4.

I was terrified but looking back I enjoyed it a bunch and I felt a little empowered oh and a little less scared of guns. I made him take a gun completely apart and go through the “how this works,” and “how to clean this.” Etc.

I think the BEST thing that SO has introduced me to is the ability to let things roll off your shoulder from time to time. I'm still not very good at it, but I'm working on.

I have an opposite one.

My SO was convinced I don't like coconut. I said "what? I like coconut"

And now I realize...he's right. I don't like coconut.

LOL.

cross stitching - DH is great at it. Here's his latest...

for me - video games. I would've never bought a wii - ever

I just asked boy this, and he answered "definitely wine, and foie gras - I didn't even know I liked that until this past weekend!" I think he probably also eats a whole lot of vegetables he didn't know before he liked, as well as bleu cheese.

As for me, I definitely have a greater appreciation of visiting baseball stadiums (every city we visit we have to visit a ballpark if there is one) and I now watch certain TV shows because of him (House, 24, Lie to Me, etc). And podcasts (which I actually recommended he listed to since he drives a lot, but now I want to listed too).

Great stories everyone!

I laughed out loud literally about the coconut... soo funny :cheeky:

BTW that is a wonderful cross stitch!! I used to love them and I remember people used to do them for weddings, new borns and happy events! Wow I think I will go pick one up this weekend :) yay new/old hobby

My SO used to only wear Dickies (a type of khaki pant if you don't already know). He refused to wear jeans because he said they were uncomfortable and didn't look good on him. I kept urging him to give them a try because they really weren't uncomfortable and they look great. I mean really, what guy won't wear jeans? It was weird lol. Then one day he surprised me by coming over in a pair of jeans he bought just for me . Now he wears jeans most of the time. Odd story but definitely something I turned him on to.

He got me really into anime. I know it sounds nerdy and weird but there are some really great animes out there and I never would have watched them without him. Now I love anime and get to recommend some to him!

For me: Football! I actually find myself looking forward to football season and games now. Who knew, because I am not a sports person at all and can now hold a semi decent conversation come football season.

For him: Independent film. While he still loves his share of Rambo/Die Hard/painfully dumb and not even funny comedies, he's opened his mind to other films that I love. I have to smile with pride when he says "What's on Sundance tonight..."

Ethiopian food and Sichuan hot pot!

DH was pretty narrow minded about food in general when we met. There were a lot of things that he *thought* he didn't like, and a lot of ethnic foods that he was afraid to try. I think it stems from his parents, since his mom is extremely picky (she's become much more picky over the last couple of years). I just kept making whatever food I wanted, and dragging DH to restaurants, and now he'll try anything (and likes pretty much everything). Our tastes are so similar that we'll read a menu and immediately pick out the same top two entrees, and then fight over who gets to order the "best" one. He's still a bit resistant about trying new foods sometimes, but I always make him and he always ends up liking it.

Elrohwen-- that is just like me and my BF! Is that your bunny in your avatar? It is adorable... I have such a soft spot for black/white animals especially. Well I love all animals but still they're my favorite colored furry friends.

I love this story : ) He's good! I tried to get SO to crochet... It sort of became one giant knot.

For me: definitely beer. I never really used to like it and then SO got really into craft brews and import beers and now we are both total beer snobs. He's also got me going to football games which I enjoy, even though our team was 2-10 this season... wah wah.

For him: I asked him this and he said TV shows. He rarely watches TV but I've gotten him hooked on a few shows I like. Also probably dogs too. When I met him he was convinced he was a cat person, which I soon realized was only because his one cat that he loves acts a lot like a dog in many ways. Since meeting me he's been exposed to more dogs and realizes that he really likes them too which is good cause I want a couple of them :D

This is a great thread!

For me, he has gotten me into watching sports - I even read sports blogs now! Football and basketball only - I never could stand baseball, and he doesn't care for it either so that worked out nicely :)

For him, I turned him onto designer jeans - he used to buy jeans on sale from Banana Republic, which were fine, but had other, much more terrible/embarrassing jeans which he wore to my chagrin (I would actually try to hide them so he couldn't wear them haha). I wanted to buy him a pair of 7s for the longest time, but he refused to let me, and said spending $100+ on jeans was just ridiculous and swore up and down that jeans are just jeans and there's no difference. But the day I finally took the bull by the horns and bought him a pair of 7s, he was converted. He raved about how comfortable and soft they were - and asked me to buy more!! And now they are the only jeans he will wear, hahahhaa. VICTORY! I also managed to get him to stop wearing/buying pleated pants....those were the worst :nono:

For me, eating broccoli and spinach dip. I love broccoli now, but will only eat cooked spinach in a dip....spinach/artichoke is my favorite.

For DH, cats....he had never had a cat, before we adopted Coco, and was convinced that he was allergic to them. Nope, no allergies and he's totally smitten with her.

You sound like me! I never would have watched those shows on my own but SO loves them! Now they are some of my favorite shows!

SO also opened me up to tons of new food. I used to be extremely picky with food. I hated all condiments on anything. No ketchup, mustard, pickles, onions, tomatoes, dressings, peppers, lettuce, nothing. I hated all spicy food, buffalo wings, steak, pork...basically anything besides grilled chicken and a baked potato with butter. SO all but forced me to try new foods and guess what? I ended up liking them! All those food mentioned above I now love. I'm so glad SO made me try them because they really are good!

I think we keep a memory of food in our head that we dont like so then we never try it again. Or our taste buds change over time and then we try something we once didnt like and start to like it... hmm idk.

One thing I really dislike is raw onions or onion anything. Everytime we'd go to eat BF would get French onion soup for starters and I tried it one time. YUM... I really like it now and wherever we go we get it and grade which restaurant has the best! lol its fun

I introduced my husband to astronomy and he introduced me to technology and camping. Of course the camping and astronomy make a great combination. :appl:
