I''ve been sitting on my hands hoping not to post about this until I actually have my new engagement ring, but I can''t stand it any longer!!

You may recall I got engaged in early August. My fiance gave me the gorgeous Cartier Declaration d''Amour solitaire with side baguettes - it''s a 1.11 D VS1, platinum, and I really adored it when I tried it on in June. (You can find pics in SMTR under "Declaration d''Amour" I think - I don''t know how to link, but it would have been from early August)

I had been wearing it for about 6 weeks when I noticed that the diamond felt a bit loose - I could sort of move it up and down in the setting. While I think the setting is gorgeous - modern and unique - it does leave the diamond rather vulnerable at the sides. Also, one of the 4 prongs didn''t seem to be properly holding the diamond in place.

I felt so heartbroken when I discovered the diamond was loose! Here we paid a premium for Cartier, and look what had happened after only 6 weeks of wear! Needless to say, my fiance and I went into Cartier on that Monday morning (discoverning the looseness on Saturday evening). We were there for 2 hours - the sales associate who sold us the ring acted very embarassed, wanted to help us, offered to have Cartier craft a new setting for the diamond. I told her that I had simply lost faith in that particular setting (which I had - I was so upset!) because it left the diamond so vulnerable. And while I wish I were a lady of leisure, unfortunately I do have to work and use my hands for typing etc! I demonstrated how the diamond was loose. She looked at the file and suspected that the problem came when they re-sized the ring to fit my fingers.

She then spoke with the store manager, who agreed to do an exchange for value! I could have my pick of whatever was in the range that we originally paid. I''m ashamed to say that I immediately perked up at the prospect of a NEW diamond! I guess because I had only had this one for 6 weeks when it happened, I hadn''t yet grown attached.

Can you believe it? I looked at the various settings and decided on the 1895 pave (the classic platinum setting with pave diamonds). The problem is that because of the delicate pave work, they did not want to have to re-size it much to fit my finger. That left considerably less in stock, obviously (I wear approx 7.5 US). We left them to search their databases and they called that Friday with 6 options - none of which were a perfect fit.

We went in that Saturday and narrowed it down to 2 selections. There was a 1.19 G VS1 in the 1895 pave setting. However, that diamond was not facing up as large as my 1.11 - and it was considerably less than what we spent on my current ring because mine is a D (meaning approx $6,000 refund). But, I ABSOLUTELY fell in love with the stone that was sitting in a plain 1895 setting - it was G, VVS2, 1.26 carats

That diamond was throwing off these gorgeous, warm chunks of color. It was a totally different look to my current diamond (a D) but I really loved it.

I tried to convince myself to like the plain 1895 setting but I just really loved the pave. So ... the manager agreed that they would custom make an 1895 pave setting for that diamond!

It''s been 2 weeks and I''m told the ring will be ready for the end of the month. I am so excited, I can''t believe it. I went from being totally heartbroken to being totally surprised by a completely new diamond in a completely new setting! I just had to share my excitement with you - I could definitely see a size increase between my 1.11 and the 1.26, and I really liked the colors the G was throwing off. So, it''s all worked out!

YAY! I want to see photos as soon as humanly possible!

I can''t wait to see pics! I know I''d be much happier with a 1.26 G than a 1.11 D, to each their own, but size plays a huge role in diamonds to me.

I''m hard pressed to say a G gives off any "warmth", but I guess compared to a D maybe it does? Either way, I''m a huge fan of your decision! Sounds great!

congrats on the fast upgrade, can''t wait to see pics of the new ring..

YAY! My D is very "crisp" - I guess that''s the best way to describe it; the G just looks melty gorgeous. The D throws off colors but not as much as the G. I''m sure that could be attributed to cut just as easy as color, but I''d say the G has way more scintillation. Very scientific, I know! The G definitely faced up white, and only in comparing the side right next to the D could I notice any tint at all (and even that was very very faint).

Oh wow how exciting! You are a very lucky girl, I would love to have my pick of Cartier engagment ring. The 1895 pave and plain are among my very favourites settings.

I can't wait till you get it and take some pics! lots of pics LOL!

Which did you prefer as a setting? the plain or the pave? While I luuurve more diamonds and sparkle there is something about the plain band with the plain wedding band that looks so classy and classic and awesome all at the same time LOL!.

What will you do for a wedding band? plain or pave? sigh... I love Cartier

Edited to add: Duh! I just re-read your post and saw what you said about which setting you prefer. I was just too excited to read carefully!

Congratulations! It''s going to be just beautiful!

For reference, presenting the 1895 pave solitare:

Sorry that your first ring did not work out, but yay for new bling! Remember to post the handshots when you get it!

That will be a gorgeous ring! I would also prefer a larger G over a smaller D.

What a wonderful story....I loved every word!!!! I had to laugh over your not attaching because it had `only` been 6 weeks!!!! Somehow I think the new one will be attached in 6 seconds!!!!

2 Cartiers in less than 3 months? You aren''t playing fair. Is this DO OVER thing a pattern in your life...or it this the first? If you tell me you get upgraded all the time...I am going to blow my top!!

Can''t wait for you to get your new love. Now you are going to have to reintroduce your engagement ring to all those people who have seen the first. I wouldn''t want to be you. He he he he he...that last line, I was just kidding.

LOL - no, I am almost never upgraded!! One time I was upgraded to business class on British Airways, but that was just a fluke because there were loads of open seats on a Saturday morning. Otherwise, I get nothin''!

I live overseas from my family, so they never even saw my first ring!! They''ve seen lots of photos though ... I''ll be going home for Thanksgiving and it will be so fun showing my new ring to everyone!!

Hi Angeline!

I do love the lines of the classic 1895 solitaire - just not on my fingers! It is such a delicate setting, but I don''t think it looks so great on my chubby fingers. I really like having some diamonds on the shank - tricks the eye a bit
