Hi All,

I am a complete newbie, and I just wanted to ask your advice and see if this is normal.

I have a whilte gold square shank ring with a 2 ct stone on it. It was a size 7 and needed to be resized to a 5. I decided to bring it to Bailey Binks and Biddle since they seemed so reputable. The jeweler came out from the back and said that he could resize it no problem. He said, he could cut the ring on the two sides and rejoin them, that way the ring would still keep it''s original shape.

One hour later, I came back and they brought my ring out to me. The ring (setting) was fine, but the stone was chipped and it was rattling around in its setting!

No one even mentioned it to me. I almost didn''t notice it because I was so busy lookng at the shank, which did look very nice. I was about to pay and leave when I put the ring on my finger and looked at my stone and almost had a heart attack! I was so shocked, I thought I was seeing things! I told the woman at the desk and at first she said the stone feels like it was tight to her and she didn''t see a chip. When she finally saw the chip with her loupe (which was so big you didn''t need a loupe to see it) she wanted to take the ring into the back and ask the jeweler whether he had taken the stone out from its setting before he had resized the ring. Eventually, the store agreed that it was their responsibility and agreed to replace the stone with a similar stone and that I could pick up my ring next week.

But I just thought it was strange that no one even noticed or mentioned that the stone was loose and chipped. Could it be possible that they didn''t check the stone at all after the ring was resized? I am so glad I looked more closely at the stone before leaving the store. Now I feel very scared/anxious to have that jeweler set the new stone. Was this a one time mistake, or was it just bad worksmanship and I should worry about having him set my new stone???

I''m so horrified and confused!

I often do QC, quality control, inspection work on repair jobs that my partner's shop does for major chain stores. I catch mistakes, damage, loose stones, failure to rhodium plate, cracks showing, stiff chains, etc, etc, etc all the time. Professional jewelers who are doing this work just don't always do their best and someone with a lot of experience needs to ride herd on them. It isn't easy to constantly confront supposedly "skilled" jewelers, but there is no way these jobs can leave the shop without a strict review. The client's would revolt if the QC was not being done.

It is difficult to understand how sizing a ring 2 sizes smaller could result in diamond breakage, but "stuff" happens. I sure hope they do a better job getting you a proper replacement. Be patient. It could take a few days to find the right stone. A little extra time now may prevent you from needing a very costly attorney. Once you get embroiled in litigation, it is doubtful you'll ever get fully compensated. Likely as not, they will give you some viable alternatives in a reasonable time frame.

Best of luck!

Wow, that is just awful. I am so glad you noticed it while you were still in the store. When I had my emerald ring sized I told them not to size it, if they would hurt the stone. I go pick up my ring and the emerald was absolutely trashed. It was cloudy and looked awful I think there was a new fracture in it too. I finally found a place that oiled emeralds and it looked better after that but it''s never looked the same again. I hope they get your ring fixed up as good as new soon.

That is a shame, but thankfully you noticed it before you walked out of their store! I hope they fix this for you very soon.

Sorry to hear about this lana

Please update us on your progress with this company. Hopefully, you''ll come out equally as good, if not better! Best of luck.

would it make sense to have the loose stone verified before they put it in your setting? I am so sorry this happened to you...
